    - In this video i show you how to punch holes and program music for the 20-note music box set and the 30-note music box set.
It is sometime a daunting process and it can drive you crazy in no time. I have been programming these music boxes for a long time now and wanted to share the methods i have developed to make the process less daunting and drive you less crazy. These music boxes are available everywhere and if you want to try them out and make your own songs this tutorial might help along the way!
It took a full day to cut these holes, longer time because I filmed it but without filming it would still take about 4-8 hours.
If you have advice or ideas on my two questions that I am asking in the video (laser cutting software & 20-note music box continuous paper roll) the best place to send me ideas is actually by posting a picture on the Marble Machine Development photo sharing page:
    bit.ly/2ljPoOQ
The fun thing with the photo sharing page is that everyone can see any conversations on these topics.
We will redesign our website in the upcoming months and I would like to start a forum on the new website to discuss things like this publicly, until then the photo sharing page is the closest thing to a forum we have right now.
I am not sure which Wintergatan Wednesday the final version of the Music Box song will be played, i said "in the next video" but that will probably not happen as we are working with MMX now.
Good luck with the Music Boxes! Martin
Video Made by Martin Molin & Hannes Trainerds Knutsson
If you want to support what we do:
The fact that you are watching the videos and care about the music and future of Wintergatan is the best support anyone can have, I want to thank everyone who is here for that kind of support, it is really the fuel for the Wintergatan Engine.
If you apart from that further want to support the projects, we have these different options set up:
    RUclips SPONSOR
►Sponsor the Wintergatan RUclips Channel by clicking the blue sponsor button next to subscribe
    PATREON
    ►www.patreon.com/wintergatan
    PAYPAL ME
    ►www.paypal.me/wintergatan
Why do we accept support in this way?
I, Martin, can already sustain myself 100% doing what I love to do. If you want to support artists/organisations who have not yet reached that privileged position, please consider supporting other artists/organisations who need the support more. With that said, I have too many ideas and too little time and with your support I can get more help from people around me to execute the ideas better and bring them out in the world faster. As an engineering student I would love to make a device that automatically punches holes. I think one could make “a music maker box” a music box that punches holes instead of playing them, an arduino could control the hole punching, and an encoder could Tracy the rotation of a drive wheel. The goal being you export a MIDI to the device and it automatically prints out a perfect copy.

Perhaps print it on tyvec, cut join and punch it out. Assuming tyvec would be strong enough. You would have to fiddle somewhat to get the scale right.

Yes, actually you can by trying to feed the arduino the midi data to serial data so that the arduino can read it, add some mechanical puncher then done

Programming music boxes myself I would add a very useful warning that you cannot place two successive notes on the same line too close to each other or the 2nd one will not play. However it may depend on the specific mechanics of the music box you are using.

You don’t need midi, also, most music boxes only play in c major (no flats or sharps- which most songs have) unless you customize the metal rods on the inside... just look up sheet music and copy the notes (remember the song has to have no sharps or flats... one thing that I have learned is if you play the same note twice instead moving to a sharp or a flat, that Could work, just doesn’t sound as good

Hello, this might seem a bit akward but im gonna wright this comment anyway...
So first of im Hannes from Hamburg, Germany and i like the music you and youre friends create, in my everyday life i work as a Motorcycle mechanic and many of my friends think im not the soft kind of guy and a person with strong emotions but sometimes i become soft and i get really emotional and i had one of these moments right now when you played the song on the e-piano i just startet crying and started thinking of my dead grandparents that was in one way sad from my perspective but in the same time i felt happy and open minded. Thanks for that experience. wish yall a nice week and a great day =)

The sound is produced by metal tongues of different lengths for each note. Above each of these is a wheel with teeth, a bit like a gear. When the wheel is turned, the teeth pluck the metal tongue, producing the note. When the paper is fed through, the holes in the paper latch on to the teeth on the upper side of the wheel and turn the wheel slightly as the paper is pulled foward, making the teeth on the lower side of the wheel pluck the metal tongue. Hope that makes sense!

At 0:41 he shows both boxes. One on bottom showing has more contact points on the pulling wheel. Does anyone know what version of the music box this is? I happened to own one of the ones shown on top with less contact points. Not only do I HAVE to thicken up the paper with 2 layers of tape to make the paper not fold upward into the umpty pockets where contact points are on the other one to not have it play random notes, also because it has not enough contact with the paper, it simply somehow can't pull the paper forward, having it brake every now and then, it seems to do it more and more the more I play a specific roll. It's fucking annoying having to tape all these strips with multiple layers of tape since it makes it harder to poke holes in it and also takes a shitload of time.
If anyone can help out or tell me more that'd be fuckin really appreciated

I recognize the sheet music he uses is the same as mine. The music box doesn't have the problem you described with yours. Best of luck!

Oh, I just realised you're working with rolls of paper with all the score markings already printed. I use a different system where my computer prints it out using a free software that came with my 30-note programmable music box (I got them at a music box museum in Japan). Unfortunately, the free software only works on Windows XP. I use an old laptop just for this purpose.

I would take the pre-printed paper roll, and glue it onto a thicker paper, like a thin cardstock. Then after it's dried and flat, do all the hole marking and punching. Maybe that would work?

I actually could do this!!!! I found a link to this when I was searching for custom-melody music boxes online and this sounds like SO much fun but would also challenge my follow-through skills quite a bit. The way you use MIDI is super useful and makes a lot of sense and I would really like to give this a go sometime--keeping your tricks for fixing punching wrong notes in mind, because I know I will make many fuck-ups ;)
I found the fact that a music box doesn't play the note until the punch ends very interesting and I think I learned a little bit about the mechanics of music boxes through this. Thank you for enlightening us nostalgic folk who love the aching sounds of music boxes with a passion. I will absolutely be attempting this as a hobby and hopefully not failing miserably or getting frustrated beyond belief!

As for the name, it is a stage name I use for many forms of art (I've onlyposted one of the beats I worked on so far, but I will post more music as I get it finished. I have some decent beats but...being a rapper at nearly 40 doesn't seem like a sound move for me to make. I might just try to sell the beats). The name is supposed to have a somewhat insidious, mysterious tone to it.... that's what I originally wanted but, interestingly enough, I couldn't think of a name that was true to my nature, my past, my interests and thay didn't sound like a 7th grader came up with it 😄
I decided to let fate choose for me and used the Wu Tang Clan Name Generator create a name for me 😄 That's how Childish Gambino (stage name for a rap artist...who does many other forms of art, that's just his music handle) was created. I figured I'd give it a try.
I put in my name twice: my full name and the short hand version....and The Occultist Gilt and The Golden Mystic were the names that came up. Kind of odd that they are, in essence, the same basic thing. I loved the name, felt grateful to get one that cool and stuck with it.
...it suits me: I have tried many, many ways to connect with God or any celestial entity. I used to call myself a modern shaman when I was younger and in the middle of learning 😄
I mean, I'm perpetually learning....but, then, specifically about the occult.
My wife and I even put our cats' names into it and it would come back with names like "Panther Spunky" for our all black, spaz of a cat. 😄 almost spooky how accurate it was!
Sorry to ramble on 😄 I have a knack for making a short story long 😅
..and no worries about my personal issues. Maybe, had I made a different bed.... it'd be more comfortable lying in it currently 😉😋 Things will work out....or they won't. either way, a new adventure awaits!
