I just started making Cowboy Coffee. I don't usually drink coffee without a sweetener, but I notice the Cowboy coffee is not as bitter and don't mind drinking it black. Thanks for sharing Erik
I just stumbled upon this recently and it is my new favorite thing. Thanks for sharing what you know and the great peace many of us cannot experience at home.
From USA. Came across your videos recently, enjoy them, Thanks. I do enjoy watching the coffee tradition and the Thumbs up. I get great chuckles seeing the well used, well broken in pot with many seasons of tar on it. Used, not abused. I have wondered through many of your video's, if it was instant coffee or ground you use, now I know. Nothing like a good cup of dark coffee and great scenery. Happy trails.
Hands down, best channel I have seen. Thank you for sharing all your knowledge and adventures. I really like tea in the woods, for some reason, yet at home I prefer coffee. Of course I make a big production of my coffee which would be unpleasant outdoors.
Myself I'm boiling the water, put the cattle to the side and add the coffee. Then I put it over the heat again and let it get a quick boil, just so the rolling boil make the coffee mix and there are no dry coffee laying on top of the water. Put the cattle to the side again and let it all settle until you can pour it without any coffee grains.... approximately 3-5 minutes. I prefer it strong as you but by not boiling the coffee from the beginning you avoid a little of that bitterness that cover the good coffee taste. I grew up with it this way in your neighbor country in the west. Amazing videos and great work!
For anyone wondering on which brand of coffee Erik is using, it's 'Gevalia Mellanrost Brygg' - Mostly only available in Sweden, but can probably be bought online somewhere...
Hello from Wyoming Erik! Like you, any outing into the country is a good excuse to make coffee. Strong always better than weak, for sure. I love the "patina" your coffee pot has taken on from many fires; mine looks similar. Thanks for sharing. You have a kindred spirit here in Cowboy country.
Being English I like tea Erik....but usually slip in a wee dram of Scotch to warm me up on colder hikes. That said, I like coffee, too. Whatever our tastes, I think it great to get on a 'brew' in the outdoors in a convenient spot, relax, take in the surroundings, check equipment, plan ahead and so on. Good video.
I love cowboys because I love John Wayne movies. I love coffee but have to drink it weak because I get indigestion easily. I love all your shows because they are peaceful & calming. Thank you for sharing with us! Thumbs up! 👍👍👍
I've been drinking yerba mate, guayusa, and green tea. Sometimes I mix in some coffee for the flavor. The green tea I've been drinking lately ("gunpowder") has a nice, clear effect.
My favorite is Swedish M40 mess kit. i take the aluminum one for backpacking, and take the stainless steel for car camping. I just made a titanium windscreen to replace the aluminum SVEA so i can use it as hobo stove to burn wood logs and charcoal.
Five and a half scoops of coffee!! Yikes, here in the USofA, we call that "axe head coffee".... strong enough to float an axe head on!! LOL. Love your videos, Man. Ax
Now that is how you make a good cup of coffee. My co-workers tell me that they know my morning ritual is as soon as I get to the office, a cup of coffee is made. Great video, Erik.
I was wondering how you made your coffee and avoided the grounds going in your cup, so it’s good to see this. Course grind. I take a little macchiato for espresso ☕️👍
I picked up a Primus LiTech kettle as well and tried your technique. Your method worked perfectly. No grinds! That makes a great coffee. It's as good as a French Press or better. However, I don't think I'm going to live long enough to have that amazing patina that your kettle has around the outside, though. Thanks!
Hi Erik I'm sure you have been asked dozens of times before. What kind/brand of kettle are you using? All the camping kettles I find online have plastic coating on the handle. Thank for sharing, only just stumbled across your channel today. I love the simplicity of your videos, very well shot too. Much appreciated Blair from Scotland
