AOL was gonna sell to Bischoff but one of his investors pulled out when they found out TNT wasn’t going to broadcast WCW anymore. Their plan was to take like 2 months off and bring it back rebranded in the summer of 2001.

WCW died much before that because the ratings plus viewership were down by that time. The person who killed WCW is Vince Russo because he made WCW unwatchable.

I don’t understand the need for this series. It’s been said a dozen times by people who were actually there. AOL/Time Warner killed WCW.
Probably not needed, but I'll watch anyways. A few years back, I had an interesting conversation with a younger coworker. He preferred WCW at the time, but he was too young to understand the business end of it. For him WCW folding was just like if his favorite cartoon suddenly stopped airing and he didn't follow wrestling after. I'll let him know about this series. It (probably) won't be any new info for you or me, but he might get a kick out of it now as an adult.
One bummer was that I missed the final Nitro due to college classes. Naturally I watched it after the fact, but it would have hit differently if I didn't know Shane was going to show up.

Man over twenty years after it folded and we’re still talking about WCW. This not only proves how long lasting the brand has endured in the minds of wrestling fans, but also how impactful the Monday Night Wars were. The mid-late 90s was an era in professional wrestling that will never be seen or forgotten. WWF and Vince McMahon were the perfect villains that needed a perfect hero. WCW was the hero that everyone rooted for, they just couldn’t maintain long enough. And to show just how much of a threat WCW was, Vince was trying to stop them back in the 80s when they were Jim Crockett Promotions.
And Vince Russo's style was so different just ask Jim Cornette.

Ted Turner bought the dying Jim Crockett Promotions in 1988. It was renamed WCW.
From Day 1, every person at Turner not called "Ted Turner" wanted to shut down WCW. But Ted had final say.
In 1996 Turner was acquired by Time Warner. Everyone at Time Warner not named "Ted Turner" wanted to shut down WCW. But Ted still had final say.
In 2000/2001 was AOL-Time Warner merger. Everyone at AOL-Time Warner not named "Ted Turner" wanted to shut down WCW. Ted no longer had final say.

That's what Bischoff would like us to think. Would AOL be so inclined to dumb WCW if it wasn't hemorrhaging millions every year? It probably made the decision very easy for them.

When Ted Turner lost any say in his media empire -- WCW and Goodwill Games were quickly jettisoned.....and Turner stated in 2009 that the latter would have never been cancelled if he remained in charge. The joke for years in the WCW office was -- jobs are safe as long as Ted was around to cut the checks; in the end, it was the correct assessment.
I hear Ric Flair on Twitter says he was upset they didn’t get him to do this documentary. If anyone knows more about WCW it’s Ric Flair because he’s been there the longest even before it was WCW it’s well JCP which was run under the NWA banner
I'm disappointed too. Flair was the face of the company before it was even WCW and I'm sure would have some great stories to tell. At least Bret is in it. Judging by the trailer, he's got some interesting thing to say (lol.) Bret and Flair were probably the two guys who hated WCW the most.

Apparently UPN (a TV network that was airing WWF SmackDown! at the time) didn't wanted anything to do with WCW, which might partially explain why that angle tanked

WCW Monday Nitro was doing fine rating rise towards the end for TNT/Turner but unfortunately advertisers were shying away/doing want their products advertised during Nitro (so it got canceled, cause it wasn't bringing in the advertising revenue).
@@cookslooking10 This one is a maybe. Turner execs, even when WCW was turning a profit, simply didn’t like wrestling.
Another factor is that Kellner was the guy who ended the Golden Age of animation on WB. He was the one who cancelled Animaniacs and other shows that adults were enjoying, because the kid demographic wasn’t watching it enough.

Was born in 1981, liked both WWF and WCW growing up mainly depending on where my favorites were at. Most of that time I generally preferred WCW for whatever reason, it seemed more real or authentic to me.
We dont need this series but I’d like to watch it
We all know WCW ended because
1: WWF got better
2: WCW had bad management
3: WCW had old stars and up and comers that were as plain as white bread
4: they sold out to AOL Time Warner
5: AOL Time Warner Sold out to WWF
6: WCW overspent and ran out of money they especially over spent on wrestlers contracts
7: quality of the product went down
8: it was no longer edgy for teens and adults and went back to being boring and child like whilst wwf was being extra edgy with the attitude era
9: WCW let the inmates run the asylum (gave too much power to wrestlers)
10: Ted Turner was pushed out from his own company

As a wcw fan 2001 I cried hard as a teen
It was Jaime Kellner, the AOL Time Warner president at that time, that killed WCW. Dusty Rhodes said in the Monday Night Wars documentary that “AOL Time Warner, they didn’t understand the wrestling business. They didn’t remember how wrestling was started when they were in WTBS in Atlanta. But they were beneath them.”

