Ludi: Here is how you can use this for genocide!
He understands the community I guess
Its a game about colonizing and conquering the world. Bro is just lore accurate
I never thought we would be able to recreate the holidomor in eu4
My life just revolves around eu5 updates now
And your girlfriend "EU4"
I'm curious about how this will age
For real, i get you bro
get a job nega
Starvation = Ludi, "Omg I love that, that is the best think ever"
Then proceeds to give a tutorial on how to Holodomor a province
@@thedeadlysquidward1641 it's easy, just go revolution!
Average eastern european response
Napoleon hates this dev diary
Hitler agrees
In 1585 surrounded Spanish Tercios after an extremely cold night used frozen over ice to capture the Dutch ships that surrounded their position. Admiral Hohenlohe-Neuenstein responded by saying: "In my opinion, it seems that God is Spanish to work so great a miracle for them.
A Swedish king once marched across the danish straits in winter to knock Denmark out of a war.
But if it means marching on ice, what happens if the ice melts ? Didn't expect to reenact Alexander Nevsky in EU5.
Karl Gustav across the belt
I was litteraly in Stockholm a few weeks ago visiting a bunch of museums including drottingholm and this directly came to mind !
I think its mentioned that they just drown or die.
Let's be real, culture in these paradox games has never really been seen as culture by the playerbase, it's ethnicity. And it's true that a majority of Jews do not marry non-Jews, so you would have to convert them before assimilating them, in that way.
Well, in a sense, what Paradox means by "culture" always was more closer to "the group the people of that location assimilate themselves to"
Even in CK3 where your culture defines your language and social behavior (which is closer to what a culture actually is) it's still somewhat treated as some sort of ethnicity (or "nationality" in early contemporary terms)
I'm not sure that's true outside of the typical Byzaboo / Turkish rivalling. That being said, I think it's a gray area that Paradox should've avoided. In that an American Jew is different from a Polish Jew. They may share the Hebrew language, but they each knows a language the other doesn't. They likely eat different food, drive different cars, are exposed to different media, etc. The issue this creates is that it indirectly plays into the antisemitic idea that all Jews are part of some unified global order where they all stick together against everyone else across borders. That the "final solution" is to break their faith.
It ultimately just goes back to the issue that your culture is informed by your religion and your religion is informed by the culture. To try and separate them is the problem here.
@pricel141l But still, from what we know from historical studies, people almost never separated their culture from religion because religion was the basement of their cultural routine.
So in our case, culture is more a game mechanic
@@pricel141l I mean, even in Victoria 3 every culture has a heritage trait which is quite literally and blatantly just their race.
Yeah weird how they don't marry outside of their group but the vast majority of Jews support foreign peoples entering en mass into white countries...
The Whole starvation part is quite scary Ludi
You sure its not one of your Roman or German ancestors speaking through you ?
Since when does Ludia have german ancestors?
Don't panic. Replacing the population general western european vibe.
2:56 casually explaining ethnic cleansing😂
12:51 Sorry Ludi but you're wrong about that part. What you are defining here is *nationality*, which comes from *natio*, birth. Nationality is something that is for sure determined on birth. But Culture is something a lot more viscous and transcendent. Jewish diasporic cultures existed for a long time in Europe during EU5's time period, so the new ethno-religious attempt by paradox makes sense. In Spain or Portugal for example, you'll probably have events regarding the force-conversion of the jews, which will probably convert a significant part of them into 'Cristão-Novos' or 'Conversos' they'll have the catholic religion, but a diasporic jewish culture (i imagine). It'll be interesting because likely you'll have to navigate some political controversies if you want the Conversos to truly assimilate, as their descendants were considered to be 'lesser christians' and were often discriminated in legal or political discourse (that is, if Paradox wants to represent how this rather important iberian controversy).
So glad to hear eu5 armies wont be like victoria 3
Yeah that one feature made me completely refuse to buy Vic3.
