  • Ann-Margret here in January 1961 performing the second part of her screen test which was the personality test where they transformed her look with a rust coloured sweater & black tights which became her trademark look in the early sixties in which here she sings the classic number "Mack the Knife".

      She is talented, beautiful, and sexy...
      How many artists nowadays would pass such a test? When actors had to know how to act, sing, and dance... Nowadays, it's enough to defend "causes" (ideological).

    @andrewdow1609 Год назад +253

    She was just 19 when she recorded this, and WOW. They knew they had something special.
    For those wondering, the personality test was meant to show as many different personality traits (sex appeal, happy, sad, attitude, etc etc) as possible that an actor/singer could portray. That is why you see exaggerated facial expressions.

      Yup. Directors always know they can get an actor to turn it down, but they need to see how much they can turn it up, so the screen test is always over the top.

    She is performing a style of music that most modern audiences are not familiar with. These songs are often originally by black artists-she is performing in the style of a jazz singer, a nightclub chanteuse. If you watch media from the late 50s and early 60s, it was a different type of singing and dance that was considered “sexy”. Rather than the modern twerking, arched backs and running hands up and down the body…it was tucked stomachs and tushes, a lifted hand, jazz/modern dance style dancing, a vivacious look to the face. Not sure exactly about this song but I’ve seen her “Bill Bailey” test and that’s an Ella Fitzgerald song, which she executed perfectly *in the style of the song*

    • @absolutenobody4137
      @absolutenobody4137 Год назад +3

      "Won't You Come Home, Bill Bailey" is not an Ella song...she is just one of the many talented women who covered it. Pearl Bailey also covered the song. It was actually written by a man, Hughie Cannon. First published in 1902, it was a Dixieland Jazz Standard. It was originally largely performed by white entertainers, Genaro and Baily, a popular American Vaudeville Duo, by both Arthur Collins on Columbia and Silas Leachman on Victoria. It wasn't until much later that we heard the beautiful styling of Della Reese, who put it on her album "Special Delivery" and Ella who often performed it live, in the 60's...among many other talented females. "Mack the Knife" was written for a musical drama and became a standard after Louie Armstrong covered it.

      @@absolutenobody4137 yes, not many wrote the songs they sung back then. If your version was the most famous one, it was “your” song. Like Elvis and Hound Dog even though it was a Big Mama Thornton song first (and better imho)

      What about the Who's Tommy? Have you seen her in that? Amazing, good movie too. But not as good once I learnt about Peado Townshend and him being a main writer for the rock drama, and then seeing uncle Ernie, who Keith Moon plays in Tommy. It taints what I used to once really enjoy.
      It's still a classic tho, and definitely well worth a watch, the soundtrack especially.
