If a had a nickel for every time a circle with an off centred smiley face was in a game's code but unused, becoming an extremely obscure fact for said franchise's fandom and being the poster boy for a final iceberg layer.
I'd have two nickels.
Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice right?
I am referring to Big Bob from Undertale for those those don't know.
Curse you Marxiplier the Platypus!
Didn’t expect to see a Phineas and Ferb reference here.
@@polocatfan wait which is the other one?

you're definitely correct in that "pianissimo" translates to "very soft," but that's not the racer's name; that would be pianTissimo with an additional T. i'd assume this translates to "very pianta," as if he's trying to convince you that he's DEFINITELY a pianta and not an impostor
I won't make an Among Us joke, I won't make an Among Us joke
Suspicious activity in your comment thread 😳😳😳

Since everybody here is being a chicken I am going to say it
*When the imposter is sus* 😳
There now y'all can suffer ;)
Honestly I’ve always thought the purple rabbits were just earlier versions of Wario’s rabbits, due to the fact that his overalls are purple.
Waluigi
I mean, to be fair, it is confirmed waluigi was considered for the game
@@wolfetteplays8894 Where have you heard this? I've never heard that Waluigi was actually considered for DS.
@@Thoomas2001 i think this is bull, the beta name for SM64DS was Super Mario Times 4.

Fun fact about about the Infinite 1-Ups with Shells entry. If you attempt the trick on Super Paper Mario, you actually lose points after reaching 5000, in which the Koopa just dies after you've lost more than you gained. This was so people could not cheat an already easy game.
It's not just that, paper Mario games are constantly self ironic towards the Mario series in general and i also love them for that
@@repentofyoursinsandbelieve629 i think you're on the wrong comment bro

1:01:08 The orange 'S' Mario sounds like a reference to Sponge, the forgotten brother.
Also, have you heard of Spider Mario, Tall Mario and Pro Skater Mario? They were experimental power-ups from 3D land's development.
Spider Mario was scrapped because the spider's skittering animation was too creepy, Tall Mario was too tall to fit in the game screen and was meant as more of a joke and I've forgotten the details of pro skater mario... :(
If memory serves, I learnt this in an interview from the UK's Official Nintendo Magazine
Well you know what is said, orange is the loneliest color, even in the data of mario games
yeah
It’s funny. Tall Mario (rather, Weird Mario), is an unlockable power-up from Super Mario Maker.
I mean we had lanky Mario so they eventually did do the joke
Orange Mario from 3d World was in the game's files before Sponge was conceived in Vinesauce
the first time I encountered the autumn theme in super Mario world, I was playing it at my Gammy's house (My grandmother - loved video games and was a total badass) and I had NO idea what was going on since someone else had unlocked it. I love those childhood memories where you got totally threw by a beloved video game that you trusted.
That's awesome because the exact same thing happened to me when I was like 11. My brother, one cousin and me were playing smw on my grandpa's house during the afternoon, my brother best the special world and then this happened.
Jesus loves you
I remember reading Rosalina’s story as a kid, and I actually cried myself
So did I, the music also amplified the emotions quite effectively
I recall as a kid, like a young kid, somehow going into a hidden level on the bridge where the fish jumps (Super Mario World). It was likely just a dream, but I still think of it every so often.
The dolphin level?
@@llewgee7525 No, in the map screen, a fish jumps out of the water every time you walk over one of the bridges
Ngl, I think the line is actually “So long, eh-bowser!” I know Charles said it was “king bowser” but he recorded the lines years ago, so who knows?
I think his explanation was fake and I just think he forgot what he had said and thought that sounded similar.
Yeah, I think that it was just Mario's "Italian" accent
Files mark the line as "So Long Bowser" so he's probably saying "So long-a Bowser."
I mean with the UR MR GAY message, he might have said Gay Bowser
Probably not true, but one can dream right?
@@diamondmemer9754 I mean, I never said "so long gay bowser" wasnt funny
I think the Chicken Suit was to the fire flower as the penguin suit is to the ice flower. Giving you fire balls, and the ability to slide, even though it doesn't make much sense, the colors just make it seem that way to me.
Pr it could be like Luigi in sm64 DS where he can slightly flutter in the air
the happy face sprite makes me feel happy and uplifted, not uneasy or haunted. I genuinely love that sprite
he's all like :)
Fun fact: This sprite has become the logo of a website called The Cutting Room Floor. The site is dedicated to finding unused content in video games.
@@Bolt505 I love that website and I love that they used the happy face sprite as its favicon

