A horror-survival anime like this really brought my attention when I watched the first episode. Dawn of the Dead and Shaun of the Dead were the obvious references used in this show, but I dig that sort of theme which is not used very often in the Anime medium.

I had tried Highschool Of The Dead three years ago, but also marked it of as just another ecchi anime. While looking for a new anime last September, I finally decided to give this show another try. Now, it's #16 on my anime list. Since there isn't a lot of zombie anime out there, this was a great experience for me. The only thing that dragged it down was that god forsaken fan service.

I loved this anime. Each character had real depth to themselves which you saw affect them in various parts in the story. Yes, you are right, action needs to be driven by motivation instead of shoot-dis-guy-hee-gotz-ma-gurlz. Also, I initially dismissed it when I couldn't find a dub, but years later I really enjoyed it. Thanks for your review. I have read the manga up to a point, but I am sad that there is no progress as of yet on a continuation or at least an anime. Well maybe it's like Naruto-syndrome/Half-Life-3 Syndrome.
I noticed that the male characters had fair character development, because they aren't just props for fanservice, while the female characters did not. The weakness of the show for me is just that the female characters really don't have any independent reason to be there.
i agree. it keeps my attention on the pictures rather than trying to read the subtitles. i love how they made the zombie blind and numb. it was really something different.

i have a question. you often state that a good character is something you can relate to easily. however then there are characters that you cant really connect with, but are really cool, so they make a good character? confusion ensues.
I loved HSOTD but others I watch anime with hated it with a passion just because of the fan service. I can't wait for season 2 to come out! It will be out in the next year or so. :o I've heard bad things about that anime BUT I loved Code Geass and FMA (Which both I found from you) And for years Werewolves have been the most interesting mythical creature to me by far. Do you think i'd enjoy it or could you reccomend another anime that you'de think would be better for someone who likes the Code geass genre.
I'm sure season 2 has been confirmed :/. Oh and loved this. I agree with all of it except from 2 ... ish. Arisu/Alice. Your right she doesn't have much prescence in the series but you cannot dismiss her intro, that had me in tears. And Saya. Yes she may have her stupid ego boasting moments but in the second half it was kind of different, getting involved in the harem slightly and having her back story thrown in. And it was actually her own scene at end of the series that officaly sold me. :')
I agree with most of the things you said, but I don't have to agree with you entirely. I still loved the anime a lot. I was captivated, yet confused because I was constantly distracted by the fan service, but that didn't hinder my ability to analyze it too much. When it comes to the fan service, I have seen too many animes that have hinged their popularity based on it, but this is not hinging solely on the fan service, and I loved it. :).

The nurses is Shizuka Marikawa. And she serves some purpose in at least her having a bad ass cop friend who is presumably on her way into the city to meet up with the group at some point. I guess that could make her slightly useful somehow? And honestly unless the manga starts up again I don't really see a second season ever happening. There's just not enough material left after season 1 to make a season 2 which sucks because Asami was an awesome character.
If you pay close attention to what the school nurse says, she is friends or whatever with Rika and Rika is badass to the max and I hope she turns up more in season 2 when comes out soon
This is one of those anime I tried watching several times before I finally managed to watch past the first scene. And man was I surprised it how good it was. Yes, there is a tiny bit too much fan service, though I have seen worse, but as you said, if you manage to look past it you might get enthralled.
Oh believe me this show may have a lot of fanservice but believe me highschool dxd's and queens blade's amounts of fanservice make highschool of the dead look like fullmetal alchemist
TBTH, When I watched "High School of the Dead", I didn't see it as a Perverted Gore Fest. I saw it as a *Standard Action Movie*. Sort of like the Live-Action Transformers Movies
Good news ShadowACS, looks like the manga is finally getting updated again (I think the author got sick or something.) so it's possible we could expect a second season within a couple years depending on how much the author catches up.
I know a lot of fanservice and harem shows usually don't get more than a season or two, but in all honesty, this was one of the few of that genre that I really wanted to see a continuation of the story. Cuz come on... It's a show about the zombie apocalypse! FTW!!
The nurses name is something along the lines Shizuka... and I can only remember that because through most of the show I wanted her to be quiet and to say "be quiet please" in Japanese is "shizukani shite kurusai" (not sure if the spacing is correct in that).
I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, and i'm not sure how accurate this is, But i heard that the author of H.O.T.D. passed away recently. So don't hold your breath for a second season, But try reading the manga. It went much further then the anime, though it'll remain incomplete as well. T.T
Honestly I think this was one of the more fairer reviews for this anime that I've seen. Most just out right hate it because of the unnecessary amount of fan service and judge the rest of what the show has to offer based on that predetermined opinion. The rest pretty much just gloss over how there is fan service in the show and just paint the show out to be near perfect. You actually took the time to go into all of this shows strong points while still not exaggerating its weak points one way or the other.

