I've always appreciated the 5 series. I just don't like it when there's one hiding behind a road sign with a radar gun on the A59.
Hahahha
Air leaks out from the air suspensions. Otherwise OK although quite rigid car.
@@mikkokarkkainen2807 That's one thing I'd avoid on any future car purchase. It just doesn't seem worth it when the system needs repair.
@@mikkokarkkainen2807 🤥
Don't drive too fast and hidden 5 series BMWs with radar guns are not a problem. Simples.
Imagine when the next gen 5 series ends up getting that horrific grille that's on the 3 series now. This might be the last decent looking 5 series for a while
You could be right. It might be EV only too
Thats not going to happen. BMW knows their markets. 5 will never be as bold as the 4 series.
@@Pumphyb70 You think so? I think they will do it to the 5
@@Jesus_Iced nah the grille maybe will be wider, but not as big or bold as the 4 series. Probably more like the 3 series look. The 5 is a very conservative executive car, but hey you never know eh👍
@@Pumphyb70 wouldn't tempt them mate.
The only certainty in the world right now is:
The next vid starting with “alright guys, how’s it going, welcome back” 🤣
I'm going to change that on the next one just to annoy you

At least in NY, this car is literally everywhere. No matter the median income of an area, you're bound to find a 5 series
Thats interesting. Makes sense though
@@HighPeakAutos yes Matt he is right. Upstate NY here and I have two 5 series in my neighborhood alone, which is about 10 houses total haha

