So what is the best second-hand family car available? used estate cars make practical family cars often at a fraction of the cost of a similar SUV. Used estate cars (sometimes known as station wagons) are massively practical with a ton of boot space to absolutely swallow all your family needs.
As well as some good cheap second-hand cars there are also one or two classics here which could soon start to appreciate in value, meaning your second-hand bargain car could end up making you a few quid in years to come. All of these used cars are under £5000 with less than 100k miles on the clock and they are all ULEZ compliant too.
So which of these used estate cars grabs your attention? which one needs to be put in the bin? let me know in the comments.

There's one thing to bear in mind when looking at a diesel vauxhall from insignia age or newer. Some of the engines have sensored glow plugs and if they go they're circa £200 EACH for the part, plus fitting if it goes to the garage plus VAT.

I've got a Vauxhall insignia 2.0CDti Auto SRi estate. Bought it with 40k miles on it in 2013, it's done over 140k now and it's still a great car. Does around 57-60mpg on the motorway, about 40mpg on shorter journeys. I'd say watch out for the oil pump seal as that's a common issue although not a big job to change it. Other than that I can't fault the car. You can buy them for under £2000 for a 2010 model. Some may disagree but for what you can pick them up for these days I think they are a really good car. Even a 2015 model is under £5000.

The BMW right at the beginning was probably the pick of the bunch for me but the Mundano at the end was quite interesting too. Were the wheels & tyres on it standard I wonder? It looked like they didn't really fill out the wheel arches................maybe that was the style back in the day.

@@DefinitelyNotAGuru I can see the attraction of the Merc but, given its age, I would be concerned about tin worm. Corrosion protection was pretty sketchy in vehicles that old. If it isn't rotten it will make a very retro-stylish set of wheels 🚗🚗🚗

6.10 😂🤣😆… nice try Jim… Mr Damon’s twin? 😉. 7.40 is a better likeness… except the yellow makes you look like one of the Simpsons 😁
Another helpful video… I often see a car I’d like to go for in your vids… would have been the Skodas in this one.
I liked the look of the 3 litre Ford, and agree that it would be an investment, assuming it didn’t get written off like my last Ford did 😩.

I'm wanting to get an estate to take my dog places and every day use.
I'm thinking of Skoda but love the Volvo estates.
Does anyone have any others they'd recommend? Especially for ferrying a dog in the back.
Good value to run would be one of the main things I'm wanting.
The first BMW estate looked very, I must look into them to see if they're worth getting.

@@DefinitelyNotAGuru Ford Powershift, a.k.a. Powersh*t. Avoid at all costs. lousy reputation.... The 1.0 litre Ecoboost is surprisingly peppy, but fuel economy isn't as good as Ford would have you believe...... Beware timing belt replacement on the 1.0 litre Ecoboost, as it's a 15 hour job.

You'd have to go a long way to better a well serviced Skoda Octavia Estate 2.0Tdi, if you can find a nice one for £5k...... You do have to watch out for odd ones with Starship Enterprise mileage though..... The CVT gearboxes in Audis are usually avoided by many Jim, as they don't have the best reputation. Audi only used a CVT for a short while, because they were not well received by buyers...... The Volvo V50 looks a good bet for £5k, although this one has the slightly thirsty 2.4 engine. Nice car though. Just put your National Trust sticker in the back window, get some driving gloves, and you've got it made..... Avensis is another good 'un. Boringly reliable. Looks great on your drive if you live in a bungalow with hanging baskets outside... The Dacia is a cheapie, and might do someone who just wants to transport a dog around. Beware these things aren't galvanised during manufacture, and will (and do) rust prematurely.......Dacias even out-do Ford for their Flit Gun paint job..

    • @DefinitelyNotAGuru

Yes the DSG's are much better but the Audi CVT's were decent as far as CVT's go.
