Harvesting Juniper Berries in Freezing Cold Desert

- California juniper (Juniperus californica) grows abundantly in arid terrains of southern California and northern Baja California at elevations between 2500 and 5000 feet (750 - 1500 meters). It produces berry-like cones that take nearly a year to ripen and have a history of medicinal use as well as food use by local indigenous peoples. Juniper berries are a readily available survival food when none other is found, plus they are a good source of anti-oxidants.
In this video I endure a chilly morning on a windy desert mountain peak covered with a light dusting of snow and take refuge in a shallow cave before descending to the valley below to harvest juniper berries and then quench my thirst by drinking from a puddle of rain water.

@@ChadZuberAdventures There was such a thing as trade even then. Tribal relations ensured that work was distributed evenly. Gatherers, hunters, tailors, builders. Not a one man job. It's nice that you put passion in what you do but unless you warm yourself off-camera, this is not very smart. You can suffer kidney damage all the way to brain damage from exposure to cold, even in short periods of time.

This guy is for real. Take a close look at the berry collection process. He anticipates the exact trajectory of the falling berries without any modern tools like a spyglass or even a ruler. No way this Chad is not a retired Navy seal.
I understand this teaches something about survival, but can you not make clothes on your spare time so you can wear something for the cold days?
Yeah, if I had spare time. Training the body to endure cold is also a good survival skill. Ancient peoples could endure much more than modern man.

@@ChadZuberAdventures I was expecting a lot of cringe when first saw the title of the video, but I actually like it, I also fuck my body to increase endurance for specific things, ex in the winter I always wear outfits that would fit more in spring/autumn, in the course of years temperatures of -10 Celsius are nothing for me dressed with a t-shirt and a leather jacket. The only issue I had with pushing my body to endure abnormal temperatures was frostbites, no matter how your body gets used to it, the tissue is still affected. There is a guy in the Netherlands that trains people to bath in snow and frozen water to increase over all body endurance.

The intense quality of the sounds that you make are really inspiring. I could feel you shivering to stay warm and I could sense your intense enjoyment as you ate the Juniper berries. The fast movement of the passing clouds reminded me of watching the original movie "The Time Machine", where it became really cold after nuclear war's effect on the earth.
Awesome comment man! Yeah, the shivering was real. It was really, really difficult to shoot this video. It took me 7 hours to shoot it. I was shivering the whole time. It was very very uncomfortable, but yet soooo beautiful that I didn't want to come down from the mountain.

People used to eat them a lot but now most people don't even know they are edible. *** Some species are poisonous *** But this species is edible and I have been eating them every day since I went here two weeks ago. I have experienced good health benefits from California juniper berries.