Love My F10, was lucky enough to get the 530d it is brilliant!
It’s always refreshing to watch your channel. You are honest , friendly , just an all round decent person and it’s enjoyable watching you. So many other channels are just full of bull shitters , pretending to be living the dream with fantasy cars, and all they are fakes who own fuck all. So glad you stick to your principles and live in the real world. Keep up the good work
Always. Thank you
Hi Matt, wanted to say thank you for your reviews, advice and guidance. I started watching your channel when I advertised our VW California for sale as it was time to get a euro 6 car. I fancied a 5 series touring and just picked up a gorgeous G31 530d today! I’ve only got 4 of your videos left to watch so I’m looking forward to where you go next. I’ve learned a lot from your content and really appreciate what you’re doing 👍 Steve
Even though I'm not always fond of all the cars you review I watch your videos as I find your reviews honest and very down to earth. You're easy to listen to and very informative.
Keep it going. 👍
Great review, which couldn’t be more spot on. I have the 2018 xdrive M sport model in selenite grey. Looks absolutely great and drives fantastic. I opted for the smaller 18 inch alloy wheels, allows for a bit more cushioning for the pot holes on the Uk roads. Would highly recommend this car!
I must say I have never seen such a well educated, polite and even more importantly knowledgeable used car salesman. Most are just scamming people and know absolutely nothing about cars which is why I have always said its the easiest job in the world, I could walk into should the need arise, but you need to be at this guys level to earn good cash. Really enjoying the content and your honesty. Good luck with both the business and the YT channel 👍
Il be back in 5 years when these are in my price range 😂😎🤞🏼👍🏼💪🏼🤔😋😢
Always been big fan of the 5 series. Still a good looker too
I was sat relaxing on my night off with a bottle of Shiraz...just about to go to bed when this vid popped up , just had to watch it.
Thanks
Great review and I agree having had the f10 m5 for many years and now moved to the f90 m5 comp , if you wanted I’m happy for you to do a review of it , it’s been tuned aswell so full exhaust, downpipes and a remap so running around 800 bhp
Great review of the 5.....always a pleasure to listen and learn from you..... Keep up the great reviews
Another great review I don’t do bmws but I appreciate your point of view
Dads just got his retirement hes always had 5 series since the 90’s telling him buy one of these or the v90 which he also loves
I did the same.
I miss 3.0 engine, but in general V90 is great!
Cracking review. It looks like a perfect marriage of sensibility with just a touch of attitude.
Polished review as always Matt, well done!!
Great vid. I have a G31 M sport touring. And I total agree with you, its just a really good car. Had my fair share of blown A6 transmissions and Merc diesel Taxi E class rattles . And this seems to be the best made of the lot. There is not a single hard touch surface in the cockpit and everything just seems to be refined and then refined again. You didn't mention the Gesture control that the G30 came with. Not sure if it an option there in UK , but standard here in Australia. People think a 520d is too slow. But if you look at the stats its on par with s MkV golf GTI for HP. the 400 nm is just addictive on highway runs. You really don't need to do zero to hundred runs like a Tesla in this, you just drive and live with it. I did like you last F10 video. As you said this is the car you buy if you yell at the kids to turn out the bathroom light.;)
This definitely looks the part, As Matt says " all the proportions and angles are right "
Same can't be said about the new one
Another great review sir! Always enjoy your content
Amazing car, great review, as usual! Now, I’m following your channel for quite a wile now and I appreciate your opinion, therefore I decided to buy this “new” 5 series as a used one. Once again, thanks for your effort putting into your work, it all about passion. Cheers
Greetings from Austria 🇦🇹🍻
Despite you said you might not post this on ig I’m sure glad you did, much love from Barbados
Thanks for watching from beautiful Barbados
Can’t think of a better all rounder ever. Comfy, amazing to drive, plenty of performance even with the 520d. Looks classy or loud if you get the m performance kit
Excellent review as always !
Mine arrives next week and i’m watching every video i can in anticipation!
Enjoy
The one I’ve been waiting for! Having had the e60 and f10 5 series I’d recommend them to anyone (particularly the 6cylinder petrols). They’re the 911 of executive cars, slightly better each time.
It's a lovely car to drive my G31 520d M Sport but there are some small annoying things that you would take it for granted in a premium car. It's not easy to turn on the fog lights while driving (the steering wheel covers the switch), operating the back windows from the driver seat will make you hit the pillar with elbow, don't have a place to rest the right foot next to the pedal while the car is on cruise control on the motorway (other cheaper cars have that) and other few small things.
Your car reviews are the best on utube!
Brilliant i have been waiting for this review
I have a 640D Gran Coupe. I can confirm it is sensational. Just unbelievable value and performance. I had a 5 series previously. 👍
Great looking car 👍
it’s a heroic yet subtle looking car, everyone NEEDS a 5 series
It looks good but in fact is not particularly good
Thanks, Matt. In a previous BMW report I mentioned that I've never been a BMW fan. That report and this one continue to change my mind. Cheers, Ken
I'm not a BMW fan but appreciate some of their cars ...
You speak straight to the point. I subscribed because of that
Great video...I just purchased a brand new touring..mild hybrid diesel...👍
Had a 2021Model as a rental some weeks ago. It is a gorgeous car which feels great to drive. I think its 190hp is enough if you dont want to exceed 150kph very often. The 400NM of torque offer enough force to propell you to a Autobahn travelling speed quickly enough.
Still would want an 6 Cylinder just for the sake of it ♥
Exactly my point. I don’t care what most people do (buying the 2L). I’ve bought the 3L Xdrive and I AM very happy. The ultimate driving machine☺️
I could listen to you for hours, oops I said it. Thank you for another excellent informative, well presented video.
Straight to the point, I like it. I just watched 2 of your videos (f19-g30) and I already subscribed
Il like the exterior of the F10 but the interior of the G30 is just perfection
Thanks for subscribing
Well, that sedan look luxury. This is my dream car. Keep it up
Having had a 2 litre F11, 3 litre F10 and now a 3 litre G31 I can vouch for the fact that a 530 touring is all the car you’ll ever need, great cars. Good review👍
Great video of a great car. I’ve recently bought a new 530e PHEV and driven with care I’m getting over 100mpg I haven’t bought petrol since middle of March despite a few long trips.
Honest reviews like this are what really helped me put a deposit down on my 520D M Sport XDrive. Collecting mine on Saturday and can not wait!
And ? Still happy ?
@@Carlos-Rodrigues Extremely! The only thing that's bugged me the last 10 months is the number of times my vehicle has had a manufacture vehicle. I suppose these things happen and my local BMW dealer are really good at sorting this thing out painlessly.
Very informative. As someone of limited means, I've always been scared-off BMWs as being high-maintenance, this car seems perfect; I would like a quicker 0-60 time, but I suspect in reality it wouldn't be an issue.
BMWs aren’t high maintenance, unless you’re buying the Sports cars. The diesels are the ones to buy. You get good performance and they have robust engines
Yes! Got one!!!! Gunmetal grey...Best colour 😊
Good choice
Do a video on an X6 please. Had Two 5 series, and a 4 series recently, but went to an X6 30d M-Sport A Edition. What a machine the X6 is, i loved my 5’s but the jump up in quality on the X6 is tremendous. Keep up the good work👍

