I was so glad when the similarity (same sound engine) to mother (and wario's woods) was pointed out in the commentary. I thought I was just going crazy XD

What a beautiful NES composition. Sim City SNES had a true classical / art music feel to it and it’s amazing this was also done for the NES game using the primitive sound chip.
Wow, what the????? An amazing game composer, thank you soyo oka! I love both this and the SNES SimCity soundtrack! edit - looked her up online, wow, she's very beautiful also!!
I'm curious about the music engine, and its connections to Mother. How much is known about the music engine? Have there been any efforts to document it? Like, which hex codes correspond with notes/effects, that kind of thing.
It uses the typical Nintendo driver at least setup and initalization wise. The only difference what I was able to find programming wise, that this game uses BITMASKS $40h-$42,$44$48h and $50h which you normally won't find in other games, or they just cram the MUS and SFX into a single init routine. For Nintendo NROM titles for every single init they always called BITMASKS: $01,$02,$04,$08,$10,$20,$40,$80h. If you really want to go me into detail: The LOAD address for the engine is at a somewhat obscure address: $97E0 or something, which is quite unusual for a Nintendo driver, since for their later revisions they used the $8000 region (like Mother) or the hardwired ROMbanks for code. At $A000 there is the BOOTSTRAP code locator and after that it starts out setting up the PLAY address which always starts with a snippet: XY BANK:WHATEVER MEMORY ADDRESS: A9 C0 LDA #$C0 XY BANK:WHATEVER MEMORY ADDRESS: 8D 17 40 STA JOY2_FRAME = #$01 Also the ROAR and the "HEAVY TRAFFIC" samples eats up the $C000-$DFFF regions, since for some weird reason they store it as a DPCM instead of a PCM sample. It also seems that the ingame driver has some pulse bugging here and there, and Chris Covell's rip fixes these bugs, while my rip sounds exactly how it was in-game. I hope this was enough in depth analysis for you. :)
Fantastic to see this will be available in a time long past. Feels so new rather than new. It's a special feeling that can be achieved by gaming and the passionate community it brings
@Daniel Samolewicz Regarding your speculations about what Nintendo "would have wanted" to do, the only reason to "keep those things in mind" is to maintain a hatred for Nintendo. With everything that Nintendo has ACTUALLY done to give people several reasons to dislike them, why would you come to an appreciative comment (which by the way gives NO undue credit to Nintendo) and come and complain about what Nintendo "would" do? You're bringing in speculations about what Nintendo "would have wanted" to do, on a comment that never had any praise for Nintendo in the first place. Check yourself and see that your hatred for Nintendo is getting a little out of control - or, just take this bullshit to Reddit.
Thanks for this comprehensive video! Can you make out what the second to last sample is saying before the mighty roar? It sounds "something something reporting heavy traffic"
Hey thanks for the kind words! To be perfectly honest I wasn't sure what was being spoken either (revealing my own ignorance of the actual SimCity game itself -- maybe it's obvious to people who've played it more?). But ewdr8080's response sounds accurate!
i'm not sure who the composer was for Little Nemo: Dreamland but this SimCity ost reminds me a lot of it! here's the link but warning it plays a bit louder than this one: ruclips.net/video/tOJETELKVSI/видео.html edit: ah hmm maybe now that i'm listening to it, they're not so similar, but idk it reminded me of it
So, where do you go for the NSF files? They are neither on the website nor linked to in the video description... nor is the mention of any website that hosts them made.
Ah, so the link at the end of the article does include the NSF, but I believe only the patched version by Chris Covell. Both versions should be available in MrNorbert1994's NSF archive. mrnorbert1994.uw.hu/sound_archive.html
One is included in the zip file linked at the end of the gamehistory.org article. Both versions (glitchy and cleaned up) can be found in MrNorbert1994's NSF archive.

Soyo Oka really was one of Nintendo's best composers.
for rainbow road alone!!!

I agree! I love Pilotwings soundtrack, always have
@Kommisarie Rex lmmfao
Koji Kondo dont make the Super Mario Kart Soundtrack???
Megaopolis has the same composition style as the SNES version, it's pretty uncanny.
Soyo Oka is a musical goddess .
So relaxing and so soothing .......for the ears and the soul
I was so glad when the similarity (same sound engine) to mother (and wario's woods) was pointed out in the commentary. I thought I was just going crazy XD
Same!
Appropriate, considering the SNES version shares many instruments with Earthbound.
It's amazing to hear the Metropolis theme in this unreleased form! It sure did survive intact in the SNES version.
Thanks for putting this video together. Ms. Oka is one of my favorite VGM composers and discovering a lost work of hers is an absolute treasure.
Soyo Oka put this on her instagram!
Incredible stuff! Really surprised that it has almost nothing in common with the SNES soundtrack.
Very relaxing soundtrack. I like it.

The beginning of "Town" sounds similar to the shop music from Faxanadu.
This and mother are some of the best soundtracks the nes has to offer.
Wait did the guy who did the SimCity SNES OST also do Earthbound OST?

Mpf, counting is for DORKS. I like my fraction-of-a-second-eye-watching-impression.
Great. Love the information too. I regret to say I didn't know Soyo Oka by name before this but of course knew and love a lot of her work.
Looking forward to a podcast analysis which, I trust, is coming. :)

A lot of NES games produced by Nintendo during the 1989-1990 period, including "Mother", have very similar sounding music.
I have listened to Capital so many times now. Arrangement will happen!

Omg Disaster Mode is a dissonant version of star power 👌
That Title theme is pure fucking magic. Superb work!!
Does anyone have like, NSF files or whatever? Or raw files of the rips? Would be nice to have.
I'm asking around, too. Post back if you have any luck, and I'll do the same if I do!
According to some, it can be found in the NSF archive here: mrnorbert1994.uw.hu/sound_archive.html
This is wavy! Glad it was preserved.
the game start track fix makes sense, i remember in a early capcom games and maybe castlevania 1-3 those clicking/popping noises are heard
Been waiting for this, for a long time. Can't wait for the remixes
The title theme sounds like the hint screen before entering a level from Quest of Ki (also Famicom/NES) for whatever that means to anyone
Disaster theme sounds like when Bowser take the super star and use it versois you
This Game Is Not Old
Not sure exactly what you mean but I agree regardless
SimCity is timeless all right, but 30 years old is still awfully close to being of age to run for the U.S. presidency
interesting songs but my ears are bleeding

15:13 what is he saying? "??? -reporting heavy traffic"?
I believe it’s “Pilot one, reporting heavy traffic”
does the snes have a smilar sound track? this is just too good
The SNES version only has 1 track in common with this version, but it's all done by the same composer and it's similarly chill. Check it out!
