I’m so sorry man. Things will get better, and tho you may not have her beside you, you have her in your heart and memories. May she rest in peace and I hope you may feel happy again
Who knew? Possibly the most beautiful song ive heard in the last 10 yrs - and sung by a sea shanty group. This brought me to tears. It's a vision of heaven.
I binge listen to this from C-Sides regularly, and I have to say, this gorgeous video more than adequately lives up to any expectations I could have possibly had
I sing your songs to my girlfriend every night so she falls asleep. Thank you so much for your amazing music and keep up the great work. -sincerely Your Wingman
This moves me in a way I can't quite describe, but I'll try. The gentle yet firm harmonies, the heartfelt delivery, the heavy lyrics, the guitar work just leave you thinking and feeling (maybe shedding tears). They all speak of loss and regret, but with a hint of hope if not for yourself than for whoever you care about most. I could be grasping at straws here, but I just had to be honest. Thank you for another masterful piece Longest Johns.
Amazing. Extraordinary. Interstellar. Uplifting (I'm running out of adjectives). Beautiful harmonies, beautiful scenery. Bless you lads for the incredible music you create. I hear the strains vibrating through the ether of the universe. Andy's bass always resonates so deeply (in all senses 😀).
That was insanely beautiful. The song, the location, the light, the whole video. I think the onion ninjas have infiltrated youtube, because my eyes are all watery. Thank you for yet another very beautiful song and video. I love you guys sooooooooooo much
Beautiful, beautiful! One of my favorite songs from C-Sides, and now this gorgeous video to go with it.This is one of those times I wish multiple likes were possible! ❤
Adorable, adequate, admirable. C-Sides was such a surprise to me when it came out and this is one of my favourites from it. What I would give to see JD make a guitar tutorial for this arrangement! It's stunning and beautiful!
Was wondering now that the studio sessions album stretch goal was met, if that album will continue to include songs that are actively coming out, or if there’s going to be a cut off point. Otherwise this albums looking to be pretty long, not that I’m complaining of course, the more the merrier! Cheers!
Everything about this one is gorgeous. That guitar is a masterpiece of sound and style. What a nice way to start my day, listening to this. Thanks. PS- I just listened to the Llewyn Davis/Oscar Issacs version of this. I appreciate even more your take on this song and your ability to hear and feel what is in this song. PPS- I'm just mesmerized by this. It's so beautiful. Thank you for the care and sensitivity you poured into this one- and for going to find such a beautiful, fitting setting to record it.
You guys shine in anything you choose to cover. An awesome song and a beautiful video are adequate, but are only part of the puzzle 😜. If it were not for your abilities, hard work, and dedication your videos would not touch us all so deeply. Can't wait to see you in Chicago ❤️
Thank you! Such a beautiful song. I’m sure you had a ton of requests for it (myself included). I did a version for my girlfriend a few years ago. We’re married now!
This is one of my favourites ! It is just so calming yet quite sad. I absolutely love the beautiful scenery and light in this and of course your harmonies are just delightful. I will definitly come back to this video/ song whenever I feel down. 😊 P.S. : hope you weren't too cold, it looks like it wasn't very warm ❄
Thank you so much for yet ANOTHER wonderful rendition…. I absolutely love your harmonies and compositions…❤ In addition, my two daughters love your version of “Leave her Johnny” - I’m sure they’ll love this one just as much…I know I do 😊
Thank you so so so much for posting your cover of this song. I've listioned to others singing it / the original and it's just not the same... I whould dig though your stream replays to listion to you guys sing it insteed... but now I don't need to! Yippie!!!!
This is not a unique sentiment. In fact, it seems to be the prevailing one in these comments, but I agree so I say: this is a beautiful song, and a beautiful rendition. Definitely one for the playlists. Proper job!
One of my favorite folk songs. The history behind it is convoluted and sad, like many folk songs. It was recorded by an ethnomusicologist in the early 1900's, sung by a black woman just named in the notes as "Dink." Any original recording was lost, but the song managed to survive through published music and recordings by other artists. Presumably, Dink received basically nothing for this or the other songs she shared.(John Lomax's writings on African-American music at times very racist). Now, over one hundred years later, the song has had a resurgence in popularity, following "Inside Llewyn Davis."
Judged by our standards today, Lomax could well have phrased things differently. His deep respect and appreciation for the musicians he recorded cannot be overstated. The effort he made immortalized many of them and gave us songs like this one that would easily have been lost. Perhaps you could get off your high horse and use your energy to contribute as Lomax did. In his own way, he made the world a better place. Think about the heart connection between Dink and these musicians. It's a beautiful thing.
A great video, for a great song. I love your work boys. Also, JD, what an extraordinary guitar you have - magnificent design, with the blue pattern on the inlay! All three of you are in peak voice, I reckon! Also, Robbie, congratulations on your recent nuptials! And last, but not least, Andy - a top notch beard you do possess, more power to you! 🎼🎵😎
JD's sister designed the pattern on the guitar neck & his wife the ship at the top. Custom made guitar. Decoration is paui shell. Not sure if I spelt that right.
I love the way you're harmonising on this. I've not seen the film, but it's obviously got some great music in it. Hopefully you make it back to the Broadstairs Folk Festival this year, and hopefully I will be well enough to see you. I bloody ought to be, I live on the seafront, it's not much of a commute. =] Also, if you're still taking requests, I think the Phil Ochs classic The Men Behind The Guns would be an absolutely perfect fit for you to cover.
The Corries did a comedy song called the "Bricklayers Song" - always good to remember that someone is having a worse day than you... Also have you ever done Scarborough Fayre? One of your songs had an outro which sounded just like the Scarborough intro, and I wondered if it was a medley which had been split?
@@katienordwind2463 I think so as well! There's other songs from the movie that I would love them to sing as well such as the song in the tavern, but I don't think that would happen since they aren't full songs.
A historical note on the song: About 100 years ago, a man named John Lomax traveled throughout the American South recording/documenting musicians, mostly Black, whose music would otherwise have been lost. He recorded an old Black woman named Dink singing this. I haven't read Lomax's notes about this song. She may have written it, though the line, "I'd fly up the river, to the one I love," makes me think it may be older. "Up (or down) river" refers to an enslaved person who was "sold off," often never to be seen again. Given this, I think the Longest Johns nailed it.