This movie brought back very fond memories of my trip to Helsingborg, and Oland (Stora Alvaret). The first morning I made coffee and my host kindly emptied it out and made "Swedish Coffee". She used a lot more coffee than I had. I quickly learned. It was one of the most memorable weeks of my life. I really enjoy your videos Erik. All the best to you. Tony
Uppskattar verkligen dina videos. Vi är bosatta i Miami och jag saknar svensk natur, du ger oss en boost att oxa vidare här och snart kunna vara tillbaka i skog och mark i riket! Tack!
On a canoe trip down the Suwanee river 6 of us , most in solo canoes , spent a couple of weeks on the river. Towards the end we were running short on coffee grounds. Let me back up for a second. We would make the cowboy coffee in a large , well used , 16 cup coffee pot over the fire. When we realized there would not be enough grounds by using fresh grounds each morning for the rest of the trip. We came to the conclusion that we would keep the old grounds in the pot and add a small amount of the fresh grounds each morning for the rest of the trip. It was different but pretty good coffee each morning. That proves the old saying about everything tasting better when camping ..... is true. LOL ,LOL
great clip and coffee cooking tips, thanks Erik. i like to take a coffee break(thermos) on top of a mountain on my cycle home each day and would love to add a coffee cooking ritual when i have time/energy. only strong coffee does the trick for me too, i love the extra spoon you added when you were ready already, nice one.. ! i'll make a simple stove and keep an eye out for one like yours. what other special treats do you enjoy in your moments of peaceful solitude.. ?
Thanks Derek. The ritual is relaxing in itself but takes time. I sometimes just bring a thermos with me. My special treats are biscuits and sandwiches I guess :)
Sometimes I use coffee that they sell like tea bags. So you just boil your water and place your "coffee bag" in the water. Some coffee bags have a little string, like a tea bag, so you can dunk it up and down. These small coffee bags are very easy to carry. I like Maxwell House.
Hei Erik, James Hoffmann said he wants to make a video about cowboy coffee. I think you would be the best person to take James for a hike in the woods and show how you make your coffee in the Swedish way.
That grind seemed to include at lot of various sized coffee. I'm pretty sure that was well over extracted but I guess it makes for "cowboy coffee" ie you drink what you have 😄
I use a 6 cup percolator. Works fine, but I think I've got to get me one of those wooden cups. My tin one doesn't hold the heat. Need one of those Swedish axes too.
in eastern europe they always made this kind of "cowboy coffee", from coffee beans, ground coffee (grinding the beans with a mill). then either boil the water over a fire or with an electric boiler (in the offices). when water boils, coffee is ready. only later they got instant coffee or machines. im not much of a coffee drinker, if coffee is too strong i get too impacient and edgy for office work (loose diplomacy when dealing with problems and having to find work arounds).
Eric, a little tip for you: adding crushed egg shells to your coffee (as it cooks) will make it taste more mellow and less bitter from the acidity of the coffee, because the egg shells are alkaline due to the calcium
Really nice to watch! Now I want a coffee too... :) I usually take a teastrainer with me to get sure there is no ground coffee in my cup! If its too hot I`d like to drink cold beer ;)
Erik, when you finish the boiling process it is better to add to the coffee some little cold water or, even better, the snow, that makes the coffee settle down the pot faster and easier, try it. Meanwhile, I would like to thank you for your great videos, one can dream watching them. The light was so beautiful over there. Have you done a video with the Northern Lights?
A traditional coffee that Swedish immigrants carried with them into the many Lutheran churches of the American midwest. Strong black coffee and bland food, is Scandinavian heaven!