Agreed. I do think the theme of the potential loss of humanity or a call to primal need of killing is what for the audience to decide upon. When it comes to the voice work. I love both versions and the fact of wanting to make the screams match the situation is something I consider praiseworthy.
As far as I know, the show stopped because the Manga went on hiaitis, but I've heard rumors that the manga's going to continue sometime in this coming year, same with the anime, which might mean that they'll both be done along the same timeframe. Either way, I can't wait to see season 2, minus that one big flaw, this is probably one of the best anime I've seen in a long time, definitely has some of the best English voice acting.
I agree with you completely! The fan service doesn't overpower the drama and story, but it does come close. Some of the fan service shots are pretty cool, like Saeko on top of the hummer, but a LOT of them are pointless.

I ask this because I thought it would have had at least one reference in the top two saddest anime moments^^; A less mainstream one to check out that's pretty cool would be Oda Nobuna no Yabou. It has it's downsides, but I thought the initial situation was very intriguing. Check it out^^
I heard in the web sight animefushigi it said that there will be a second season of Highschool of the Dead, but it doesn't have a date yet. I'll inform you if I hear anything.
It's like the Dead Rising Game series because 1. Zombie apocalypse 2. The characters think the military is going to save them 3. They want to escape the apocalypse

When season 2 rolls around this is going to be great. Otherwise it feels rather unfinished. I know I can read the manga, but at the pace that it's updated it's going to take a while until they can make a season 2 out of it. But overall I really enjoyed season 1.

I along with my 15 year old and 13 year old sister were able to ignore the fanservice when we first watched it together. We all loved and consider it as a sibling favorite along with soul eater and eden of the east :D
i was actually kindof pissed that they were still on hiatus for the manga but i just found out they started making them again this spring, this show could still have a chance to keep going but i wont get my hopes up just in case

Well, maybe. I always thought her name was Saiko because of how they pronounced it, but Saeko and Saiko sound very similar so it would be easy to get them confused without subtitles or a tuned ear to Japanese names.
When I first tried to watch High School Of The Dead I hated the fanservice and didn't bother watching it, but I was still new to anime back then, so I guess I'm gonna give it another try now!
when i first saw it i thought its a great anime and that i didnt see the fanservice to be a problem mostly because that (im not a pervert i think) it was romantic anime and im a romantic type of guy and because i was looking for ecchi and i got that and the ova ending says that a another season is coming but i don t know but really want that second season and if they do make a dub version i want all of the voice actors to come back they where really great and love their performance and the writers for making it fun

Is she the doctor? and if so she is pretty dull but at episode 6 i think she is pretty hysterical with that part of her kissing the boys, just the reactions and faces on them were funny enough. but i cant say much more since at this point i only just finished episode 6.
Tachagi (I think that's how you spell it) is my favorite out of the girl cast. Everyone hates her. I know she boasts and acts rudely toward the characters but I find her funny and a good character. When she has her moments they're damn good moments. My favorite though is Khota.
Well highschool of the dead is the first anime who learnt me to not watch the center of the image cause there is a good plot in the periphery. I liked this one.
I might watch it, but I really hate it when a show has such good storyline and then you're hooked BUT it has one season and ends on a flipping cliffhanger!
When people say "without the fanservice..." I get so annoyed. If some fan-service is going to ruin an anime for you then fine. But you have no right to complain. That's like complaining at an Italian restaurant for putting parm cheese on your chicken instead of blue. You came to an Italian restaurant and you expected it to not have parm cheese, but blue? You can't go to an echi anime and complain there is fanservice. It's guns, boobs, and zombies. That's what it is. Beggars can't be choosers.
You should totally check out Welcome to the NHK. For me it is one of my favorate anime next to Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist and Code geass. The reason why I like it the most is because i can completely relate it to my own life.
Well I do love the anime, my only real problem is the OVA that was recently released. I DO NOT recommend watching it unless it leads into the 2nd season, which looks like it may be a go, unless you want to lose any and all forms of respect you have for the series.
I know that there is a lot of fanservice in HOTD but the sexual jokes some of them would be you just joking with your friends. When i hang with my friends mixed or just me and a girl i say alot of sexual thing. Like after I was in a car crash were me and my friend should be died. I said to her "I hope that the nurses look like you." It helps lighten the mode and you can think better. Not all the jokes but some of them.

