judging by how mac has been proven to have a gang of friends who will go to lengths of: saying homophobic slurs, being racist, and being transphobic, to defend him, i'm going to assume it's none of those.

Subject matter is interesting and welcome
You didn't get anything wrong from my understanding
And you're voice is just fine
      .
Pretty sure the majority of dislikes on this video are people under macdguy doing damage control.
      .
What i dont understand is why they wouldnt bring GMT back after tower unite proved to be a flop, i can understand the switch of engines to offer a wider range of flexibility and ease, but i do not understand why they decided to go through with it, loss of all access to anything that is possibly copyrighted, more workload starting it up, a paywall.
      .
Sad example of someone trying to fix something that is not broken, and is too prideful to admit tower unite failed and bring back GMT

Yeah it's your voice, but there was also way too much bias filler and not just straight hard facts. If you wanted to make a video shitting on MacDGuy you have to go all in on the hard details first, then all that stuff you can add on top later.

@@Smoof5 Fact wise, everything was sourced from the thread. I'm not entirely sure where bias bleeds into it though I don't doubt that my own biases have gotten into it, but source wise everything is there to read for yourself.

I remember gmod tower, was the only gamemode I ever played on gmod, I remember being in the lobby area and hearing 3 people argue who'd they smash, katy perry or kim kardashian, one man said "But kim kardashian looks are just plastic, your literally fucking a barbie doll" God those were the times.

It was reflective of a more innocent and uninhibited era of web history. I'd rather have legions of teenagers with bad mics roast me and call me slurs if it meant I could live in that time again, rather than this overly sterile, corporatized dystopia the internet is devolving into.

Great video, it's a shame that MacDguy can't understand that people just want to play the game that they love. The book analogy is terrible, you'd still be able to read their version and any theft would be purely profit motivated, as opposed to some who's just passionate about your creation and wants to give people a way to experience it again. He's literally taken the game off Gmod, demand makes supply, if he won't supply it it's only fair that someone else does.

GMT was a major part of my gaming from 2009-2013... I remember coming back around 2015 and feeling like things were.. off. Things were improved in some ways but i think they had started to lose the soul of gmt at that point. I remember some of the admins of the time, they seemed to change when gmt really took off initially.
I knew a bit about some of the drama of the time, and it didn't seem that bad during the early years. It seems weird to feel such an attachment to something that i haven't even remotely seen in 6 years now, but this vid took me back. I feel like GMT had more life in it if it wasn't taken down for a pursuit of full time game development employment. It is truly sad how things turned out. Thank you for making this.

    I've played Garry's Mod Tower since 2012.
The game has regressed so hard from being standalone it's impressive. They can no longer render scaled back versions of things that had in the source engine:
    - Gameports were made smaller but couldn't be in the same gameworld as the lobby.)
They continue to chip away at useless features and cannot finish different things like the party system that would take a minimum of a few hours. The gameworlds are all minigames that could be developed by solo developers in Unreal. There's no excuses now that they're using Unreal. This drama only sheds more light on shit they waste their time on instead of finishing the game.
Thanks for also shining a light on the scummy donation thing. As someone who donated it makes me disgusted. I actually liked a lot of the developers, seeing as I've met some of them in-game and have talked to MacDGuy and have interacted with his girlfriend throughout the life of GMT.
Like you said: the overall vibe of the game is dead since you don't have to use the Lobby. Looking at my old screenshots shows how many more people were around/active.
I think another huge setback is the Condos. It's like joining an unmoderated Second Life world, they're either; filled with porn, toast your computer's cpu, or have some annoying opinions all over. They feel like their own minigame when it was just nice to be able to decorate your condo, it feels like now people are spending 100's of hours making weird shit for me to run into.
Obviously, its a matter of opinion. People will say its great that you get that much creative freedom. I agree, but I also think the old system where I didn't have to run into Furry shit + loli porn was pretty great for me.
Sometimes I still hop on the empty Lobby 1 reunion server to remember how much fun I used to have. Even my friends think TU is shit and they've had zero interaction with GMT so they clearly don't have a nostalgia filter like I do.

Also, just an extension of my previous comment. I've wanted to make a video like this for so long. I'm glad you did.
I think many other people are finding this video in a similar way to me. I just searched for old GMT videos because I got nostalgic.
I'm glad this video was made just because I knew nothing about all this behind the scenes shit. This game will never be finished.

