  • In my last video I talked about making chainmail juggling balls/hacky sacks, and the time has come to show you how it's done. This time I didn't wear my wrists out working on a micro maille project.
    I've said it before, and I'll say it again; I've been weaving chainmail on and off for over a decade now and I love it. I started working with it as a teen as a way to pass the time at a very boring job, and I've never looked back. In a way, chainmail was my original fidget toy, with the added bonus of being able to sell the things I make.
    Now I'm off to tweak some paint mixes for another tabletop gaming related DIY. I apologize in advance to all of my fellow compulsive dice collectors.
    --------------------
    Welcome to DIY with Cly. In this series I'll be making pretty much anything the catches my fancy, though I may be open to suggestions in the near future.

      Good luck! I'm glad my tutorials are proving useful. 😁
      I really need to make some more maille videos soon. I have everything needed for several more projects, I just need to get my butt in gear. 😅

      +Ethin Rightnowar Glad you're enjoying them. 😀 I am too, especially since it's pretty easy for me to come up with my next project. 😝

    woah, that looks like it would have an amazing texture to hold and squish and like... fiddle with the links... i want one *-*

      +dragonflyzART It really does, and it makes such a satisfying sound when juggling. 😁

    nice guide,followed it step by step and made me self one of these makes a nice afternoon project

    • @ClyFaker
      @ClyFaker  6 лет назад +1

      I'm glad you enjoyed it. 😁
      Another good afternoon project would be to make two more and then learn how to juggle. Okay, so it takes a bit longer than an afternoon to learn to juggle, but it's still a lot of fun. 😝

    • @BurntwolfAirsoft
      @BurntwolfAirsoft 6 лет назад +1

      hahaha i think ill pass on the learning to juggle,but these are great stress balls!now to find a evening project to use up the 2000+ rings iv got left after making a hauberk!
      great channel btw keep up the good work

      If you need another project there's always a dice bag:

      I really need to make more maille tutorials. Then again, I also need to get back to a consistent upload schedule. 😅

      true may give it ago,and you really do easy to follow and well explained,unlike the two messes iv just made of "candy cane cord" but its one of them,i need to make more videos myself but life catches up with ya

    • @ClyFaker
      @ClyFaker  6 лет назад +1

      Feel free to skip the first half of the dice bag video, since that is all about making your own links.
      I'm glad my tutorials are easy to follow. I try to make them beginner friendly, but we'll see if that carries over to the dragonscale weave I've been thinking about recording. Most of the tutorials out there are convoluted, but I figured out an easier way to go about it. The downside is that I forgot the easier method... For now at least. 😛

    Great tutorial! Have you tried using more felt inside to get a firmer ball? I’m going to attempt this but intend for the balls to be more firm.

    • @ClyFaker
      @ClyFaker  5 лет назад

      I haven't tried that, but feel free to experiment. You could also try shoving in a cheap hacky sack from the dollar store, though you might want one that's plain instead of printed.

    • @Oak321
      @Oak321 5 лет назад

      Nice idea, thanks. I also wonder how gold colored foil would look stuffed inside... & apparently have the wrong size rings and am worried the balls will wind up the size of a baseball (14G 3/8” ID). Perhaps I can change the math formula and start with six instead of 8 on the first row. 🤔

    Could you make a double layered cast iron skillet scrubber out of chainmail?

    • @ClyFaker
      @ClyFaker  7 лет назад

      +Dylan Frye If I had stainless steel links it would be super simple. I wouldn't trust these galvanized links on cookware though.

    How does it feel when you play hackysack? Are you able to stall the ball on your foot easily?

    • @ClyFaker
      @ClyFaker  7 лет назад

      +C.S Lucas After a bit of breaking in they're great for hacky sack. I had no problem stalling with one back when I played in college.

      I take it that was you on Instagram. The bag looks great, especially with the high shine of the links. Were they bright aluminum?

      Yes It was me, i don't know what The links are made of, i bought a bunch of metal ring in a costume jewelry Shop

      +Capitan Pollo Interesting. I never would have thought to check a costume jewelry shop for links. I might just have to try that myself.

    Maybe I missed it but what ring sizes and guage did you use

    • @ClyFaker
      @ClyFaker  7 лет назад

      +Shea Kelley I can't remember if I mentioned it in the video, but these are the same rings from my dice bag video. They're 16 gauge with a 5/16 inch internal diameter.

      +Christopher Foutch This ended up using 280 links.

    • @fchristopher702
      @fchristopher702 7 лет назад +1

      Cly Faker thanks I really wanna make one since I seen one when I was in high school. it was smaller and didn't have a filler

    • @ClyFaker
      @ClyFaker  7 лет назад

      +Christopher Foutch No problem. 👍
      I've seen the no filler balls/cubes before, and while they look cool, I'm more of a fan of these. They have the perfect amount of give for my tastes.

    • @fchristopher702
      @fchristopher702 7 лет назад +1

      Cly Faker I like it with the filler. I am a hacky sack player lol. I can't juggle.

      +Christopher Foutch lol
      Juggling is pretty easy to learn. Well, at least the basics are. I'm still having issues juggling more than 3 props. 😛

    what is the gauge of the wire and what is the inside diameter of the links?

    • @ClyFaker
      @ClyFaker  4 года назад

      It's 16 gauge SWG with an ID of 3/8 in.

    • @MyUnquenchableThirst
      @MyUnquenchableThirst 4 года назад

      @@ClyFaker you are so awesome. I cannot believe you replied to my comment on a 3 year old video before i could even finish half! I just finished putting the 5 extra links after row 5 lol
      my only comment to the tutorial is to show the placement of the links when you say "like so" or include a diagram( i don't know how usful it would be to draw a 2D pattern though) i had to rewatch a lot and made a few mistakes because im very new to this. but overall great video and the best pattern for footbag/juggling because it's more spherical. ill be using this for juggling and filling with steel balls because i want really heavy props.

    • @ClyFaker
      @ClyFaker  4 года назад +1

      Just be careful not to make the balls to heavy, since that will lead to the links opening up when you drop them. I may or may not have had that happen...

    • @ClyFaker

    have you ever made butted mail?

    • @ClyFaker
      @ClyFaker  7 лет назад

      +Jerin Beames Yep. All of my projects (including this one) are made using butted mail. On the flip side, I've never made a project using welded or riveted mail.

    • @jerinbeames1722
      @jerinbeames1722 7 лет назад +1

      yeah I meant rivited

    • @ClyFaker
      @ClyFaker  7 лет назад

      +Jerin Beames Yeah, I doubt I'll ever work with riveted since I don't make armor pieces (even out of butted mail). I tend to gravirate more toward micro maille projects, and links that small don't get along well with riveting. 😛