Alas my PC cannot fit EU5 by the looks of this.
a few things on assimilation:
- I don''t think if someone is born into a culture that that can be called assimilation. I think this is more about someone has a culture and later that changes.
- Assimilation is a two way street, if the people of the dominant culture don't want certain people to assimilate than they can make assimilation very hard for them with: segregation and discrimination.
- Culture is a lot of the time influenced by religion, so if your religion says something is good or bad than your culture will probably say the same thing. This also makes it so that if your religion says something is bad and the dominant culture says it's good you would be less or not willing to assimilate.
I don't know the best way to represent this in the game. Maybe somethings like laws and how similar cultures are.
yes but absolute blocks arent good We will get some looks into the 1st and 2nd points in Vic3 1.8 which might later be implemented in eu5 after further polishing
Oppressive and discriminatory policies lead to assimilation
A prominent example of culture and religion disagreeing:
European rulers were culturally expected to be ready to kill when fighting with their armies , but it made them sinful as Christians. They tried to make up for it with gifts to monasteries and having people pray for their souls, and it's also the reason why crusading (killing actually encouraged by the church) became popular.
For instance, Muslims, Jews and Christians never assimilated entirely in the Iberian Peninsula even after 700 years because of the heavy pork consumption by Christians, liturgical languages building diferenciators and unmatching liturgical calendars and festivities.
We here in Denmark actually lost a war because Sweden invaded over the frozen Oresund.
The winter 1657-1658 was very hard, so Oresund froze, and the swedes simply walked over and lay siege on Copenhagen.
Leading to us losing the war.
It mean that we actually, to this day, have a law saying Danes is allow to grab sticks and hit any Swedes, millitary or not, walking over the ice if Oresund ever freeze again.
Gotta love the global warming 😂
“Starving a province and then moving your own people in” wait is this what the Irish potato famine was all about?
thanks for genocide guide ludi
Romanian Jew who happen to be an Atheist married to Japanesee woman and obssesed with Byzantine and German world donination.
I love this. You are walking example of why multiculturalism done right is something amazing.
really liked your common sense description for assimilation/conversion into culture and religion, something too many dont't understand
Sweden moment this is called
"Pulling a Sweden"
They should match the mild/normal/severe winters to time periods as well. More of Europe would have "severe" winter during the mini ice age than in the medieval warm period.
My thoughts exactly! It could even be an option to be toggled off, to make for some interesting "alt history"
Now to cannon the frozen lake they're on 😏
Sweden attacking Finland on sleighs like a bunch of angry Santa Clauses is a thing.
Also, when this hits Steam I am going to need to take 2 years off of work to play.
Hey Ludi. Fun fact. The freezing of lakes and straits is a nod to how Sweden won Scania from Denmark. The event is called the march across the belt where the belts froze over so the entire Swedish army (who was stuck in Germany) could march across the danish mainland and over the frozen belts to reach Copenhagen.
In more modern times, crossing frozen seas was how the Siege of Stalingrad (or maybe it was another Soviet city) was broken.
So it's not only famous but also just makes sense.
Hi Ludi, I have a suggestion and I hope you address it in your next video. If we already have the opportunity to build trade buildings in other countries then they might as well add a currency mechanic. Because we know that currencies played a big role back then and still do, for example in the German region back then, this was a big obstacle to German unification/centralization because almost every small German state had its own currency. It would also be a lot more fun if you could use the currency to gain influence in other countries or if you could strengthen your currency through a strong military like some countries do in our time.....
or through high production of goods .That would give the industrialization and the game in general more flavor.
Love to see a gaming company throw in so many details and in-depth gameplay into their creation. We have been lacking such marvels for at least 10 years of MOBA and ARENA over-saturated market.
Hell, if detail and care are principles of Paradox, they'd probably be more successful in creating movies than 95% of Hollywood.
Movie DLC's when? (Is that what shorts are? movie DLC?)
I can only imagine if a game like War Thunder, which did not start out like a MOBA but gradually trended in that direction, was rebuilt with this kind of logic.