Excellent video. I never got to experience GMT in it's heyday, but as a kid I watched videos about the mythical (at least to a console gamer) Garry's Mod, & eventually I had gotten a laptop that could play gmod before the end of the toybox, playing through the gmod 13 beta. I purchased TU back back in 2019 after reading up on GMT, & having no frame of reference to how good it could have been. What I did have was memories of running private server's in gmod with friends 2012-2015, & for the time being, TU was almost close to being able to achieve that with a lot less technical know how with setting up servers, my more knowledgeable friends setting up said servers. I hadn't the slightest clue of the broken promises made during development, & while I do enjoy the game for what it currently is, I was soon to be experiencing the unfortunate feature creep that I'm sure most GMT veterans would witness.
I regularly kept up with the game's development after purchasing the game, because at the time, my internet connection was incredibly slow, it was one of two games that I played at the time. I have sunk more hours than I care to admit here, because even before having watched this video it feels almost embarrassing with the way the game currently is. Despite that, the game taught me just how complex game design could really be, much like how garry's mod changed my perspective of video games from going from objective to objective, frag to frag, & more about how it's a collection of assets, textures, scripts, animations, models, and all the code that goes into making a video game.
I used Blender for the first time since I had installed in years ago as a kid, with the intention of using it, but not really knowing where to start of having the attention span to sit down & make something. Too busy selling drugs on rp_downtown_v2, probably. Years later, with more free time, after learning how to extract some of those models I had spent years collecting from my time playing gmod, & in roughly 40 hours of tinkering with the software, cobbled together a few models, rigging them to the incredibly simple skeleton. Fun fact: Half life 2 models have more bones than the TU skeleton has. The game gave me an appreciation for just how complex it could be for even modeling alone, but I stopped pursuing that avenue purely out of disinterest. Despite that, I had a horribly uncanny model I had to enjoy the game with, & over the course of having played the game, I had heard whispers in the grape vine that the lead dev wasn't necessarily the nicest of people.
While I have had fun on the game, it lacks some of the qualities you'd expect in other social games. I was aware that it had kickstarter funding. I didn't even pay it much mind, occasionally seeing 'Backer' tags on players while roaming around the plaza, the few times there were people to populate it. Some time around 2020 is when I saw a 'Patreon' flag, & I had a couple of questions. If it wasn't for the snails pace that the game was going as it was, having missed their estimated deadlines for updates by several months, all under the guise of "We'll release it when it's ready." It wasn't until they raised the price from $16.99 to $22.79, scrubbing all mention of raising the game's price until the game left EA from steam's storefront, is when I started to dig around the Pixeltail forums & elsewhere.
Eventually that led me here after reading some threads on knockout, & having firsthand experienced the slow development & constantly shifting focus on the project, mac himself proclaims it's his life work & a passion project. Having heard the rumour that he had managed to get himself a house with the success of TU's launch, I found it suspicious that the team not only needed a kickstarter, but also monthly payments from fans who wanted to pour more money into what they hope is GMT 2. Beyond the fact that they keep shutting down fanmade projects, all made from modders who were probably INSPIRED by TU much as I had been before, all for the sake of squeezing out an extra penny is beyond greed. I would say it's disheartening as somebody who's tinkered around with textures & models, having spent thousands of hours playing fan made content, whether it'd be total conversion mods for HL2, or checking out one of the hundreds of thousands of maps on gmod. I've always appreciated mods of all sorts & flavours, & to see the developers take such a crass approach to modders who are more than willing to work with the team, & more than likely without pay involved, hosting those oh so expensive servers on their own terms, it's just not consistent thinking. They let their mask slip with GMT: 10 Anniversary reunion, it's pathetic to see how petty they will go with turning GMT into abandon-ware.
I probably wouldn't even be aware of this issue if it wasn't for the fact that they keep ping ponging ideas throughout development, spending more time with art passes than working on minigames & potentially things to do to make the game, well, a much more social experience. They prove this with their own dev log updates, which at this point feel as their attempts to prove that they're still working on the game, despite constantly seeing items that could either be 3 months away, or 2 years away, at the rate it's currently going. (The straw that broke the camels back for me was retexturing the foliage, completely unnecessary & looks worse than they were before. Can't even enjoy the palm trees, they look like plastic.) I estimate when they decide to stop milking the EA title, they'll further increase the price & then some. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt & assume they won't go back on their word on micro-transactions, but only hindsight is 20/20.
The game is at it's best when you're with friends, new & old, with real pieces of art onto the walls & actual care & dedication into making a unique virtual space, the few exceptions you can find condos that don't host questionable, & in some rare cases illegal content. A recent update added a warning before you go to search for other player's condos, saying that people, as you are on the internet, can & will put up whatever they want. They include instructions on how to report illegal content if you come across it, the fact that there has been instances where people have put up grotesque images, downloaded directly to your computer's register to render the image, & the lack of any real acknowledgement of a problem is deeply troubling.
Despite my enjoyment of the game & the fun I have had on it, I cannot, in good faith, recommend the game to anyone.
PS: Chimera is pronounced KY-MEER-UH. Fantastic video regardless, tomato tomahto.