Great cars I have the 320Gt m-sport xdrive not everyone’s cup of tea look wise but I think it as that unique look , absolutely love it more boot space than the estate build quality is spot on it it really is like the 5 series everything you want in a daily driver ,
Keep up the good work Matt love the content it gets better and better ....
My Alpine white with cognac interior g30 520d hit 90k miles a few weeks back. No issues whatsoever, 0 interior wear… recently recalled for a egr cooler, that’s done. Love the car
Another great vid. I've been wanting an estate version for years, always loved them. I looked at one recently and was astonished at the physical size. I don't know if I've been going around with my eyes half open in the past but I may have to consider a 3 series because I actually found it quite intimidating. Or I might be getting old.
Not at all Neil, i do find the 5 series and the E class intimidating in size. I have an old B6 Passat estate and the difference is measurable. I got scared when lifting up an E class on axle stands - that's never happened before!
Having just bought my first ever BMW, a 530e, I can say they feel bigger to be in and drive than to look at. They're deceptively large. I am now petrified of car parks.
The best 5 series has gotta be the E39 M5 :P If you get a chance a vid of that would be much appreciated.
Brilliant review as always thank you
Well decorated review am probably getting mine next week
EGR valves and EGR coolers are made of chocolate on these B47 engines, we had a few partial fires at BMW dealer I worked at even on G30s. Lovely cars but not very well built these days. Thrown together with little care. That goes for all premium brands apart from lexus..if you can call them premium? idrive is the best infotainment system you can get, so easy to use.
Its amazing that this EGR issue from the N47 engine is still around.
@@BaybieK even worse on B47 but the chains last longer on the B47.
Does it affect B57 aswell?
@@espritv12 I've never known it no the B57 seems trouble free
Just dump the car before it gets too high mileage
I'd be intrigued to see you review a 3 series GT given they are about the same size due to the longer wheelbase and look pretty similar inside.
Bought my first new 5 series in 1990! It was ahead of the game then. Ran it alongside a 735i which I loved.
Good choice!
Australian police just switched to these a few years ago but the 530d with the 3.0L diesel. They previously used locally built Holden Commodore (GM) and Ford Falcon police cars each with either V8's or Turbo V6. These are great because they use half the fuel, which makes up for the more expensive price.
I have always bought Mercedes but must say this car looks beautiful.
Great review, thanks. A 530d is possibly the best all round car in the world. Audi's A6 and Merc E are great cars in their own right, but the 5 series has always been king of it's class for me. I always wonder, how on earth they can improve it with the next one. They usually nail it every time.
I agree. Fast, comfortable and does 6-700 miles between fill ups.
@@terryo5672 I wish I'd have gone for a 530d and not a 530e. Hybrid, whilst in theory is great. In reality a pain....
@@elthamlad468 I had the Merc 350e as a company car and I averaged 34 mpg as I had no charge facility at home. I got rid of it and I get 50 average with a 3d 5 series and it is very fast when needed.
@@terryo5672 I've reset my trip computer. I'm currently showing 28.5mpg and I don't drive fast
Great review Matt, keep them coming buddy! 😎🙌🏼
Great video! I love my 2019 Touring 👌🏽
Can you do an update on the Bentley Continental please?
I think you meant an old E Class diesel. Would be nice to see a review of a new E Class. Keep up the good work
I've had the newer W213 E220d since 2016, and I agree, the newer engine is quiet, 194bhp and excellent economy. When I bought it I test drove the E Class, the XF and the 520d back to back, and haven't regretted my choice, 60,000 miles and still smiling
@@philcrockford5534 The W/S213 is a stunning car. My dad has had one for about 6 months and it's just gorgeous. In fairness to the BMW though, the engine is just a bit quieter than the 220d (not by much, but when you start revving it out) and it did feel a bit lighter on it's feet than the E class.
Aftermarket support also seems to be better on the BMWs, lots of retrofits available - less so on the Mercs. All in all, both excellent cars.
My heart says XF, but i just can't bring myself to commit when both the BMW and Merc are much better cars.
@@timprice5 I loved driving the XF ( felt it handled better than the BMW at the time) but back then there were loads of reports of touchscreen problems with the updated Meridian system. They've probably sorted it now. Ended up finding an ex-MB dealership managers AMG Line in silver, with 3000 miles, black Nappa, panoramic, Burmeister stereo upgrade, turned dash trim and rear climate control. Yeah I'd love to try a XF next time but this will keep me happy for a while yet!
@@philcrockford5534 that's a great spec. Ours is an S213 on a 68 plate AMG Line Premium (not plus) with pan roof . No nappa, multibeam or burmester but not priorities for my dad.
Couldn't argue at around £25k just over a year old with 11k miles though.
Love this car. After coming from 2 f10s which I loved too. Mines a 2.0d also and I think it's plenty fast..was considering and 2016 640d instead but glad I stuck with the 5. It's my 3rd carbon black, gorgeous colour but man it's hard to keep clean. Great video. 👏👍
Cracking review again, really enjoyed that. Had a number of 3 series, saloons and tourers, but never a 5. Keep posting mate 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks, will do!
I drove 5-6k miles in an F10 and did similar mileage in a G30, both 520d models. You echoed my words by saying that the G30 was slightly better in ever aspect. Both were superb and despite the comparative lack of power on paper, they were great in the real world. The 6 Series GT was another BMW that impressed me a lot more than I expected it would.
I agree
Drove one in 2018 ... Looking at it i thought WHAT'S NEW ?!but after 2 min of being driven I thought - why buy a 7 series?! The suspension is just amazing. Driving it - so nice, comfy, all the power you need on a day 2 day basis. Best 5 series ever. The only one I would pick over this is the 530e or 545e 😍
if you check price, they are similiar for used once... but maybe maitenance is different story :)
@@bazosmarek7981 spare parts have become stupid expensive. A headlight for a VW Arteon €1600. Bmw ... Scary stuff.
@@borisyurinov4822 yea that will be probably similar on every new car with fancy headlight. Thats why I keep telling myself why I still have e39. And why should I keep it that way. Because there is nothing wrong with that car.