But oh well, some games will only truly see their potential when they close official servers and get rebooted on private ones.
I am so grateful that EU series is not the awful F2P business model.
Please make the guide for Victoria 3 for Great Britain 🇬🇧 🙏
Wait after playing eu4 for a decade, and waiting for eu5 for years, I tune out of dev diary's and eu4 news for a few months and eu5 has actually been announced??? I thought that was just a dream.
2:59 I think a shortcoming of this system is that, reality is no food was produced in winter in agricultural soceities.
Reality ~~ 0% food production in winter, 25% food production in spring/summer, 200% food production in fall.
The future "Song of fire and Ice"/ Game of Thrones mod will go insane with the winter mechanic
i have never been this early for a video in my life only 47seconds
Russian forces once during one of russo-swedish wars in 1809 crossed Gulf of Bothnia from Finland on ice and suddenly appeared in Stockholm suburbs. Swedes are no strangers to such tactical feats.
If sea zones can freeze and make the ships in them ice bound and stuck in place and armies can walk on frozen sea zones does that mean we can now capture/burn down enemy fleets that were unfortunate enough to get stuck close to our shore and armies?
Great video as always!!
This is a big change. Finally, soldiers can witness weather change.
Amish ? They are from the US but are pretty much a separate nation based on their religion. Also orthodox jews are more defined by their religion than the place where they were born. Example of this is how many Jewish people came to Izreal when it gained independence no matter where they were born.
I think having separate cultural and religious identities already had a good track record of representing local culture while distinguishing some groups inside these localities that would share some extra details in their way of living, but we would all agree that the games since now have always gave precendence to this first culture, while religious unity was always more of a second characteristic of your populations.
I think this change is probably an attempt on subverting this order, picking some religious identities that have precendence over cultural ones, but I don't like how absolute it has become as well, it should probably be revised a bit, but I think it's an interesting exploration of a new way of representing behaviour and groups in your population.
EUV developers: ppl will starve
Ludi: OMG love that
The time period of EU makes sense on the assimilation/conversion. The concept of belonging to a Nation's culture did not arise until Nationalism with Napoleon and took off in the 1800s which is Victoria. Before this people identified with their religion, family, village/town, job they did, and being subject of King Somebody
Paradox in Hoi4: No we cant add food that could be used for warcrimes
Paradox in EU4: haha genocide goes brrr
Ludi already planning those stackenwipen 🤣
that sounds amazing, im glad they finally are adding something new
Ludi reads that people can starve in the game.
Ludi's first thought:
Ooooh, I'm going to do Holodomor.
On his own country of birth, mind
I mean, he did say he was Jewish
Does that mean artillery can target a frozen lake “Its a trap!!!”
Yeah there was hardly any food *production* during winters but winters were not usually a season of famine because it followed the harvest so typically there would have been food stockpiled during winters = food available for soldiers to steal. You were more likely to run out of food in the spring or summer when stockpiles were running low. Armies should be taking more food attrition during spring and summer than during winter.
If the little ice age event happens in this game then it’ll be hella fun
I guess one question re ethno-religions is what does it mean to be part of an EU5 cultural group/assimilated? Is your assimilation determined by your own cultural practices or by the larger majority’s acceptance of you as part of that culture?
Because if it is determined by the latter, then the dynamic described in the Dev Diary is pretty close what existed during the period depicted in EU5. Like if a Jewish person wanted to remain a practicing Jew but also attend university, hold employment as a state official, own/farm land, be a lawyer, participate in certain aspects of cultural life - this was essentially impossible during this period. This is why the German Jewish poet Heinrich Heine, after converting to Protestantism in 1825, described his baptismal certificate as “the admission ticket to European civilization.”
So, I think this really depends on what assimilation means. If it means being able to exercise the privileges and prerogatives of a first-class citizen and to be seen as part of a group (in practice there was still discrimination even when persons did convert but it was basically necessary but often not sufficient for societal acceptance) then I think this accurately describes the dynamic that existed during the period.
