- Take a look behind the scenes of A THOUSAND SUNS. Over the next few weeks we’ll be releasing special features that highlight exactly how we brought each episode to life by using a wide variety of filmmaking techniques. We hope you enjoy, and stay tuned for more!
A THOUSAND SUNS series was created by Macgregor and produced by BlackMilk Studio. The first six episodes were directed by Ruairi Robinson, Macgregor, Tyson Wade Johnston and Tim Hyten, written in collaboration with screenwriter Philip Gelatt.

Wow, impressive to hear that some of the shooting was actually done in minus 40 degree weather! Props to the actor and crew for pulling that one off.
to be more precise, the glue started to fail and i looked it up online and it said it worked until minus 40 - but that doesn't mean it was [actually] minus 40 on the day, the glue might just have been "shit" ahah
This one was fantastic. Great creature design and sense of scale. Really wish this were a movie.
Robinsons Leviathan inspires me till today in my film career. Having new art from him is such a blessing.
No idea about that note with super glue, one of those things you only find out when you're out for the day shooting I guess - what an awesome job all the way around. Hoping we get to see a ton more from Ruari soon!
Cast and crew alike KILLED IT! The suit looks amazing
Well done Ruairi! Insane talent mate.
most impressive shortfilm i've seen in many years. hope to see more from you guys soon.
Excellent bit of film-making and world building.
You all actually put in some work for this and it shows. Well done!
YEEES!! this is what i want. Give me more please, I'm so interested into the BTS of the VFX and how you build the matte painting of the worlds.
Me too! I was looking for a BTS on the VFX
I did very much like that ep.
Jesus almighty Christ I can’t believe how good it looked for being 3D printed
We need all these shorts to be full on movies or longer please... Esp Bug. I need that as a full movie, and ICE.
Nice job. Well done to everyone involved!!
Absolutely amazing work. Bravo.
Incredible work! You and your shop are amazing!
Well done. Inspiring.
This was so well done. Screw buying new cameras; I want a 3D printer and a paint tent in my backyard.
This had a lot of death streanding vibes design wise! Great job.
Looks stunning. Great work
This was pretty incredible to see that entire process! Results were stunning
Nice work
Man you should make a movie, like 2+ hours movie, thats one of the best SCIFI i've ever watched 👏
Looks great! Keep it up!
Wow Well Done Guys .I Thought it's Was CG Space Suit and Head Replacement ..Am Still Surprised
It was mostly for real but i had to replace the visor in a couple of shots, we shot some takes with no visor because it kept getting steamed up or covered in ice in the middle of a take, so we did a few with no visor -- and Lee's eyebrows would freeze so i had to color correct them to match the other shots
LOL....Super glue stops sticking at -40*.
I have built 3 Cos-play costumes for my book and well.....Trial and error!!!
I love this channel and the the outstanding work you have done.
Hello from the Great White North!!! (CA).🍁
Was awesome. Make a mini series of ICE..Please! I am kindly asking.
CGI and everything else look immaculate.
Awesome.
So good... nice work folks!
YES. Keep the bts coming
Would LOVE to get a helmet or the files. Watched this, Stunning
Seriously impressive work, really well done, which 3d printer did you use? I saw Raise 3d in the video
Used a raise3d pro2 plus for the big parts, an elegoo mars for the smaller scanner, and an ultimaker 2 on loan from a friend for some additional pieces. Also another friend printed some backup parts on his raise just in case we had a failure at last minute. So we ended up with 2 complete helmets in case something broke on set.
@@RuairiRobinson That's very interesting information. I was considering getting a Raise3D Pro3 myself for scifi props and costumes. What did you use for the vizor? Did you vacuum form it or did you use of the shelf parts?
@@LaurentFranchet-sn2in I'd probably get a few bambu labs printers instead if i was making this today. They aren't as big but they are very fast and high quality. Maybe try out that K1 Max too for bigger parts.
For visor I 3d printed a buck and Alec Gillis of Amalgamated Dynamics made a mold from that and re-cast a buck that could withstand vacuum forming temps and they made several visors for me. I also got a friend who works at a car manufacturer to do a couple in Acrylic. The visor had a frame that could snap in and out of the helmet easily. So while on location in Iceland we cycled visors between takes while our actor kept the helmet on, with ones that had been freshly defogged.
Nice..
I'm curious about the face plate for the helmet, was that £D print or sourced somewhere else? Getting it that smooth must of been tricky
We had no idea what was going to work in advance so we had 2 versions made; First I 3d printed a buck then Alec Gillis of Amalgamated Dynamics made a mold from it and recast it in clay so it would better withstand heat. The resulting clay buck was used to vacuum-form the visor in plastic... another version was vacuum-formed in transparent acrylic, (which is harder plastic) by a friend who works at a car manufacturer using the same buck. We made it so you could pop out visors easily between takes so as it got fogged up they could swap it out in a couple of seconds with a clean version with fresh defogger spray wiped in with a cloth. We had 2 full helmets and I think it was 6 visors set into the orange frame, constantly being cycled.
Incredible! What did you use to remove the layer lines from the FDM prints?
sandpaper and self-leveling primer
I am so ignorant. For some reason I thought ICE was all CG. Really really high-fi CG but nope, it was real! I guess that's a compliment about how otherworldly the whole shortfilm feels, I thought it wouldn't be possible to make it irl.
Death stranding vibes 🤣good job bravo!
1:17 What did you use instead when the super glue failed it’s bonds?
we used duck tape!
Super well done!! Congratulations! May I ask what scanning studio you used in London? Thanks
Marco
do you have links to the concept artists portfolios ?
Very impressive, I am curious how much money this saved you money wise by 3d printing some of the suit and if it could survive the production of a full length movie. If it couldn't, would printing multiples still be cheaper than multiple suits that were done through injection molding, etc.
Lets milk it 🐄👾
Hey just a heads up, superglue falls apart in -40 conditions.
I'd like to join 👏🏾🥰👆🏼
SuperGlue falls apart at -40 conditions... mike drop....
I thought that all your films were AI, you are literally wasting real money on this?
Cuando empece a ver los capítulos pensé que etaban hechos con inteligencia artificial.... Son unos genios, gracias !!
That's what I'm waiting for in full-length film. Everyone was tired of these stupid comic books and Marvel nausea for children.