@@urimaginaryfriend Normally I'm not compelled to write comments, as I stopped paying attention to them around 2012-13, due to the fact that you couldn't get any real discussion going on, and this video has deeply resonated with me, because as much as I want to love Tower Unite for what it is, the scatterbrained development cycle, I find it really difficult to recommend the game. I actually missed out on GMT, mostly playing obscure gamemodes, sticking around those for the community, most of which I'm still friends with to this day.
Something possessed me to (beyond the intoxication from imbibing), but Garry's Mod really changed my perspective on how video games actually worked. After having read through the knockout thread only after having watched this video, I can only wonder what's in store for the future of GMT & TU as a whole.
As somebody who only recently figured out how to run source servers (after 12 hours glued to my screen) to play Jazztronauts for the first time, I should be thanking YOU for taking the time & working out the logistics to getting a GMT server up & running. Hope you have a fantastic day/evening!

@@MrSethKS17 you as well! its always interesting when you're first getting into source, and GMod especially can really make it fun and wonderful to discover, as the possiblities in it while not limitless are really astounding. even now its honestly incredible gmt got as far as it did, and while TU got much further it just doesn't feel as filled with wonder and comfiness. i wish you luck and fun with further exploring GMod :D

@@urimaginaryfriend The source engine has something about it that's really attractive to me moreso than any other game engine out there. It's got it's own soul to it, and I love everything about it, down from what it can simulate to it's quirks (cue soundclip of a ragdoll getting stuck inbetween closing double doors). I really do hope TU gets to a level similar to GMT, even though I personally feel it's got too far much polish (speaking from the way the game looks, as I find the games performance fluctuates heavily) for it to have the same level of character of what I'd imagine GMT had, regardless I still enjoy the game for what it is. Gmod still captures my attention with child-like wonder, and something like Jazztronauts inspires me to create something within source. If the GMT fan servers are still around, I hope our paths will cross at some point, I'll get you the GMT equivalent of the beer Barney owes Gordon. Cheers!

PLEASE, READ ENTIRE COMMENT - USE "READ MORE" BUTTON WHERE COMMENT CUTS OFF - NOT A TROLL, NO SUPPORT FOR MACD!
Dramas or not, I will continue supporting Tower Unite as a game, even if not the developers themselves. If the game was in better hands, it would really be a God awesome sequel to original. Even currently, we are still waiting for tiny things, and lag on minigames for a lot of people is unbearable. To the point, most of us have stopped complaining completely and just got used to playing like this. Their netcode is messed up, hence all the lag everywhere is what I heard a few times, though I couldn't confirm it if I wanted. Lobbies are... Well, they are not empty, that's for sure, but atmosphere is still lacking when people group up only with themselves in Casino, Arcade or other places. For condos, they are much more amazing now, and to confirm that Gmod Tower is still being cared about, maybe at least by some of the developers, would be easily the fact of rehosting Gmod Tower by original team until Tower Unite is finally released and that one of the condos you can buy is ENTIRE LOBBY 2. Also, I am not protecting people who are sick on mind and host illegal, disgusting or beyond disgusting stuff in their condos and I am not entirely clean as well - But I try to keep NSFW stuff out of my condos and don't feel good that other people do this - It simply makes me sad, rather than upset, angry or annoyed, that that's the community we have. I also attempt to understand people who are not into things that I am into, because the only thing I really like that some might find weird is fat furries or just bigger bodies, humans or anthro animals in general - Also no, I am not feeling embarrassed by revealing this publicly in RUclips comment. We are not supposed to be scared of people attacking us for who we are or what we like and prevent ourselves from sharing things, at least in a context. Anyway, yeah, I post warnings to say that sometimes it's better to save your eyes and stop your curiosity, though I feel it does the exact opposite sometimes.. I try to keep personal things separated so that no one has to always ram into them - They are walled off and protected from viewing by accident for those uninterested and they are barely just a bedroom part of my main condo for example, while rest of it... well, I try to make rest of it and my other condos to be generally as friendly and open to people who join as possible, and really still enjoy filling them with memes, references to older or newer games, sharing music I like on recently added physics DVD items that you yeet into media player to use. It's amazing. Lacking the atmosphere and with controversial main developer but still amazing. I only wish the game would be in better hands, that's for sure, because I read the thread myself before seeing this video and I won't be supporting people like mac if they do things that way.

