I never understood the food change thing in localization. Its food, a universal thing we can all relate to, so why the need to change what they are? The whole "American children wouldn't understand what a rice ball is because rice balls aren't as common in America as they are in Japan" thing is such a stupid concept to me, because I doubt a child would hear "rice ball" and be like "what is a rice ball? I don't understand. I hate this show now cuz I don't know what a rice ball is." No, they'd hear rice ball either before or after they see a character eat it and would IMMEADIETLY know it's a type of food, just because the kid has never tried one doesn't mean anything, if anything it would make the child curious and want to try it because they see the character eat it and see how much they enjoy it. Kinda like the concept of when a kid sees a commercial for a toy and the kids in the commercial are having fun, so the kid wants to have that fun too.

I think the reason this is so widespread is because it *started* during an extremely xenophobic part of American history. It’s less “children won’t understand and they’ll hate it” and more “we can’t have our CHILDREN becoming more interested in JAPANESE culture than OURS,” and it’s…not great, but it stuck around as just “we do this because it’s what we do” for a long time after that period wore off.
Hence the famous Pokémon “These jelly doughnuts are delicious!”

that and there isnt a reason to think kids never ate or had of any kind of rice before. so the name would just be literal to kids even if they might wonder why they are triangles and not round. its like you said there is no justifiable reason for the change it wont make them hate it. really kids wouldnt care about it a passing thought at most.

It's definitely got its rough moments, but I really think that there's more pros than cons.
Double Souls, several great boss designs like Laserman, Burnerman.EXE, and Videoman, not to mention the Boktai Crossover, and one thing the other games lacked: New Game Plus. One thing I don't like about so many RPGs is that if you wanna start over, you start ALL over. BN4, you can replay the story as much as you want and keep all your goodies. It wasn't perfect, because missing some chips will put you behind in PA Memo completion, and of course the localization was atrocious, but still, BN4 gets way, WAY too much hate.

Something to point out, Legends and Battle Network absolutely do not take place in the same universe. There's two main timelines in the Megaman franchise, you could say this is the "good" and "bad" timelines. With one timeline ending with the destruction of humanity, and another with humanity prospering. The "bad" timeline goes as so: Classic Megaman -> Megaman X -> Fairy Wars -> Megaman Zero -> Megaman ZX -> Megaman Legends. The "good" timeline is Megaman Battle Network and Megaman Star Force.

Even the diverging timeline theory could be wrong too. Since beyond the implication the evil energy in both series are one and the same, and there being a Doctor Wily and Doctor Light, there is not much tying the two timelines. They could be related obviously but the divergence is by no means Light choosing to be a programmer instead of a roboticist.

The megaman classic onward storyline is derived from the belief in the 80s that robots and the like would become the dominant technology in the world. The battle network and starforce storyline is based on the internet and communications becoming the dominant technology in reality.

52:37 Honestly it's actually amazing how hard 4kids went with censoring Barrel Dragon (mind, this redesign was actually Upper Deck's doing, a lot of cards got censored (or given dumb and sometimes horribly inconsistent renames like with Diamond Dragon being renamed Hyozanryu for some reason, even though Sapphire and Emerald were named Luster Dragon and Luster Dragon #2 respectively) before they hit the anime). I mean, they could have just made it laser shooting and called it a day but nope, they went _all out_ with the glowy special effects.

I have an idea about those 3D models that are in Starforce. The developers may have toyed with the idea of making Starforce completely 3D. Then they made models of some things from Battle Network to see if it would work. For whatever reason it didn't and they went with the classic 2D overhead.

On the Duel Masters crossover: from what I know, Duel Masters is still very popular and very much played in Japan, even though it died completely everywhere else in the world, and it has a large number of other crossovers with other franchises.
As I play a lot of Magic the Gathering, I know there are actually a rather large number of Duel Masters versions of MtG characters and cards, and there has even been an (illegal to play) Duel Masters card made in MtG named Nira, Hellkite Duelist (I say illegal to play because it was a one-of-a-kind promotional card made specifically as an employee reward and given to that one employee, known as a "Heroes of the Realm" card, with a different card back)

Personal headcanon: Synchro Chips are made of biometal (or this universe’s equivalent) to allow for cross fusion, since the chips have a similar design on it to unrefined Model W pieces, and cross fusion is very similar to R.O.C.K On/ Megamerging, requiring a special synergy to utilize it, with Biometals requiring a biolink to a user.

