My ASL teacher had us watch this video to recite in class for a fluency check, and I just realized after watching it for like the 10th time that it's actually my teacher in the video, just 12 years younger. I thought it was just a random refernce video, and didn't recognize him for like two weeks. Clearly, I'm very stupid.
As a CODA, this was a great flashback to my Dad telling this story. (Yes, it is that old). Now that I'm teaching ASL, it's great to polish this off and share it with my students. Great job signing this in true ASL fashion.
Feedback: I like your ASL Timber, narrative story. I really liked your facial expressions. You did a really good job of acting out being confused when the huge tree wouldn’t fall. Thank you for sharing.
EDIT: *STOP CALLING ME SIR PLEASE.* : ) here's basically what happens (it might be a little off so keep that in mind) hey lemme tell you a story theres a big tall buff guy (the lumberjack) he goes to work and brings his axe and his lunchbox and walks into the woods he sees a couple trees that vary in size but settles on a medium size tree he starts to chop at the tree and it falls over he keeps walking and finds another tree to chop down and that one falls over too eventually the lumberjack is hungry so he sits down and eats a sandwich, an apple, a candy bar, and a soda (pop) then he gets up and keeps walking he passes a few more trees and sees a huge one so he decides to chop that one down too he screams TIMBERRRRRR! but the tree doesn't fall he decides to call a doctor to see if he can help "whats up?" "same old same old" "the tree won't fall" "what? the tree won't fall?" "will you come over here?" "yeah ok I'll come over" the doctor comes over puts on a stethoscope and check out the tree the doctor tells the lumberjack that the tree is deaf the lumberjack is like "whaaaaaaat?!" the doctor hands the lumberjack with the letters to sign at the tree the lumberjack signs T-I-M-B-E-R the tree falls and the lumberjack is like "yeah!" the end :) keep in mind thats just the summery and it might be a little off but that's pretty much what happens
great job narrating this story!! I am new to ASL and am trying many things to enhance my learning. This was great! Very expressive and easy to understand. You are a terrific story teller.
Really easy to understand. Thank you! I cringed that the threw his garbage all over the forest though. I want to see the version where he recycles the soda can. LOL
Fun for me. I’m hard of hearing and wear dual hearing aids and I sign. My wife and kids don’t since I can speak. It’s so fun to get to see someone sign since I don’t get to very often. I come here to RUclips videos to get a bit of interaction (yes, I know they can’t see me…)
Back when I was starting out with learning ASL, the teacher showed this in class and we all understood with the signs we did know and context clues! ASL is an amazing language
Hello! I've been learning ASL (and now self teaching) for quite some time. I've been looking to work on my respective skills and you are AMAZING for newer ASL speakers. For the first time ever I understood the entire story and thought it was great! Thank you! I see that this was posted awhile ago. I've joined your channel and I hope you have tons more! (I also watch Keith Wann, Signing Time, ASL stories for children - all which help)
I love the story and this telling of it. What is the sign at 2:38-2:39 in response to "what's up?" It looks like both y-hands, palms down, circling in front of the chest -- kind of like "play."
i know this is a lot to ask but could someone translate this exactly for me word for word? i need a gloss for class. i know what hes talking about by putting things together but im in ASL 1 and i need a little help. also this was super funny, i love how he calls a doctor to check the tree lol. and when he looks at a paper on how to sign TIMBER, its soo funny!
It's not so much a word, but the grammar/mouth morphism of "CHA" to indicate the tree is BIG. We use "cha" to indicate lots of things that are big, like when we sign "house" and if it's a big house, as we're signing that word, we mouth CHA to indicate it's really big.

This was a lot of fun to watch. Even if I didn’t know all the signs I could still understand the story since the signs are so expressive.

I’ll have to remember that.
