To be fair... it's a 10 year old that can capture almost every creature in it's nation AND travel most of his nation on foot.... AND becomes one of the most powerful trainers in the WORLD at f***ing 10.....
We gotta be honest... in the games, the 10 year olds are actually way too OP... I mean, people make fun of Ash from the anime... but for a 10 year old, he's actually really good... and yet he only took down these organizations because the organizations messed with god-like beings and he took advantage of that.
And it's a freaking kids show...

You can pokemon by there animal name while describing them like how the pokedex calls Pikachu the mouse pokemon
In the Indigo League you can see Pidgeot to eating a worm, not a Caterpie or Weedle, a worm. Also Ash looked intima tank like thing and there were fish, just fish, so maybe the Pokémon Universe does have animals, but that could just be the anime.
