    Good story, but a strange ending. They kind of wrote themselves into a corner, not being able to marry off either woman to Arthur. It is hard to know if Arthur was embellishing his romantic past, being overly charming witn a dangerous undertone, or just plain unbalanced.

    Lyrics to the Dick Van Dyke Show Theme
    One of the gems from Dick Van Dyke’s appearance on Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me was the revelation that the theme song to The Dick Van Dyke Show had lyrics. They were written by Morey Amsterdam, who played Buddy Sorrell.
    So you think that you’ve got troubles?
    Well, trouble’s a bubble
    So tell old Mr. Trouble to get lost!
    Why not hold your head up high and
    Stop cryin’, start tryin’
    And don’t forget to keep your fingers crossed.
    When you find the joy of livin’
    Is lovin’ and givin’
    You’ll be there when the winning dice are tossed.
    A smile is just a frown that’s turned upside down
    So smile, and that frown will defrost.
    And don’t forget to keep your fingers crossed.

      I thought the same thing, what better way to get them to stop setting him up on dates. He did say he moved to the suburbs for a quieter life. Probably thought he could get away from people that wanted to set him up all the time.😂

    • @hollybigelow5337
      @hollybigelow5337 Год назад +2

      If it is true, it’s a very odd strategy. If he didn’t want to be fixed up, it would’ve made more sense to use the excuse immediately rather than going on two dates first. Plus, he could have said his therapist has advised him not to go on ANY dates rather than casually say he’s open to being lined up for a first date with anyone. Plus, if he’s okay with a lie that completely destroys his reputation, he could have done it more solidly by saying something like he was going to meet his wife rather than his ex-wife. Plus, there are plenty of guys that really are like this. If it is true, I at least commend him for actively working on it and being honest and not drawing any women in too much. But although it seems far-fetched to me, it is possible he’s saying it to stop them from lining him up.

    Breaking the norms has to start somewhere. The Dick Van Dyke Show along with All in the Family and The Jeffersons were groundbreaking in my opinion. Abuse has been around forever in the world. I wished it didn't but they put on a sit com.A couple of decades earlier, Cagney smashed a woman in the face with a grapefruit!

    Laura's cousin Donna was kind of out there. Lots of unusual interests for the time. She kept safe from creepy Arthur, luckily. So did Sally, thank goodness. She did her usual overacting bit to a tee. Arthur went from being a self-proclaimed bachelor, to a thrice-divorced man, by his own admission, all of a sudden, when it suited him. When Arthur admits to having a violent streak, this episode becomes a train wreck. This was a very out of place episode, for a usually gentle show.

    • @hollybigelow5337
      @hollybigelow5337 Год назад +3

      To be fair, divorced is generally considered a bachelor, but you’re right that he seems to deliberately be saying it in a misleading way.
      Although it definitely is a little darker, I do feel like this episode does a pretty good job of calling attention to a very serious issue in a time when that sort of thing wasn’t talked about in a balanced, relatively light-hearted way without diminishing the seriousness of the issue at hand. Often, domestic abusers convince their victims that domestic violence is no big deal, and this episode does a great way of showing that even weird Donna and desperate Sally are obviously both too good to put up with domestic abuse even from a man who is extremely charming and is actively working on his problem. They do it in a way that isn’t preachy because the whole point of the joke is that it’s obvious that that behavior isn’t acceptable. To someone on the outside, it probably is obvious, but to someone actively being gaslit it could be life changing to be reminded that it is obviously unacceptable. Who knows, this episode may even have been the exact wake up call some single woman at the time needed to feel okay breaking up with a particularly charming, abusive man even if they were afraid of being single forever.

    I don't think that divorced men should refer to themselves as bachelors. Especially if they were married more than once. They should have a different name for being single cause bachelor will always make people assume they were never married, and typically unattachable. Or something. Or at least I would think.

    Didn't care for the ending of this one. I knw this is a comedy, but to after he leaves the two of them start playfully hitting each other as if their neighbor hitting the women he 'loves' is no big deal, is extremely disturbing. A better ending would have been if they talked to both ally and Donna and warned them. Remember he'd sid that when his psychiciatrist says he's better he'd like to go out with both of them again. NOT A GOOD IDEA.