5:31 Alexander Nevsky would be proud of you
This will take the warcrimes to a new level in paradox games
I think the religious culture thing is more a balance choice so that certain cultures don't immediately disappear into the broader culture. Sure if you really make a project out of erasing a group you can do it still, but if it's not actively being pursued by the player those cultures will persist a bit into the game.
its crazy that there is this much content and unique mechanics in the game before the game is even finished
I'm here for eu5. I support it.
I just wanna say the level of complexity and strategy required to play has me worried that it just might be *tooo* much. I'm especially worried about the potential of bugs absolutely devastating the game with the amount of features and content being presented and how everything is so interdependent.
I have nothing to base that worry on from any of the dev diaries, only from looking at past experiences with some eu4 updates. This game being SO in depth (unless there's a lot of automation), seems like an obstacle rather than a benefit.
Speaking of frozen sea tactics, there was a battle that is actually called 'Battle on the Ice' near Novgorod that is an important part of the local history. The guy who won it is considered a saint because of that by the Eastern Orthodoxy.
The EU5 mechanic is slightly different though: what happened in the 'Battle on the Ice' is basically why it is not a good idea for a heavy armoured knight to go on ice :-) I guess in EU5 it will be regardless of a unit type.
3:00 ok Stalin Ludi :')
I think your last point about ethno religions is a pretty modern view. Religon and culture were pretty hard to seperate.
There should also be weight limits, ie maximum force limit on a sea tile. If they exceed the weight, there should be extra attrition effects due to ice cracking. Could be a way to get people to really think hard about trying to ambush over the winter.
Surely culture in 1300s - 1400s isn't based on what country you're living in as the concept of a country (nationalism/idea of a nation state) does not exist. So Jewish people living in England wouldn't necessarily think of themselves as 'English' as that isn't in the psyche? And therefore identify with race/cultural group/religion more than migrants/minorities living in modern countries.
I love how you need liquor to colonise.
So it's time to give the Danes PTSD again. :'D
Miracle of Empel incoming. 😂
I have not seen the video yet but this already makes me very hyped for the alt-history mods where ice-ages and periods of global warming could shift the temperate zones around, causing pops to explode in africa or siberia. It shall be baller, lads.
There is some debate over that😂 12:40
What do you expect the Jew to say
Scandinavian tech level one : Ice fishing. Hoard Tech level 32 Horses on skis, take that Sweden.
Unfortunately the KI will never ever be able to keep up with all these features. there is no way that the KI will be an opponent ...
I've been mildly interested in EU5 until now. Never played EU4, so I have no basis for hype. But this update seems to have some really cool stuff. It's becoming more and more appealing.
I just hope it runs better than Vic3.
I come from an old culture where many religions coexisted (mostly) peacefully for millennia and the main bond between peoples of different religions was their shared national (or if you prefer, regional/geographical) culture. We had Jewish and Armenian neighbors and we all looked and behaved the same, played together, and attended each other's family parties . In fact, religion played a very insignificant role in people's cultural identity; a Muslim could dislike the Muslims inhabiting the neighboring city but be BBF with the Jew or Assyrian living next door. So, on this I'm with Ludi: this mechanic is BS.
Hearing all this makes me want the hourly ticks in CK now. Would make a lot more sense if weddings didn't take literal months
Maybe the unassimilatable pops are like Italian Americans. Culturally fully gringo since half a dozen generations but still calling themselves after whatever ethincity their great-great-great-great-grandfather had.
Reminder never to preorder
winter better be worth it to get a entire dev diary on it
I hope ai can take advantage of all these mechanics
Yeah just hope it is not to much of a nightmare to learn how to play, an eu4 with pop and demographic mechanic would have been enough for me.
The question is: Can you bait the British / English navy somwehere where thwere will be severe winter and than set over to England when ther navy gets stuck?