    • @Xeno-The-Wanderer
      @Xeno-The-Wanderer 2 года назад +5

I know this is a headcanon but I’ll put in my thoughts on this compared to canon. Model W is made from pieces of Ragnarok fused with Dr Weil’s data since his brain was digitized so he wouldn’t forget his crimes which was later modified by Master Albert and spread around the world to absorb anguish and suffering caused by maverick raids and suffering while Biometals are reverse engineered from this thus have the same drawback of needing a user who could use model W thus the users have the capacity to be malicious or benevolent. Synchro chips as far as we know are not made from the spirit of a person infused in metal… however with the netnavis being there we have a person to fuse their abilities with. The differences between the 2 are that there’s no biological data needs for the Synchro chip users and Biometals don’t need a dimensional area.
I personally had a headcanon once upon a time that the amount of technology fused with nature formed a sort of permeated dimensional area around the world to allow Biometals to work but that’s just an old headcanon

18:11 - Side note, Bass XX is actually canon to 4.5. Just retroactively. In the Rockman EXE 15th Arrange (aka, a greatest hits of Battle Network remixes to celebrate the franchise’s fifteenth year) there’s a medley of the three boss themes in 4.5: Real Operation, the songs are bridged by an announcer narrating over an ongoing Net Battle tourney (presumably the Under Tournament from the post-game for reasons that will be soon apparent). Most prominently, the announcer declares that the finals opponent is Bass XX. No ambiguity, name dropped the XX and everything.

one piece of trivia i can say is that possibly, Gow was originally intended to appear in Battle Network 1, since his art was shown in japanese magazines, but unlike the other characters, his name was listed as "? ? ? ?". presumably just saying his name would have been spoileriffic in nature, though i kind of wonder if his original name was supposed to be Rush?
I have a source of the image. also SPOILERS for battle network 1+
i could honestly see them digging out any old remnants of BN's plots that never got used before 4, since that game was arguably made when the BN story as a whole were resolved after 3, maybe they'd use what was left for 5/6?.
i'd only say that his name would be Rush, since revealing a Dog to be robotic or cloned memories from a real dog placed inside a mobile machine would be more of a progressive reveal of Megaman actually being Hub be far more believable, instead of being a unexpected info dump near the end of 1. it'd certainly be more believable that an animal's mind would be more comprehensible than a Human's, which give Yuichiro the idea to turn Hub into a netnavi. Dr Wily even had chairs to send human minds into the internet, so it doesn't seem that far of a stretch, might even make more sense since Bass is chronologically as old as Alpha, possibly when Tadashi was still alive. (since he'd have to implant the room inside Alpha's coding).
also, unless the names were directly mentioned within the context of the games, technically Rush (the Mole-like virus) technically got named in Battle Network 2? (as that was when enemy names were displayed, during chip selection). unsure if his design originally being scrapped from Legends 2 was common knowledge, or if it was only stated as such when the Mega Man Battle Network Complete Works book came out.

And a bit of a fun pre-emptive fact: the Crossover content in Boktai 2 is where arguably the most powerful armor comes from. The Protoman armor increased attack speed by a relatively absurd degree and it's only real competition was the armor that prevented weapon durability from dropping. Since dodging attacks to avoid hitstun is normal, it usually comes down to convenience vs speed.

This was a real joy to watch and I'm really looking forwards to the next parts. One thing that I was hoping to potentially see on here that might get answered would be how Bass knows Zero. In Network Transmission with Bass dialog he calls Megaman a scum for defeating Zero. It made me wonder if Bass and Zero had some sort of rivalry against each other off screen. I always just assumed they met before, fought and it ended in a draw between the two, or maybe they had some sort of respect for each other? When I read Bass dialog from that scene I felt it was directed at Megaman as some sort of hatred for defeating Zero. I think I might've been looking into it to deep. Regardless of that, keep up the great work, I'm learning bits and pieces I didn't know about the series.

You are correct. I didn't even realize that until now. You are also the first to point it out. Not sure how that happened. I have the image files for Heatman, so I'm not sure why I showed Toadman. Maybe because Toadman is in Battle Network 2?

about the server growing, in BN2, I'll go and call upon retroactive compatibility of concept, or more immediatelly, it was an early version of Straforce's Noise
the strong radiation of the original server causing a cascade of Noise, which progressivelly accelerated and created more and more servers to be slowly "copy&pasted" as the system required more and more energy to create the copy of bass (and as a side effect, created the portal in the cyberworld that spawned navis and once offscreen bass copies)

The same scene also had a navi resembling a RX-75 Guntank from Mobile Suit Gundam. Couldn't make this stuff up if I tried.

