# Ep 1 - Upanishads - The Essence of Vedic Philosophy

- Upanishads follow the four vedas (Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvaveda), and Brahmanas and Aranyakas. It is in Upanishads that the focus decisively shifts from rituals to knowledge. The vast expanse of ten major Upanishads and many minor ones cover a great array of philosophical concepts and spiritual inquiry. Upanishads hence signify a pivotal juncture in the evolution of the vedic philosophy. They also are a vital sliver of the literary history of ancient India.
Thus, the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute is delighted to bring you a RUclips series of 13 lectures on Upanishads that begins with this first introductory interaction between Dr. Sucheta Paranjpe and Dr. Gauri Moghe. During the course of next 12 sessions, multiple scholars will introduce viewers to each of the 10 major upanishads. There will be two sessions on how to understand upanishads.
On each Tuesday and Friday a new episode of this series will be released. So stay tuned and subscribe to our RUclips channel for regular updates.

"18 Parvans of Mahabharata - An Introductory Online Course on Mahabharata" (Begins on Oct. 07, 21)
The grand epic of Mahabharata is one of the foundational heritages of India. For the Bhandarkar Institute, our work on the Mahabharata is a vital aspect of our legacy. Therefore, we are delighted to announce the first ever online course on Mahabharata that introduces the epic through the exposition of the 18 Parvans (Chapters) of the Mahabharata.The course will be based on the "Critical Edition", which is globally renowned when it comes to the textual study of Mahabharata. this is an introductory course and does not require any prior knowledge of Mahabharata.
The lectures are pre-recorded and are followed by live Q/A. RUclips links to all lectures are provided for repeated viewings, and are valid for 7 days after the session. The course is conducted in English, and via Zoom Webinar.
The course will commence on October 07, 2021 and will be, tentatively, completed on October 30, 2021. The lectures will take place every Monday to Saturday at 7 PM to 8.30 PM.

Upnishads are natural but unless one can read Sanskrit it becomes impossible to get essence out of it. Can you please suggest simple translation in English or Marathi ?

I found listening to Dr, Paranjpe's scholarly exposition on what Upanishads are and their significance in the development of Vedic learning traditions very, very illuminating. The final note of the session , transitioning from ritual to spiritual is worth to learn, remember and practice. It’s like a realized soul transitioning from Karma path to Jyana. Thank you both , for having a great knowledgeable session with audience.
karma is essential for purifying mind. Without which we are not qualified to practice vedantha. Karma should leave one on its own as one's mind is purified by karma and focused by upasana, and lost in vedantha dhyana. No one should deliberately give up karma, (while still enjoying everything else in the world). That is a wrong understanding