There’s also the M550d xDrive which has 400 horsepower, but isn’t available in the UK.
It's been discontinued since the LCI.
The M50d X5 has also been discontinued since September 2020.
The 5 series has everything. Best car on the road imho.
Nah Lexus ES is better
@@maxmorris4562 Unfortunately, I'm going to disagree. The Lexus ES is a gorgeous and desirable car, but it's not quite as good as the 5 Series for a couple of reasons:
1. At this age, they're all hybrids. I love them, but they are substantially more expensive - I mean £8k more min.
2. They're slower, longer to 60 and top speed.
3. Boot space - you're down nearly 100 litres.
4. Tax, the Lexus is cheaper - by £10. Give me performance and lower maintenance costs any day.
@@Hustwick Lexus ES wins in comfort and refinement, 5 series better at pretty much everything else.
Lol its a piece of junk
I have a G30 530d xDrive. I love it. It’s, more than quick enough (0 to 62 in 5.4 seconds) and amazing on fuel.
I was working for BMW when they launch this, and amazingly forward in an amazingly conservative way
One of the last good looking BMWs on the road now.

Thank you so much for the review mate. I was really close to go get a decent F10 with around 12-13k ish. But now you got me thinking.. why not throw another 2-3k and get the G30. Everything looks much better especially in the interior.
Is it worth getting a G30 with 60-70k for about 15k ish ? Cheers
Thanks. This always the trouble when looking for cars. You can keep adding a couple of grand until eventually you're way over budget. If you can comfortably afford a G30 then I would definitely recommend. If not the F10 is a very good option
Did you manage to find the F10 for 15k ish?
@@MrUnknown2105 even better, last April I found an 5 Series G30 2017 with 72k on the clock for 14.5k. Now it’s worth 17-18k lol

5:07 ”Richard, do be careful parking the car in front of the manor house. Yes, park it next to the Mercedes, so it looks better! My Sheridan would be appalled if you’d park it next to that awful old car! Mind the horses dear! Sound the horn!!”
JDM cars actually outlast any German cars. Especially Toyota and Honda. Bulletproof cars.
Fantastic car Matt. Like this car. The B57 3litre straight six is truly sublime to drive and good economy, fantastic in touring guise too 👌 perfect cruiser
Great motor, I love them. And another great video. Thank you sir!
The reason I drive BMW is you never have any bother shifting them on when your done with them there always a buyer
Exactly correct. I went and bought a Mazda CX-5 , and now I wish I was just patient enough to get a 5 series instead.
I think the estate versions look more classy compared to the saloons. But at least the saloons look better than the GT hatchback which looks just plain wrong.
Picking mine up tomorrow 😊
Great video as always Matt, thanks again for your efforts 😊👍🏼👏👏👏👏👏👏
My pleasure!
Cup holders?! You never mentioned the cup holders, surely that could be a downside?!?! 🤔😂🤣
Owned 2 BMWs so far, and they’ve never once let me down. You’re right, If you look after them you can’t go wrong. Been starting to think about my next one and I think this video just convinced me it’s a 5 series. However I think the 530d is the sweet spot on one of these.
The 630d GT is the way to go!! If you like that weird aesthetics of course 😁
Had a 530d GT on loan once and it felt like an absolute tank. Do love the look of 6 series GT though, and you can pick some up at a good price now.
530d definitely. I’ve had a 520d and 530d back to back and averaged 43 and 40mpg respectively over 3 years of ownership with each. For the extra oomph the 3 litre gives you its a no brainer.👍
Can’t speak for the 5 series, but the 3 series I drove was very unreliable
@@matthewsmith2787 I have a 5 series, not a cheap car to maintain and like you I have found the reliability disappointing, my wallet agrees 😑

Don't know why I clicked so fast🤣
All what you say is true. But you don’t need a car to go 140, if I won the premium bonds I’d be tempted. However I’d pick a mondeo, odd I know but all you need is there. Just think of who you could help with the difference?
Credit where it’s due, here. Your videos and commentaries continue to improve with each and every offering - the ‘go to’ source for any would-be car purchaser or, like me, enthusiast. Dunno how you do it - bit of BMW DNA?
I agree with you. The one irritant is the size of the door pockets. perfect for child sized hands. Other than that 10/10 and a joy to drive.