Great quote! Beautiful.
" if it was never new but it never gets old, then it's a folk song" Dave van ronk
I've always said Robbie is outstanding in his field
How right you are 😂
😁
😏
My mom's funeral was yesterday and I started crying listening to this because it reminded me of her.
Mine was 'Will the Circle Be Unbroken' my sympathies...
Condolences... 😢♥️
I’m so sorry man. Things will get better, and tho you may not have her beside you, you have her in your heart and memories. May she rest in peace and I hope you may feel happy again
I wish her rest and you solace.
~hug~ if you want. Saying goodbye to your mother is one of the hardest things.💝
Who knew? Possibly the most beautiful song ive heard in the last 10 yrs - and sung by a sea shanty group. This brought me to tears. It's a vision of heaven.
The Longest Johns: making eyes and ears happy since 2012. 🥰
And then I read my comment to myself and realise how that sounds. 🤣🤣 I meant the SCENERY.
One of my favourite songs. Love it so much, even if it is rather sad.😪
One of my favorites too 🌺
Lost a friend - a man, long and tall ... This song brings healing.
I binge listen to this from C-Sides regularly, and I have to say, this gorgeous video more than adequately lives up to any expectations I could have possibly had

Wow! This is beautiful! 😃 "Dink's Song", immortalized. I get so much enjoyment out of your music. 😊🎵🎶
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it
I just platonically love you so much Johns. You litterally saved and stole my heart with this one at the same time ❤ One Love

Beautiful, beautiful! One of my favorite songs from C-Sides, and now this gorgeous video to go with it.This is one of those times I wish multiple likes were possible! ❤
Absolutely stunning...both the song and the scenery.
The first time I heard this song I shed tears. I continue to shed tears when I hear it and that will never change no matter how much I listen to it
I agree. It's definitely a weepy😢
This is, quite simply, one of the most beautiful videos you've made, both for the eyes and the ears.
Hats off to you getting this filmed in the small window of light you've chosen!!! Much respect. Looks beautiful, sounds beautiful. 🫡
I absolutely adore your rendition of this beautiful song. This is a fantastic video to match. 💚
I will never tire of listening to this song. It's gorgeous
A beautiful song beautifully sung, very poignant for me since I lost my husband 18 months ago 😢❤
My sympathies
Wonderful song, wonderful video.
My favourite version now!
Just so beautiful. You're probably going to get a lot of Supernatural and Louden Swain fans coming around for a listen.
God's name is Chuck 😂

Oh my god I love that song :) What a great interpretation from the boys ♥
So so beautiful
Oh this is indescribably beautiful

Really lovely version of this song. And that has to be the most beautiful guitar I’ve ever seen!
Ah, beautiful.
So beautiful on so many levels, love it so much!

You took the words right out of my mouth!! ❤❤❤❤❤
God, that view reminds me how beautiful the English country side can be. I need to know the name of that park so i can visit someday
Wotton Hill
So well done!
Lovely ❤
Another great one lads
That is so good.

Can't wait to see y'all when you come to Virginia.
Jebait myself every time so hard, cause my favorite song, Icy Acres, opens with this lyric~~~
Aaaaargh!
I've never heard of the movie that inspired this video, and I want to check it out, but I can't stop listening long enough to go look it up
Can’t wait to see you in Oxford in March! 🖤
This is not a unique sentiment. In fact, it seems to be the prevailing one in these comments, but I agree so I say: this is a beautiful song, and a beautiful rendition. Definitely one for the playlists. Proper job!
Another great cover from a great band! May I suggest a cover of St. Therese by the Stillwater Hobos.

Next I would love to see a studio version of Sam Hall B) (not a requirement of course...)
Lovely. Just delightful. Warms me heart, brothers. On another note have you ever considered doing a cover of a Kate Rusby song?
What is this lovely place? I would love to visit it.
Love it boys! Thanks a mill!
How about Whiskey in the Jar next?
I’d love to hear you do 10,000 miles

Speaking of Fare Thee Well, a cover of Fare Thee Well, Miss Carousel by Townes Van Zandt would be amazing 😍😍😍
Donk (Shlonkon) Song

Fantastic rendition, my fave is Rob Benedicts version in Supernatural, but this is definitely up there!
A cover of "Big Hewer," "White Squall," or "Come by the Hills" would be great!
Does anyone have the tab/sheet music for this ? I really want to learn this song
I comment this on most videos, but I would love to hear you guys sing Row Me Bully Boys from the Robbin Hood movie.
I am sure Alan Doyle would be deighted!
@@katienordwind2463 I think so as well! There's other songs from the movie that I would love them to sing as well such as the song in the tavern, but I don't think that would happen since they aren't full songs.
Video #3 of asking for the currently YT exclusives (Shoals of Herring, Chemical Worker song, Cold Winds, etc.) to be added to spotify? :)
You should do a cover of Big Hewer.
Will have a check
Where is this filmed?looks like the cotswolds
amazing where's that hill located?
In memory of Dave
Who sang the bass in that one? It's so beautiful
!!!!!!!!
Anyone know where they filmed this?

Can someone kindly educate me as to who Dink is :)?

I think God sang this song (Supernatural Fan here)
