I've been searchin' and searchin' for a video like this. I have the exact same problem with no cutout in my windows to remove the balance. Great explanation and video. Who cares for the editing part when you're obtaining information like this.Thank you very much.

This trick worked like a gem when replacing my shoe. Saved me cutting a notch into the jamb and cussing a lot. 😂 Thanks for the video!!

Thanks so much for sharing this. I bought a $1500 dollar window and when the delivered it they strapped it down and bent the nailing flanges to the point there was no way to use them. I ended up getting the window for $500 thinking I was going to have to cut the flanges off. In less than 5 minutes they looked like new!!! Awesome!!!

Thanks for sharing this! I just used this technique to fix a balance whose spring had come detached from its bracket and it worked great. I did hold my rails apart a bit too long and warped it because the vinyl cooled while I was doing it. But just as you said, the "memory" fixed it just as easily by re-heating the area and letting it shift back to its original shape. 100%.

I would recommend against this procedure in the future. These shortcuts will degrade the vinyl and shorten its lifespan considerably. I am not trying to be critical I am speaking from over 30 years in the field of residential window repair. Despite what advertisers would have you believe vinyl degrades over time from years of exposure to sun extreme temperature changes of the seasons changing and overtime becomes dried out and more brittle as a result. exposing this material to extreme heat from a hot air gun is only going to contribute to this process and speed it up. Most of the vinyl window manufacturers notched out the top area of the track to allow a place for removal and replacement of worn pivot shoes. Today many of them have stopped doing this for one reason only and imo cause by greed. It takes extra time to notch out for the removal of shoes and skipping that part provides a faster production and output at the manufacturer. They are in the business of making windows as fast as they can and realized they have no vested interest in ease of repair. Regarding my credentials : I have been repairing windows since 1976. I ran a window and door glass replacement and repair business in Virginia Beach for 28 years.

Hi John, is it possible to cut your own notches into the track to remove the shoes or is that a bad idea too?