Cornette foams at the mouth with hate upon anything that isn't smoky mountain, his wwf writing or midnight express related. Pretty sure corny knows a dude like the Rock is gonna at least give Russo a fair opportunity to tell his story. Is Russo the genius he thinks he is? No. However is he the only reason wcw/tna went down the toilet? Hell nah. That's just a cop-out from lazy wrestlers who either weren't motivated or just weren't able to get over.

Jim Herd was long gone by the time WCW died. There is no reason to talk about him since WCWE became very successful after he left.

Because that myth ran it's course. If mcmcahon could filter out bad ideas then raw and smackdown wouldn't be under 2 million viewers, Cornette might be smart with his off-the-cuff wit, but nothing he ever wrote/booked set the world on fire in terms of getting over. Russo struggled in WCW because wrestlers were purposely flubbing their gimmicks because they wanted Russo to fail. WCW talent got paid whether their performance got over or not, which is why they loved Bischoff.

For those wondering why sting, Hogan or Rick were interviewed. Well, sting is retired from wrestling including doing interviews on the topic. Both Hogan and Rick have shown their disapproval towards the dark side of the ring. So why work with them?

But in the WWE storyline, WWE beat WCW at their game. Eric Bischoff really did try, believe it or not. But you all have to understand that Eric Bischoff didn’t have as much money, power, and influence outside WCW compared to Ted Turner or anyone else on that level like Ted Turner, who had the final say in everything because it was his company.*
*You also have to understand that yes, wrestling was very popular at that time because of the success of the WCW/NWO Era and The WWE Attitude Era, but it wasn’t like it is now. Many networks at that time didn’t want wrestling on their network, especially if you weren’t Ted Turner or anyone else on that level like Ted Turner with money, power, influence like that support like that. *If Ted Turner had full control, WCW had no chance of falling or dying off. In 2001, Ted Turner had a great relationship with Eric Bischoff and was pleased with the work that Eric Bischoff did in the late 1990s in WCW, bringing it to new heights with Eric Bischoff in charge finally being able to compete with WWE and then later beating them 83 weeks straight by being different than WWE. If Ted Turner and Eric Bischoff had done this again in 2001 with the rebuilding and rebranding of WCW the right way, WCW would still be here without a question.*
*So, people have been going around for years and years now, discussing who really killed WCW. No, it wasn’t Eric Bischoff, Vince Russo, Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash, the NWO, or anyone who had a higher position at that time in WCW who had control. Even though some of the people I mentioned caused problems during that time in WCW that didn’t help the wrestling company, it got out of hand. Eric.Bischoff stated he started to lose faith in the company when Thunder was added.
Thunder was a good idea because the product was hot. Problem was not using it to push/develop the mid carders and give people a break from NWO overload. I mean Hogan and his cronies cut the same promo every effin' week, that's why the product went down.

I feel very fortunate to have been a big wrestling fan as a kid back during the Monday Night Wars. Those who didn't live through it have been fed a very biased narrative by WWE about WCW. But when WCW (specifically Nitro) was on point from around 96-98, it was IMO the greatest wrestling show ever. Definitely my fondest memories as a wrestling fan. WCW/nWo really kicked off the Attitude Era and forced Vince to either change or go out of business. That period, combined with the Nintendo 64 wrestling games, made it an awesome experience as a kid.

Ok What’s up with the WCW slander. I knw the winner of the war gets to tell the story but WCW was this close from having a “who killed wwf” documentary. For four yrs 94-early 98 wcw was the number one wrestling company in the world. Someone born in 1996 and up dosent know this because of bias hit pieces like this. It could’ve went either way folks.
They have to 💩 on WCW because they all work for WWE under legends contracts. Even though Vince is gone, those guys are so hen pecked they’re too afraid to say anything positive about WCW because Vince hated WCW so much he had a rule that none of this talent were allowed to put them over.
