I remember when this album was released and this song was a stand out to me. Then I found out it was written about her friends who were dying of aids, and it made me like it even more. This was never released as a single but it was a big radio hit in Brazil. I still like it a lot.
Great review! It’s a beautiful song and the passion in her voice is so special
Such great songs will never be written, sung by any other artists, ever. She is such a consummate songwriter, record producer, singer, and stage performer. She is one of a kind, very very talented, beautiful both physically and soully, she will never be duplicated.
Masterpiece! Her singing here is perfect! Vulnerable and full of raw emotion!
Another great, insightful reaction thank you. If you watch the Blond Ambition tour, can I recommend the one recorded in Nice, France? If I remember correctly, this is the one she filmed for HBO so the quality is better than some of the other versions. This was my first big concert and one of the best I've experienced to this day!
Gorgeous song! In my top 10 of Madonna songs.
The song is actually about a friend who died of AIDS. At this point, the epidemic was at its high, with no hope of cure or an effective treatment in sight. Madonna lost many of her closest friends to the disease (many of them were Hispanic) and became one of the first big names ro advocate for the cause - and she remains as one of its most important allies ever. Even though the song is not explicit about it (it was a taboo subject at the time) she included a "facts sheet" on the album about safe sex and HIV/AIDS (in some countries like Brazil it was imprinted right on the album back cover for everyone to see) callled "The Facts About Aids" - that was aimed to fight the prejudice about it (people didn't even want to touch those who were infected and there were a lot of misinformation). No other artist of her caliber had the courage to touch the subject at the time, not even the US President would.
As for the song, it had a huge appeal to latin audiences for obvious reasons. In Brazil it was a huge success even though it was never released as a single. To this day people know more this song then Express Yourself or Oh Father, it's between her classics that are always played on the flashback radio stations.
And yeah, I love that chorus so much ❤
You're the first person ever who does not really like this precious song. I've always loved her vulnerable voice here and the instrumentation is really moving. ❤
With the theme of the song being what it is/was, I feel it fits how she uses her vocals also as an instrument to set the mood so to speak. You can hear the grief in her voice and you don't have to listen to the lyrics to know it's a sad song.
Congratulations, there is hardly any reaction to this incredibly beautiful song
It's about people who died of HIV AIDS , including many of the people she knew and were close friends with. It's about the general public and governments ignoring the plight of people dying of and living with HIV AIDS at the time, from early 80s, when it was widely considered only a "gay disease". She's calling out for sympathy and for help .
This sound was released here, in Brazil, on the rádio and became a huge hit. I guess here was the only place this happened
Hi Ace, you have almost closed out the 80s. Dont think I’ve missed it but there is a demo called each time you break my heart that she wrote and the gave to Nick Kamen from the True Blue sessions and the a song called Supernatural that she put on the B side to Cherish that are worthy of reviewing if you want to close the era out properly before you hit 90s Madonna and the all important Blond Ambition tour
C+? Sad. This is a stand out for me. Very fitting for the album, besides the title track and album opener, this song feels second most destined and belonging on it. I love the hoarce vocal delivery on the chorus and can't imagine the song without it, not off-putting at all. Love the male vocalist joining her in the chorus too. Yes it's an album track but perfect closer (Act of Contrition) is more an outro than a song.
Not your favorite? I love the raw vocals. It shows her passion on the subject matter. This album gives a lot of personal insight from the death of her mother, her marriage to Sean Penn and her friend from AIDS,