It was cool to finally watch a director's cut version of this and see it in one go, plus getting to know the man behind the icebergs was great
im so glad you brought up the 2401 thing with Luigi being discovered 24 yrs & 1 month after the release of the game. its such an obscure but crazy fact
4:32
Just to clarify this part, Mario and Luigi play differently. Luigi is faster and jumps higher than Mario, but struggles with stopping still after running. Luigi was the better character but only in skilled hands.
Not in New Soup DS
Fuck man you really drew me in with Rosalina's backstory, I had forgotten it was so in-depth. I actually also forgot I was watching an iceberg video, it was so well presented.
Awh! thank you man
26:58 I am 100% sure he’s actually saying “so long-a bowser” with an Italian accent.
It was Charles Martinet who recently stated he’s saying “so long, King-a Bowser” - but, like Miyamoto so often does, I’m sure he just made this up because he actually couldn’t remember what he originally said (which would make sense, considering he recorded that line almost 30 years ago) and couldn’t bother trying to figure it out.
It just doesn’t sound remotely close to “King-a Bowser”.
I’m glad that the chicken suit never existed so I can get better sleep knowing that “cock mario” doesn’t exist
BROOOO XD
Chicken suit was supposed to be an advanced vet of the Fire Flower
In some other NES and GB games sometimes there's such smiley faces like in 1:08 as a placeholder multiple times to mark spots in the vram that are still open to receive actual graphics. Off hand I remember there's one in the megaman 3 tiles somewhere. Sometimes games do weird tiles like this as fillers.
Fun Fact: The unused smiley sprite in Mario 2 is used as the favicon of The Cutting Room Floor.
Yeah that's what I always know that smiley face for never really thought it was an unused Sprite in Mario 2
also in undertale in the true laboratory
@@chazzysworldofplaytime7914 that's the 1st thing I though of
Tcrf says a possibility for the orange mario was for some sort of Super Guide like in the New Soup games which honestly I'm a little surprised wasn't on the iceberg

56:38 That is untrue. You can infinite flutter up to them if you set up fruit storage to double your time as Yoshi.
yeah, but that still counts as a "cheat" technically

Pianissimo can mean a lot of things. Another meaning is very silent. And also the piano instrument is called pianoforte, and literally is softstrong, which resembles the soft and strong versions of the notes. Anyway great video!
Fun fact: Yellow and Blue Toad's official names are Ala-Gold and Bucken-Berry, respectively.
The last layer: CANON ZONE

