    I ordered a Shoprine for myself. I should be getting it tomorrow and I got a send out strap from Max, but it'll take at least another week for me to get that.
    I asked for my strap to be actually black with black stitching and silver colored snaps and Max said he'd do it.
    I know a lot of people will say that a Crumrine should always be on brown leather, but the belt always looked black on WCW TV during the mid-late '90s -- which is the era I watched in my childhood -- and I haven't watched much NWA/WCW content before 1994 so I never knew that the strap was originally cherrywood brown that became discolored over the years until around 2016 when I started researching the belt. (I also thought the plates were all-gold since they became dull and tarnished over the years plus the WWE versions were all-gold with black straps). It was releathered in 1999 and the new strap was black with black stitching, so the Crumrine plates were on black leather for a short time until WCW replaced it with the all-gold cast copy. While the gold snaps look better, I went with the silver or nickel to be more TV accurate.
    The hardest part was deciding whether to get white or black stitching. The black stitching looked pretty boring but the white stitching just doesn't look right to me on black leather and the stitching on the original strap wasn't visible on TV most of the time. Plus, I have several items that are made of black leather with white stitching and I know that white stitching tends to turn a dingy brown color over time, which is probably what happened to the stitching on the original strap as well (hence, why it wasn't very visible in later years). I ultimately went with black stitching. I saw a picture of Booker T holding the belt while he was champ. The two-tone plates, black leather, black stitching and silver snaps looked absolutely amazing and that's what inspired me to go with that look.
    I do plan on uploading a video when I get it since, as far as I know, no one has done a black strap releather on the Shoprine.

      The strap on the real WCW big gold made by Charles Crumrine was on a cordovan cores strap, not “Cherry Red” as you say above

    • @thecarolinabull01
      @thecarolinabull01 6 месяцев назад +2

      @@showstopper247Yes, it was a shade of Cordovan called "Cherry wood" says so in the book on page 51.
      I don't care what the original color was anyway. I wanted black, I got black. It looked black on TV during the Monday Night Wars, which is the era of wrestling I grew up watching, so that's what I went with.
      EDIT: Oh, and Charles Crumrine didn't make the belt. He died on May 22, 1985. The belt was ordered on November 20, 1985. The plates were made by Crumrine Jewelers silversmith Victor Ortiz. The original leather was made by Ralph Harris of Harris Leather. The black strap that replaced it in 1999 was made by Andre Frietas of AFX Studios.

      I have the book. If you're referring to the snap color, the book doesn't highlight the snaps very well. There is only about two photos that show that they are nickel. One is on page 58 of Ralph Harris looking at the strap and the other is on page 60.

    @mr. Cynical - as far as performing the transfer of the plates to the send out strap, can any idiot do this, or is it complicated for the WWE Shop Crumrine?

    • @Mr.Cynical92
      @Mr.Cynical92  7 месяцев назад +1

      No. All you need is a box knife and a screwdriver. Cut the backing to expose the screws and then unscrew the plates.

      @@Mr.Cynical92I'm a bit less satisfied with mine. I noticed after a couple of months that the dye is coming off around the edges. Might be because mine is black, but it still pisses me off. There also seem to be little bits and pieces here and there where the material is peeling off. I've been using leather conditioner on it, so I don't know if that did something to it, but it definitely wasn't like that when I initially bought it.
      I've thought about having it re-dyed, but I think I'd be better off saving up for a new strap from a different belt maker since I'll likely have to replace it within a year or two anyway.

    • @Mr.Cynical92

      @thecarolinabull01 I'm sorry to hear that. Mine lives on the Flair mannequin so it never moves, therefore there's not fading or anything. Which leather product are you using? I use Chemical Guys sprayable leather cleaner and have had no adverse effects on my leather straps.

