Great question! The split view doesn't offer a vertical option. However, one workaround is to select Window > Tile > Vertically (or Menu > Window > Tile > Vertically in the new 2023 interface) after opening the a second PDF.

@@erinwrightwriting Like Microsoft Adobe is contributing to slow down the efficiency of the whole world. Who really needs to split horizontally on a 16:9 screen? This is really lame and it gives a overview of the real quality of the staff working there. Absolutely not detail orientated.

That is a fantastic question! I haven't found a reliable way to open two PDFs in split view within Acrobat itself. However, if you open the two PDFs in separate screens (not separate tabs), you can reduce the size of each screen and position them next to each other. It's not ideal, but it works.