now imagine that the 2 eyes are actually 1 cyclops eye, and the 2 white pixels in the middle are the pupil
and its looking right at you
This has some serious production value. Epic job
"Mario it that really you?" Is my favorite. Also did you know that in Japan Bowsers name in Bowsers Fury is God Killer Bowser
I’m pretty sure the God Killer Bowser name is fake. If I recall correctly Matt McMuscles of What Happun fame created the hoax.
Yeah is was google translate Japanese cause they did not speak japanese
god killer bowser sounds so badass though
@@VahlTV it does lol
I know right
I'm sure this has been brought up before, but there are a couple differences with Super Luigi Galaxy. Aside from Luigi playing different from Mario (one example being he doesn't stop on a dime but instead slides to a halt), the cosmic clone races are noticeably harder and the air meter underwater depletes faster when you spin (as opposed to it not affecting the normal drain rate as Mario)
I think that the happy face from Mario 2 was just a place holder sprite, that someone quickly threw together as a joke, and didn’t bother taking out
This turned out great! It was cool to see the interview with NatterJohn!
Nice of the princess to invite us over for a picnic! Eh, Luigi?
I hope she made lots of spaghetti!
Luigi, look! ...it's from Bowser!
I didn't know how much of a Mario nerd I was until I knew every single point on this iceberg.
God I am sick of iceberg videos. This is *the* last one I'll ever watch. Congrats.
Thank you! I think?
It pains me how you keep pronouncing Kun as cun(ning) instead of how it is actually pronounced. Kun is pronounced like coon, like a racoon. It is a Japanese Honorific that is used when referring to young males.
With that said, this iceberg is very well done! I actually learned some things that I *didn't* know, which is really something, considering I am very well versed with anything having to do with Mario.
Edit: I just saw the ghostly face thing from the goop maps and, as I was looking at it, I felt I had seen it before. Or at least it's face. And I just cannot place *where*... does anyone have any idea of where that face has also been?
When I used to play New Super Mario Bros Wii with my siblings we would always trade yoshis so we could get the color we wanted.
About the flash games, there is a Mario Kart Double Dash one which is backed up but there's also a Super Circuit one which is totally lost, except for some wallpapers.
Nice! Always enjoy these type of videos. Subbed

We were THIS CLOSE to having Goth Rosalina.
Why does Tyson's voice just get more depressed throughout the video while he's talking about like the most wholesome stuff ever
uhm, character development
"Metal Mario"
"See ya!"
"And Toadsworth."
"AAAAH!"
"...and Toadsworth"
Toadsworth: "OUgH!"
I doubt that was the toy train it was referring to. Further into the level, there are conveyor belts followed by 2 towers of stacked blocks of various sizes for Mario to climb. The farther side has the launch star while the closer side has a pipe for a sub-area.
If you decide not to use the spring power-up and climb this closer tower of blocks, there is a tiny toy train you can see in 1st person, hidden away under a block
The abyss is my favorite part
That’s always the best part. Duh
This is one of the best iceberg videos I've seen
14:44 "Pianissimo" actually means "very slow", not very soft.
Just thought I'd point that out
No, it actually means “very soft” because you can’t change the bpm within the music without changing the time signature or actually telling the musician bpm= (insert number here). No hate, just trying to clear up a misconception.
@@mochamanplays257 Pianissimo might mean that in music theory, but literally, it means very slow.
Not trying to argue either, just clearing that up
God this iceberg was so good
Thanks!
im so friking hyped
Fun fact: the actors of Mario and Luigi in the bad super Mario movie were actually drunk while filming the movie because of how much of a disaster and how much they hated filming it.
Am I the only one who thinks Ludwig looks an awful lot like miyamoto? If you look at his hair, you can see the same overhang miyamoto has. And it is said that the koopalings were originally based of the developers of the game.

Very good video though I'm surprised the mario timeline wasn't mentioned. For example the Mario & Luigi and Luigi's mansion series are all technically canonical when you consider that E gadd is mentioned in Sunshine which is a canon/mainline Mario game. There's also the fun theories that actors take the places of bowser and other characters in the mario kart series and that some of the Paper Mario games only take place in a book.
Yeah, that honestly should have been an entry, however I didn’t make the iceberg, NatterJohn did.
I didn’t include any of the Mario sub series because I felt those probably deserved their own standalone Iceberg.
@@NatterJohn Ahh, thanks for answer. Regardless I think you still did a really good job on the iceberg. Considering how the massive the mario franchise is people could honestly make separate icebergs for lore and fan-made stuff like machinemas and games.
Paper Mario does take place inside of a book, according to Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam
If there's a spin-off iceberg, you could include Super Mario Bros. Special 4-2 pipe dead end
Neat video