For culture-religion locking, a more conservative religion would be more likely to lock populations. Ludi you are to stuck in the thoughts of a modern society where culture conversion is so much easier than it was historically. I would almost argue that historically rural people would be more culturally locked to a localized religion than they would to a set of peoples. It is only after Urbanization of many areas that Culture truly became stronger than religion. As you move further away from centralized locations of an empire or trade centers, you move from cultural unity to religious unity. Many conquests historically would have involved some form of forced conversion as well though especially in Kingdoms with established State Religions.
I'm curious how you could accurately represent that though.
Would be interesting to see event series spawn around the conversion of the royal family to another religion and then that being forced upon a kingdom's people. That moment you send a request to the Pope for inquisitors (Cough Spain cough cough) and priests for religious unity in your kingdom or request assistance from a monastic order to put down some Heretic rebels.
EU5 looks dangerously amazing, as if many of those features are going to be broken or non-existant at the release -_-
Lets gather up some funny uses of ice in battles
Battle of Lake Peipus 1252
Novgorodians retreated out onto the lake baiting the Teutons to follow them to the open area where they could more easily bring their greater numbers anbd archers to bear against the more heavily armoured knights.
March Across the Belts 1658
Swedish army marches across the frozen seas from the Danish mailand to directly threaten Copenhagen.
Capture of the Dutch fleet at Den Helder 1795
French Hussars sieze the Dutch fleet which had gotten stuck in the ice during a cold winter. Not really a battle as the Dutch didn't resist at all and switched sides around the same time.
Battle of Austerlitz 1805
Famous but probably exsaggerated account of the French shooting the ice in a pond that the Russians were retreating across and hampering them by drowning their horses.
The first one would have to be a bonus to combat width while fighting on ice, the second one is the one Johan alluded to so that's probably what's in the game now, simply making ice passable, the third one would be a bit hard to do mechanically, the forth is just increasing attrition and travel delay I guess.
Map of Europe is reserved for the K.u.Ked armies !
wow, there are rivers now like in the mods
I think winter used to be the time for construction considering labor force was free from farming, I hope normal winter will give bonuses instead of malice's for construction speed
For a mild wintet it may be true. But I born and raised in Siberia, so I can tell you that it's really hard to build ANYTHING once snow falls.
12:30 I disagree here because your view is pretty much coinciding with the views of civic nationalism. It makes sense that Sephardic and Andalusi people, for example, blend into the general population after they were forced to convert to Christianity after a while now and they are converted to Catholicism.
Ah yes my favorite country - Horsemania
12:10 Judi et Historia 💀💀💀
it's not a secret anymore that ludi doesn't like from ck3. honestly, I'm really hyped over EU v
EU players be like:
hell yeah they're adding starvation mechanics :D
Pretty sure in imperator desert kill troops even tho they have food
You were curious for opinions on the last point about ethnic religions and you gave an example in the UK. I disagree with that example specifically and with your entire point in consequence. I believe that a kid raised in a muslim household in Britain is far more likely to adopt the culture of their immigrant parents than the native culture of Britain. Many sons of immigrants consider themselves to be nationals of their parent's land, not nationals of where they were born. It's why ghettos are formed. It's why Ius Sanguinis is the default method of naturalization worldwide. It's just a reality.
Ludi, about culture conversion. I guess you are losing the historical simulation part in your modern example. If you remember, there weren't "French", "English", etc, mainly before 19th century. But religion was a thing to unite the community
Anyway, thank you for the video!!
Is it me or might it be that Vic 2 will be more similar to eu5 rather than vic3?
3:35 but Ludi nooo sweden is not overpowered! says so right there in the achievements!
5:20 russians did it to attack estonia, crossed the lake in winter "Battle on the Ice"
Teutonic knights from Estonia attacked the Russians, no?
2min in and Ludi is already suggesting genocide (in a game).
4:14 Entire Russian playerbase probably wouldn't like it
12:46 ok but that was not the case back in these days.
It still isn't
