    "Stranded" in Ireland during most of the Celtic Tiger years doing a PhD, and with very little English at the beginning. Together with charming Anne Doyle of the news, they were my real English teachers. What better way to learn a foreign language than that. Wonderful Irish comedic talent, providing insight on what being Irish really meant: wit and depth, but in sort of a lighthearted and unassuming way. Took me a while to understand it. God bless them all.

    I've just realised the power of characters in Father Ted.
    It did a huge part in calming the view of the Catholic Church even though there were a lot of atrocities still happening.
    Ted, Dougle & Jack are the real people that priests are, whilst Brennan is supposed to portray the god fearing evil terryfying priests, all his mannerisms seem to be hateful at every turn, but he's made an ass of at almost every appearance, maybe this is simple to everyone, but I just keep finding things I love about the series.
    Also, don't know if it's official priest wear but that Cape even looks like Dracula

    I love the way Brennan keeps swallowing Ted's ridiculous lies about the rabbits; he just takes it for granted that something stupid and nonsensical is going to happen so doesn't even get suspicious.
    Also, I always found that the funniest bit about the railing handcuffs isn't that they didn't cut through the chain or the railing, it's that the fence was easily big enough for one of them to fit through if they just crouched down.

    I remember my Dad (we're Irish) talking about how great Father Ted was. In Ireland, is common if you become famous to move to Britain because you'll get better exposure there but my Dad said that Ireland would have never greenlit something like this because it's depiction of the church (especial a Bishop in a bath with a woman). Ireland does love its dark comedy and dark themes but it would never have shown the church as anything but holey in the nineties. Of course Channel 4 was available in Ireland so it didn't stop Father Ted being available to the entire population so in the end it really didn't matter.

    • @yermanoffthetelly
      @yermanoffthetelly 2 года назад +2

      Nah that's not quite accurate. RTE ran a comedy show called Leave it to Mrs O'Brien in the mid to late 80s about priests and their housekeeper (it was a tame inoffensive type of comedy like 70s British comedy) I think they were concerned it would be too similar. I believe they did make an offer for the show along with the BBC but they went with Channel 4 instead.
      Ireland was getting far less conservative by the mid 90s and developed more risqué type comedy shows hosted by Seán Moncrieff and Barry Murphy (of Apres Match). It was initially shoved to a late night timeslot to test the waters but became very popular. RTE entered it's golden era by the 2000s making some actually pretty good stuff. After 2008 it went to crap and doesn't produce anything original anymore. Copies of reality shows and daytime tv. Utter muck.