maybe add goombob from mario party advance somewhere on the spin-offs iceberg and maybe mention how his name in Italian is the same as galoomba like in Japanese
That weird smileyface made me feel like it was that tornado from super Mario bros 3. I have no idea how I remembered it like that. It's like that McCollough effect.
I might've seen the tornado in Mario maker with a white face at the bottom so I might remembered it like that
It looks very similar other than the lack of a mouth on the Twister (the tornado enemy).
Just as a heads up you repeated "its designed to be the most difficult levels in the game similar to The Perfect Run from.Super Mario Galaxy 2, Champion's Road from Super Mario 3D World and the darker side from Super Mario Odassy" like 3 times in a row
That's the joke
Nice video
Can't wait
very, very cool!
I think the hidden train might be that somewhere in toytime galaxy, you cam go into first person to clip into a block and find a tiny train there
Happy face Sprite kinda looks like Big Bob from Undertale
A perfect way to catch up
The circle face sprite is obviously a placeholder for the pokey enemy. It is with the other desert sprites!
The happy face version of the iceberg reminds me of the blocks with faces in Eversion (a retro-styled platformer for PC with a creepy twist)
1:02:49 there’s something so wholesome about Dedede casually taking care of a dog
i found the gold train level in super mario 3d world on accident and im proud of it
1:01:18 sponge from marios mystery meat lol
Since super Mario Bros two and three didn’t happen then that means that super Mario world is the true American Mario sequel.
58:35 I love Scripulous Fingore!
1:23:40 ironically, in a griffpatch tutorial video, there was a bug where the coin block would constantly spew out coins.
the first time was a feature length film this is a whole damn dvd
Oh hey funny being mentioned in the surprised.
1:08:04 i think there was a reference to this in undertale, upon interacting with a specific something, there pops up a speech bubble, this exact face appears in said bubble, before initiating a fight with one of the amalgamates
21:32 i remember this video, i watched it a lot because i liked all the bullet bills
My theory is that the smiley face was used as a placeholder for the top part of the Pokey's sprite (the cactus enemy) during development and devs simply forgot to remove it. That makes sense considering it is found in the desert enemies file and the top part of a Pokey has a face, is round shaped, and has a small animation. The smiley could've been a quick sprite created only to test the animation of said part.
"He (referring to Bowser in Wreck it Ralph) is seen drinking Coffee and Speaking, however, this could just be Movie Logic" I'm not sure what this implies. From what i've researched "Movie Logic" is BS that makes a scene make sense. Ex: The End of Titanic, Jack could have just climbed onto the door as well but Movie Logic says he died from the cold just so we could have that sad scene. So saying "Bowser Speaking is Movie Logic" implies that Bowser can't talk which is obviously wrong, he talks in every Mario Party game, Every 3d Mario Game, and the Mario RPG's. And i've never seen Bowser drink anything but saying "Bowser Drinking coffee is Movie Logic" implies that he needs a good reason to drink coffee, like him just being thirsty or just wanting a coffee doesn't make any sense. Maybe I misunderstood what you meant, if you could, would you please explain what the Quote at the very beginning of this comment means?
I meant just this isn't something Bowser normally does, he does sometimes but his current design only speaks in roars or on the occasion one or two words. In the RPGS and the Mario games, minus Sunshine of course, and Mario Party his talking is in the form of text which is still talking but actually speaking words is a rare occasion.
@@AverageT I think i see what you mean now, thank you for clarifying
What if the happy face sprite is an early version of phanto since phanto appears in desert levels too
I think the smile sprite might have been sorta a twister enemy (from smm2) and they just cut it for some reason and added it in smm2
Buzzy Beetles and Spinys also appear in Links Awakening. Also isle Delfino is on the globe model, it just has no texture.

Charles Martinet voicing Bowser in SM64 reminds me of how Benedict Cumberbatch plays Doctor Strange and also voiced Dormammu, the final villain of the first film