      @@Mr.Cynical92Herman Survivor's Leather Lube. I used that on my leather shoes, which helped soften them up considerably. I've only put it on the belt twice.
      I admittedly do mess with it more than I probably should, but not enough to where the dye should be coming off this soon. I've owned lots of black leather items and I've not had this happen before.
      The holes weren't punched properly where the right side plate goes. I had to pretty much force the plate on and it won't go on completely straight, it's slightly crooked.
      I also just don't like the look of it. It's modeled after the WWE Shop strap, which has barely any visible leather around the main plate and there's not much distance between the side plates and the snaps. It looks more like the AFX strap rather than the original Harris strap. That's not Max's fault though.
      I initially wanted to go with Paul Martin, but I ordered from Max because his was cheaper and the picture on Paul's website at the time wasn't even the correct strap. PM Belts have since updated their strap to look more like the Harris strap (more exposed leather around the main plate and more space between the edges of the side plates and the first set of snaps). I've thought about buying from Paul, but it's pretty pricey (over 400 USD including shipping) and it has a backing while the original belt didn't. I asked if they'd not put a backing on and they said no. I did ask if they'd at least make sure that the backing didn't cover the back of the male snaps and they said they could do that.
      But ever since I bought a car a few months ago, $400 for a piece of leather isn't something I can do right now, so I'll have to either save up for it or find something cheaper that's of a better quality than Max's. There is a local western store that makes custom leather. I've thought about going to them to see if they can repair my current strap or make a new one, but I think it'd be better to go with an actual belt maker if I get a new one.

    5:44 why doesn’t the plate sit flush against the leather ?

    • @Mr.Cynical92
      @Mr.Cynical92  8 месяцев назад +1

      My guess it that it was new leather and it was still stiff in some spots. I filmed this right after I had attached the plates to the strap.

    • @thecarolinabull01
      @thecarolinabull01 6 месяцев назад

      Don't know about Cynical's version (I'd assume his is the same as mine since mine is from MW Belts as well), but mine is thinner than the stock strap, so that's likely why there's space between the plates and the leather.
      The side plates on mine don't sit very well on the leather, the right one is slightly crooked because the holes are a little off and one of the bottom screws requires an insane amount of effort to screw into place tightly. I've readjusted them so it's a bit less crooked, but unless I get the holes repunched (and doing so might make it worse), I don't think it'll ever be completely straight.

      @RussianNightmare then please upload a video of the big gold that is not held on brown leather. Every photo I've seen of Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes, Sting, Ricky Steamboat, Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, the Giant, Goldberg, and Bret Hart. I would really like to see the photos you have of the big gold not being on brown leather. Every single photo I've seen from 1986 until the tale end of WCW shows that belt being on brown leather. Especially since in the book "Big Gold" they show the original brown leather strap made by Harris leather, they also show the people from Harris leather holding the belt, also there are photos of Charlotte Flair or Ashley Flair whatever you want to call her, holding the big gold belt on Conrad Thompson's Instagram and you can clearly see that is brown leather. I really want to see your video refuting that's a big gold was on brown leather.

      @@Mr.Cynical92 Take your pick. The BG was on Cordovan colored leather. You should know that over the years that the leather was stained from sweat, blood and so on. This tainted, if you will the actual color. Please ask Conrad what the REAL color is. I was lucky enough to visit his residence, when I go to see it. That aside, a lot of us have known for years that it is on Cordovan colored leather not brown. Cordovan has a reddish hue to it.

    • @RussianNightmare
      @RussianNightmare Год назад +1

      @@Mr.Cynical92 -- Lastly, I do not make videos. Ask Conrad or better yet as Dave Millican who verified that it was the OG BG before Conrad purchased it. Let me just add one last thing. I am not trolling, trying to throw shade or discredit you by any means. The BG was actually on Cordovan colored leather. I know I am a stranger to you and have no credibility but feel free to ask around to those who have been a part of the belt collecting community for decades (I am one of those). No picture from a magazine or old video footage will prove my point since HD didn't exist then. At the end of the day if you're happy with brown, then that's what matters. I will be getting my shop crumrine on cordovan leather. Also, there is a reason why the shop Crumrine strap had red in it. It was trying to simulate the Cordovan color.