I think this have nothing to do with manga or comics but instead it depends on the writer
If you are saying this because of the megaman Archie comics that's because the mad lad Ian flyn is an expert on megaman lore and a fantastic writer

    • @FlashingBladesProductions
      @FlashingBladesProductions  2 года назад

Funny you mention that about "fleshing out". Ryo Takamisaki DID mention in an interview that at least once or twice, he had to change his script or write a new ending to a chapter because Capcom had revealed the plot of the next game, so he had to connect them somehow, like how Megaman gaining Gregar's power kinda comes out of nowhere at the end of the fight with Nebula Grey.

Gonna be commenting as I watch. This time around, I’m just bummed we didn’t get much coverage on Battle Story for the Gospel entry. After a big opening attack pulled by AirMan, CutMan, and QuickMan that involved putting Mayl through a deadly gas leak (in lieu of Yai for once), the actually important members of the net mafia went about posing as friendly good samaritans by getting on the good side of Lan and friends as well as being very crucial to helping stop the schemes of a returning (and stronger than ever) WWW/World Three.
As for the Gospel supervirus, it had three encounters with MegaMan where it grew stronger and more adaptable with each subsequent bout before finally perishing in the latter skirmish. In the first encounter, it went on a city rampage but was quickly driven off by the teamwork of MegaMan, GutsMan, Roll, and Glyde. In the second battle, it is aided by MagnetMan and KnightMan against MegaMan and ProtoMan as they run an attack on SciLab (I think…) as Gauss and Pride play their hand and out themselves as bad guys. Pride and KnightMan’s ultimate hesitation to serve the Gospel syndicate’s ends respectively earn them a swift backhand and swift deletion however, which enraged Lan and MegaMan enough to rapidly overwhelm the supervirus with HeatGuts Style. Unfortunately, the desperate efforts of Gauss and MagnetMan stall MegaMan and ProtoMan out, enabling Gospel to evolve into a stronger second form and get away. Gospel is dealt with for good when it launches another attack on SciLab, now demonstrating the abilities to mass produce copies of the Gospel syndicate’s Navis and rapidly corrupt its immediate surroundings. Gospel immediately proves too much for HeatGuts MegaMan (which mopped the floor with its initial form previously) while ProtoMan has to tear through the mass produced Navis on his own. The tide turns when MegaMan achieves the even stronger ElecTeam Style and ProtoMan gets a helping hand from ShadowMan in the final stretch of the endless clone fighting.
Well, that’s the best summary I can give without any Japanese fluency. There’s also the matter of Bass GS, who in this canon is a malicious parasite who lingered within Bass until it assimilated all of his power without detection, pulled a chest-burst routine to escape Bass’ body in his image, and then served as Wily’s top enforcer (sans the also present Alpha) for the Battle Network 3 leg of the manga’s plot. Again, I can’t really tell if Bass GS has any actual affiliation with Gospel like in the games without Japanese fluency but I figured I should bring him up while I was at it.

43:57 Uh not just FireMan and PharaohMan... Aside from GutsMan, ProtoMan and Bass who didn't have their own stages, _all_ the boss navis with classic counterparts got remixes of their stage themes in Network Transmission, though how close they are to the originals seems to vary at times like with for example ElecMan and GravityMan having stage themes that sound more like homages than remixes. They even remixed the Zero Virus Stage 1-3 theme from X5.

50:53 It seems like references to angels and heaven are okay but demons and hell are not. Like in Gravity Falls when Soos' grandmother tells Soos that his grandfather is not in heaven, with a tone of voice that implied he's in hell instead "No... He is not there". Think it's worth noting that most of the demon digimon have their names abbreviated but both Lilithmon and Baalmon had their names censored in the English dub of Xros Wars, Digimon Fusion. The name of Baalmon's reformatted form, Beelzemon remained uncensored as was the case with the one in Tamers.
Course Digimon Fusion also had a lot of other changes of questionable quality. Not least of which was blue laser-shooting Dephutymon as opposed to the one from Adventure and Adventure 02 who went entirely uncensored and this is also dumb because him dropping some of his ammo was actually a plot point. There's also a few poorly localized name changes that ignored the official Bandai localizations (including Lilithmon herself) such as Bastemon to Beastemon instead of Persiamon, the names of Lucemon's Mode Changes being Wild 1st/2nd Mode instead of Chaos Mode (Falldown Mode) and Shadowlord Mode (Satan Mode) and... SlushAngemon... Instead of GuardiAngemon... *_SLUSHAGEMON! IT IS LITERALLY MADE OF SWORDS! SURRASHU WAS CLEARLY SLASH, NOT SLUSH!_*

I have a small theory on "sealed off his moves".
In the anime "Ruroni Kenshin" (Samurai X), the MC breaks the thumbs of an abusive kendo teacher so he can no longer hold a sword and force him to practice a more passive way of fighting.
With mr famous using kendo, maybe he did that, broke off the guy thumbs