Great video! Thanks! Would you consider filter coffee. Makes the clean up easier. BTW, have you ever hiked in the U.S.? I hiked Guadalupe Peak last week. Fantastic trip.
I as well use a firebox for making coffee. I also enjoy hot cocoa in the Michigan winter while hiking. So nice while out in the forest. Thanks for sharing Erik!
So good, love your films and info. Was wondering how the coffee didn't get stuck in your teeth. Letting it settle for 5 minutes is the answer! Great stuff keep it up Thanks
I’m going to try making some fresh coffee this way. The firebox stove is a cool way to enjoy wood fire and cook. I usually carry Starbucks Via instant, which is good and strong. That is for morning and maybe lunch. For later, and especially before bedtime, I love a cup of HuKwa tea with a teaspoon of honey. Very relaxing. I don’t know if you can get HuKwa in Sweden. I buy it from Mark Wendell company in MA, USA.
Great, thanks for sharing :-) When I'm outdoors I only drink coffee in the mornings (after sleeping outside) and for special moments like to pamper myself when it's wet or nasty weather. Otherwise I normaly broil tea or drink a simple soup throughout the day to quench my thirst. If it's nice and warm I just drink plain water.
Do You have preferred time of boiling cowboy coffee? I prefer 4-5 minutes on not too big fire, usually use Optimus multifuel "spider" kind, or Svea 123, with higher simple pot. Boiling coffee isn't popular in Poland (totally !!!) , but everyone, who tasted, is pleased very much
Erik, I have not read all comments. Love your movies. I wish to ask....is there a particular pot that serves well? Presently I use the same stove and love it, but brew my coffee differently. All the best,Bob
In Australia we call that "Turkish Coffee" - as it was taught to us by Turkish migrants of various generations going back over a hundred years. You like your coffee STRONG - maybe you could just start chewing the coffee beans and skip the time wasted in boiling the water. :) But then you'd miss out on the fun of lighting a fire. When walking in winter in Australia it is a thermos of hot, white, sweet coffee. In Summer, several litres of plain old water and a hot sweet coffee at the end of the day to convince me I am not so tired after all.
Love the smell of coffee but can only drink it with cream! Tend to either have tea with milk or fruit teas, then I don't have to take milk with me! Cheers Mary
Thanks for the video. Really enjoy the videos, I subscribed. I do have a question: Is coffee in Sweden always drank black? Is sugar ever added? Personally, I never add cream or milk to my coffee, but almost always add a little sugar. Thanks!
Start with cold water - add enough coffee to lose sight of the water surface - bring to a roiling boil for 1 to 1.5 minutes but not to a frothing boil. It should not spill over: - remove and do a controlled gravity drop from hip height. Do it 4 times - pour 1/2 cup of cold water into pot from hip height. Pot is on the ground. - allow to sit 3 minutes - do not agitate - pour and enjoy
Hey ! Says the Canadian This is ballistic, rapid combustion, very explosive, nitro induce, crude coffee oil and now you had up 7 big spoonful for tow cup of water i thought it was 6 but i was wrong, for myself i like the Italian coffee machine percolator, BIALETTI Moka express 6 cup and i just need 4 spoonfull compress coffee , you must shave 3-5 time a day ?
My father and I made cowboy coffee when we packed back in the day. Best stuff ever. Thank you.
I love your channel, thank you, Erik. I enjoy your peace and solitude.
I just started making Cowboy Coffee. I don't usually drink coffee without a sweetener, but I notice the Cowboy coffee is not as bitter and don't mind drinking it black. Thanks for sharing Erik
Black coffee is refreshing and addictive, a small ritual in the woods. Thanks for watching
I think, cowboy coffee is better than starbuck's....welldone Erik 😊👍👍👍
Absolutely! Thanks Elly
How long would you boil it?
your right
I just stumbled upon this recently and it is my new favorite thing. Thanks for sharing what you know and the great peace many of us cannot experience at home.
I like my coffee only in the morning so on a hike I enjoy green tea with fresh ginger and honey.
Another work of art. Thanks.