This video deserves more views. I play Tower Unite all the time, and I believe every sentence and uttered word in this video is true things, and I didn't know basically most stuff said in here. I only had knowledge that Mac rejected a paid donation request or something of the sort 'simply' because he didn't feel like it. What a strange set of events, very rude. Huh.
There is many things I want to say here, in regards to the context and what's going on with Tower Unite in itself. I believe it is a underrated, thriving game as well. I don't believe it's dying in numbers, with an smart and funny community on the game and probably on the discord, although me being un-active in that. In many ways, it is such a unique and amazing game that I have been playing with friends.
This is coming from someone who has experienced Tower Unite, but hasn't experienced and played the original GMod Tower, or atleast I don't believe, although I did play a snit pit of a remake (Robokitty's I think) and the 10 anniversary one, because of my Australian friend who played the original GMod Tower and loved it endlessly to death. At the time of writing this comment, I don't believe he's aware of this drama or anything related, and in retrospect I don't think any of my friends that I play Unite with are at all. I want to concur the belief that Tower Unite is trying to develop as much as it can. It's a better way to socialize in some aspects than that of VRChat.
I said it and I said it again, I'm not against this game, in many ways people should support it for merely it's development, it has a great future going for it but albeit slow.
..Well, it is really an unpopular game, and that's what's causing this drama to be REALLY really unpopular. In all actuality it could really feel like you've been stabbed behind your back and lied to. It's so sad to see a game obscured within the depths of the Steam playerbase with an unfortunate creator. I'm not trying to say to support the dude, but I've met many cool people like Umbre and etc. (Umbre's a Ball Race god)
I'll probably get around to sharing this video with everyone and everywhere sometime. 4 hundred views isn't enough to express to a ongoing playerbase how wrong Mac's actions are.
    ..
I don't want to boycott Tower Unite, I really don't, but if this is heard around, I would just really want negotiation to be held about, though Mac probably won't settle it simply like that once that time comes.
    Safe travels.

I've only ever played tower unite but I want to understand who I support. MacD definitely jumped the shark with threatening action, given that plenty of the assets used in Gmod Tower did not belong to him or pixeltail. My guess as to this knee-jerk reaction is he probably thought the copyright of Tower Unite extended to Gmod Tower, they do not. The community was upset and rightfully so. Robokid's actions seem far more altruistic than Pixeltail's. MacD tried to take advantage of the GMT community to rake in extra cash. I have no room to comment on GMT compared to TU nor the actions of the MacD. I hope TU is a great game once it releases and I hope MacD has time to reflect on his actions and learns to improve. I mean he's using Garry's Trademark in the name,
Using an existing framework which is open-source...
All what he could have trademarked are the assets,
literally as a programmer i feel disgraced by people
like him and developing on open-source projects
for money then infringe another trademark and sue a kid who
literally took all the non-copyrighted assets which they used too
    and literally RE-WROTE all code.
By this logic Unreal Tournament should sue all FPS games,
and the makers of Pong should sue the UE devs for copyright infringement..
Like seriously how much of an half-ass does someone need to be to write literal LUA scripts with some basic webhooks
and call himself a sex-god of programming...
disgrace full of greed, i loved gmod tower not for the shitty coding but for the usage of
source engine in such an amazing way with bigger social aspect than vrchat or altspace could dream
    and it was before vrchat...
Literally from a business perspective he could easily sell this to another company or
literally live of donations which would make him 10x more..
people play gmod tower for the source engine which is amazing and doesn't
need much resources to run. yet they fucked it up.

