"Jessie" is actually Patrick Leonard's daughter, one of the main co-producers of the album. Madonna had an interaction with her which let the singer to think about in her relationship with her late mother. I think she uses this song as a metaphor of what her childhood should have been if her mother were alive, having "Oh Father" in contrast to what really it was.

It's a gorgeous fairytale song that's wildly underrated. Aside from the silly animation, it's a beautifully written, sang and composed song.

A+ Madonna’s Classic 1989 video. Love it. 🥰 the Animation is a masterpiece. YES ! That Little girl represents Madonna’s childhood than later or the next song Oh Father this little blonde girl go on with the history line.

Some of us have warned you Ace 😂 Yeah it's pretty clear it's not a 'Madonna video'. Can't wait for the next one though!
On a side note: have you heard bout her record-breakiing concert in Copacabana beach in Rio last week? It was historical in many ways, 1.6 million people attended, making it the biggest crowd for a stand alone artist ever. Crowd built up over the week as people camped it front of her hotel - sited across the street from the stage. The city was taken over, there were Madonna everywhere you go. It was broadcasted nation wide and broght Brazil's biggest network it's best ratings in 6 years. She was officially declared honorary citizen of Rio. I was there, arrived by Wednesday to see the show on Saturday, I can't describe how surreal and distopic that was, still digesting all that happened. Girl still making huge waves at 65 💪

I think this video was just officially release in Europe. It’s a cute video, but I don’t feel like we can compare it to the other videos from this album. funny thing is that this song was out during Christmas and it is still on the Christmas playlist in UK.

Hahaha, I think in UK was promoted as a Christmas song!...it's a sweet song dedicated to Patrick Leonard's little daughter and maybe it had could be better to be a single out of the album because it doesn't match in a record like "like a prayer"...
Allthough it's also interesting and heavy to see two songs about childhood together, where one is like you said, a Disney world, and the other so dark and sad like "Oh father"...the contrast...

This is her Beatles homage (think "Eleanor Rigby", "Penny Lane"). All of the songs on "Like a Prayer" are influenced by Madonna's musical heroes as it were. Jessie is producer and LAP collaborator Pat Leonard's daughter, but the song isn't really about her. It's about childhood innocence and how one second it's all "pink elephants and lemonade" and all of a sudden, your life can change and a darkness can descend on it, seemingly from out of nowhere, which is the transition into "Oh Father", the next song on this album, which deals with Madonna's relationship with her father (and father figures) after the death of her mother. You have to listen to the two songs, in order, to fully understand what she's doing. The animation is done by Erica Russell who also did the very similar looking video to Elton John's "Club at the End of the Street" video. The track was released as a Christmas time single in the UK and I think it reached No.5, probably on Madonna's name alone as it's not really a strong track.

Sounds like your wrestling with your perception of Madonna rather than appreciating the artistic vision that comes from her 🙄

It's all about diversity, isn't it? If every video would be like the one for "Oh Father", wouldn't it be a bit boring?