I like this style of making coffee. I don`t like bitter coffee. Thank you!
Really enjoy watching your videos. Inspires me to go out solo.
Agreed :) Have been out solo a few times since I found Erik.
Spot on. There's nothing like a strong coffee wherever you are but especially camping.
I made coffee your way while camping over the weekend - my buddy was sceptical but soon won over! Thank you for sharing :)
For anyone wondering on which brand of coffee Erik is using, it's 'Gevalia Mellanrost Brygg' - Mostly only available in Sweden, but can probably be bought online somewhere...

Hello Erik, thank you for sharing this helpful tip on how to make Cowboy coffee. All the best to you. 🤗
I love cowboy coffee, the secret was coarse grind, it works like a champ. No sugar or cream needed, tastes great.
I love cowboys because I love John Wayne movies. I love coffee but have to drink it weak because I get indigestion easily. I love all your shows because they are peaceful & calming. Thank you for sharing with us! Thumbs up!

Tack själv! Kul att kunna bidra med lite inspiration.
You are a great inspiration, Erik. Thank you! 🙌🏽
Agree- weak coffee is waste of effort
T 25 My grandfather said that the coffee is strong enough when the spoon can stand vertically in the cup 😁

Nothing better than a strong coffee 👍🏽
His voice is nice. Its a different kind of deep from the usual deep voice.
Coffee or Billy tea or maybe we should call it Billy Coffee down here in Australia hehehehe because we use a Billy can :)
Take care. Craig
Thanks for that Craig, I'm sure that is tasty. Erik
Cool way to make cowboy coffee ✌keep posting more videos
great video, i too love my coffee hiking. i will try your way
Cowboy coffee is the best! Thanks for the video!
Bra redigerad video. Tycker också om att du gillar naturen och att skåda fåglar.
:-)
Super video!!!
Think I may try this. Thanks Erik.
Really nice to watch! Now I want a coffee too... :) I usually take a teastrainer with me to get sure there is no ground coffee in my cup! If its too hot I`d like to drink cold beer ;)
Very good voice for documentary .. please use it often in your films.
Morning coffee.. holy moment :)
I never drink cowboy coffee but i'm using the Bialetti (small one) or just some instant coffee.
You are the real deal Eric!
I’ve always used a Moka pot / Italian stove top espresso. Recently I’m interested in trying something lighter weight. I’ll have to try cowboy.
tried it, pretty easy, tastes great.
Enjoy coffee time

Thanks for the tip Giuseppe! I have a little glimpse of northern lights in a few videos.
No Brasil temos um excelente café!
This man doesn't sweat, he percolates.
A traditional coffee that Swedish immigrants carried with them into the many Lutheran churches of the American midwest. Strong black coffee and bland food, is Scandinavian heaven!

Loved this video! Haha! :D You are the man bro! Good luck to all your future adventures!
I love you man you seem like a really nice guy !!!😁☺️☺️
need adding crushed eggshells to the coffee to settle the grounds and remove bitterness
I prefer tea but that truly was a holy moment :)
now that explains everything

My favorite camping drink is fir tea.
Best wishes :)
wow cowboy coffee is good
Where can i get the frame that you put the fire in??
Look for the 5" G2 Folding Firebox Stove. The most advanced Hobo Stove I have ever seen.
www.fireboxstove.com
Greetings
how long to you cook the coffee? do you take off the fire when it comes to a boil? thanks for all your videos! awesome quality!
Yes I take it off immediately when it boils, otherwise it might get a little sour. Thanks Don
I like cowboy coffee because it's simple; requires only a pot; simple to make and easy to clean up.
I,ll miss you in the morning ..when I have to make my own coffee 😉
Love the smell of coffee but can only drink it with cream! Tend to either have tea with milk or fruit teas, then I don't have to take milk with me! Cheers Mary
Thanks for that Mary
-Erik
Where can I get a kuksa like that??
hi erik, what are u using camp fire tool? can l know the brand? name... thanks~~
Thanks for the video. Really enjoy the videos, I subscribed. I do have a question: Is coffee in Sweden always drank black? Is sugar ever added? Personally, I never add cream or milk to my coffee, but almost always add a little sugar.
Thanks!
Thanks! No it is very personal how people like their coffee here. Many want sugar or milk in it. I prefer it black though.
Cowboy coffee, nice coffee... .😍
Eric if pour a little cold water in the pot after you take it off the fire that will make the grounds settle to the bottom faster. Just saying.
Thanks Jim! I'll try that
Start with cold water
- add enough coffee to lose sight of the water surface
- bring to a roiling boil for 1 to 1.5 minutes but not to a frothing boil. It should not spill over:
- remove and do a controlled gravity drop from hip height. Do it 4 times
- pour 1/2 cup of cold water into pot from hip height. Pot is on the ground.
- allow to sit 3 minutes
- do not agitate
- pour and enjoy
Thank you. :)
Thanks, Erik. Greetings from the US! What is the cup you use? I'm looking for a nice wooden camp cup that's about that size.
It's an old cup I made myself long ago, usually called 'kuksa', or 'kosa'. Thanks
Hey Erik, i think you know I absolutely like this video! ;)
Hehe, yes. It was my pleasure. Cheers Erik
Hey ! Says the Canadian
This is ballistic, rapid combustion, very explosive, nitro induce, crude coffee oil and now you had up 7 big spoonful for tow cup of water i thought it was 6 but i was wrong, for myself i like the Italian coffee machine percolator, BIALETTI Moka express 6 cup and i just need 4 spoonfull compress coffee , you must shave 3-5 time a day ?
Sweden and Finland are heavy coffe consumers
Strong black coffee!