Claiming they are money hungry is a stretch... they started the game through an Indiegogo campaign only to charge it at a mere $15 (not to mention various sales throughout its lifespan.) They've now increased the price and opened both a Ko-fi AND Patreon. I can't say anything about who he is as a person and how he's treated people in his life because I'm not him or them but what I can say is the entire business side of this drama doesn't seem to be one-sided to me.

Things like a kid re-writing the code and them advertising Tower Unite a lot in Gmod Tower confuse me. Just because you re-write code doesn't mean it's not stealing, hell even games like mobile Overwatch rip-offs get hit with lawsuits. As for advertising in-game, you mentioned how the fan made re-makes of Gmod Tower did their best to sell Tower Unite to the players but as soon as Pixeltailgames does it it's scummy? Just trying to iron out the kinks since it seems this entire comment section is onesided, I have to find some sort of balance, for my self at least.

@@kolul9191 I understand your point, and an indiegogo is fine for starting out a buisness, but having a pateron for a paid product after the fact just screams either them running low on funds or squeezing their playerbase for every dime. And while those overwatch ripoffs get sued for having overwatch assets (e.g) models, materials and such, All that was used on robokid's server that were reused assets were avaliable to the public and could of been used by anyone. The advertising done by the fan remakes weren't as everywhere as the real one. I swear, they'd change every texture to a link to tower unite if they could. Every webpage/screen and large surface pretty much had an a advertising link on it, ontop of the constant chat spam... and that's ignoring the fact how extremely unstable and borderline unusable the server was compared to the fan projects. It's clear with hindsight that the reason the server was in such a sorry state (and delayed waaay after it's actual announcement date) was just to try and get heat off themselves from taking down robokid's server.

@@yske3604 The overwatch rip-offs used none of overwatch's assets but solely modelled their game to look like it (ex. similar abilities, map layout and UI, which all would have been from them looking at the game and basing it off of what they see.) MacDGuy could be money hungry but I personally just can't see it, I remember worrying about the price of the game thinking they would eventually shut down because they didn't have enough money. Either way, for now, it's kind of impossible to prove one side or another since we have no way to know what kinda money he's sitting on. I get that excessive advertising is annoying but hey that's just the modern world (also the whole video ad could probably be removed, I think the poster advertisements are quite enough). Although I agree the devs could be more community-driven with a more polished, playable GMT and I don't think it was nearly as good as they could have made it, they've entirely shifted their focus to TU (it seems they really need it seeing how slow they update the game).
I'm a strong believer that if Tower Unite never released I would have probably forgotten the name "Pixeltailgames" years ago. When Tower Unite first came out I was absolutely furious I was going to lose all of my progress. Thankfully the game has improved and is still improving to this day, I tried the Gmod Tower remake server a while back and I just couldn't play for long. To me it's nothing compared to Tower Unite in terms of quality, Nostalgia on the other hand? That's a whole 'nother story. Back then school wasn't stressful and all I had to think about was if my friend and I we're going to play Virus or UCH. Not to mention the friends I've introduced to the game who have dumped hundreds of hours with me keeping the whole experience interesting. Anyways, thanks for the perspective, maybe I shouldn't support MacDGuy directly but it's still important to think about the other devs, but at the end of the day, I'm just a gamer playing what I find fun.

@@kolul9191 Also while Overwatch has unique stuff that /maybe/ they could sue under, Gmod tower isn't the first of it's kind, and it's literally called "garry's mod tower", which isn't copyrightable (but they did try). A majority of the assets are taken from other games, the only real thing they have a basis to sue on is the code, which as we've talked about was original, so they really had no leg to stand on.

@@yske3604 Do I get it right, you're talking about gmt:reunion?
I think that as devs vastly shifted their focus to TU, gmt:r is not is something like a real game anymore. They don't plan on making any big updates and such, and I feel like its purpose now is rather being somewhat like a museum. I also felt that it's obvious as the TU is kinda continuation of GMT, so would be strange to see them now starting to work on them both like on separate games.
So the ads in GMT:R are there because they want to give everyone huge hint thay it's not a living and growing game as before, coz TU is now instead.
So I never felt like those ads were bad, and I'm telling this as a person who really dislikes the moral principles on advertising in the world nowadays
But also wow, I wasn't there when a 30 sec ad was popping up on every join, and I also met games working when I came to look at it (at least ball race, source carts and mini golf did)