This is a huge guilty pleasure, I normally hate the overuse of fanservice, and constant cursing....but the characters and pacing are awesome.

I heard in the web sight animefushigi it said that there will be a second season of Highschool of the Dead, but it doesn't have a date yet. I'll inform you if I hear anything.
It's like the Dead Rising Game series because
1. Zombie apocalypse
2. The characters think the military is going to save them
3. They want to escape the apocalypse
You could say that about EVERY zombie story......

When season 2 rolls around this is going to be great. Otherwise it feels rather unfinished. I know I can read the manga, but at the pace that it's updated it's going to take a while until they can make a season 2 out of it.
But overall I really enjoyed season 1.
easily a top 10 of mine.. really wish a season 2 would have come out. Even if it flopped in Japan produce and release it here in the U.S. I have no doubt this would kill it on Netflix or something
Saiko does the whole "Badass cool" character thing way better than Kazuma from Kaze No Stigma. Saiko isn't a dick about being cool.
I don't remember Kazuma acting like a dick, and if he did. He sure as hell could back it up, but you're right Saiko is an awesome character.

I along with my 15 year old and 13 year old sister were able to ignore the fanservice when we first watched it together. We all loved and consider it as a sibling favorite along with soul eater and eden of the east :D
I felt the same. It was really weird how she kept doing that, even if it was because of the zombie apocalypse going on.

i was actually kindof pissed that they were still on hiatus for the manga but i just found out they started making them again this spring, this show could still have a chance to keep going but i wont get my hopes up just in case
I dropped the anime on episode 5 because of the fanservice. But i'll probably give it another try in the future, but right now I'm staying far away from it.
You should watch Brigadoon. But it might be hard to find for I haven't seen it in awhile and an Irish play has the same title. (that's about all it has in common.)
Oh, and the manga goes on hiatus like every 2 chapters for like 3 months. That's one of the reasons for no second season.

Well, maybe. I always thought her name was Saiko because of how they pronounced it, but Saeko and Saiko sound very similar so it would be easy to get them confused without subtitles or a tuned ear to Japanese names.
When I first tried to watch High School Of The Dead I hated the fanservice and didn't bother watching it, but I was still new to anime back then, so I guess I'm gonna give it another try now!
when i first saw it i thought its a great anime and that i didnt see the fanservice to be a problem mostly because that (im not a pervert i think) it was romantic anime and im a romantic type of guy and because i was looking for ecchi and i got that and the ova ending says that a another season is coming but i don t know but really want that second season and if they do make a dub version i want all of the voice actors to come back they where really great and love their performance and the writers for making it fun

Have you watched Ghost hunt? Maybe you didn't like it so that's why you haven't mentioned it in any of your video's but since it's not a very famous anime, I kinda thought that you haven't... But if you have time maybe you would give it a try? I mean I think it's a awesome anime, but I guess that's only my opinion... I guess i'm really bad at judging characters, and anime but I really think you should give it a try!:D
Is she the doctor? and if so she is pretty dull but at episode 6 i think she is pretty hysterical with that part of her kissing the boys, just the reactions and faces on them were funny enough. but i cant say much more since at this point i only just finished episode 6.
Tachagi (I think that's how you spell it) is my favorite out of the girl cast. Everyone hates her. I know she boasts and acts rudely toward the characters but I find her funny and a good character. When she has her moments they're damn good moments. My favorite though is Khota.
Well highschool of the dead is the first anime who learnt me to not watch the center of the image cause there is a good plot in the periphery. I liked this one.

I might watch it, but I really hate it when a show has such good storyline and then you're hooked BUT it has one season and ends on a flipping cliffhanger!

When people say "without the fanservice..." I get so annoyed. If some fan-service is going to ruin an anime for you then fine. But you have no right to complain. That's like complaining at an Italian restaurant for putting parm cheese on your chicken instead of blue.

You can't go to an echi anime and complain there is fanservice.

You should totally check out Welcome to the NHK. For me it is one of my favorate anime next to Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist and Code geass. The reason why I like it the most is because i can completely relate it to my own life.
Well I do love the anime, my only real problem is the OVA that was recently released. I DO NOT recommend watching it unless it leads into the 2nd season, which looks like it may be a go, unless you want to lose any and all forms of respect you have for the series.

I know that there is a lot of fanservice in HOTD but the sexual jokes some of them would be you just joking with your friends. When i hang with my friends mixed or just me and a girl i say alot of sexual thing. Like after I was in a car crash were me and my friend should be died. I said to her "I hope that the nurses look like you." It helps lighten the mode and you can think better. Not all the jokes but some of them.
