  • On this 44th anniversary of my father’s passing, we’ve put together a short piece directed by John Alan Thompson about my father’s belief in humanity and togetherness called "One Family”. In 1964, my father was challenged to a fight that, although he won, changed his perspective and approach to martial arts and life. Listen to my mom tell the true story of the Bruce Lee Oakland Show Down and tap into the self-actualizing and unifying energy of Bruce Lee as we remember him now and always. Enjoy the film! And, love you, dad! xShannon

Bruce Lee, his philosophy, it made a deep impression on me.
I'm not a genius, but, what is clear is, his knowledge was of the highest degree.
The worlds gone crazy they say, it's getting worse day by day, many people seeking the truth which can set them free or turn them into the Zombie.
So, who's to blame? this man or that man? Christianity or Islam?
Put that aside, and believe in Bruce's belief in humanity and togetherness called "One Family”
Bruce Lee's legacy will live on forever.
    Rest In Peace Mr Lee.

I've read the Wong Jack Man account of how the fight happened. Here's why I don't believe it should it matter:
    1. Its been said that the fight took about... 20 minutes or so from the WJM side? Ok, even professional boxers today don't fight that long without taking many many breaks between rounds and thats if they survive to "go the distance" as they say. There was never any mention of "rounds" from either side. Maybe if there'd been absolutely no physical contact between either side but then it wouldn't have been a fight at all.
    2. WJM said he didn't use his kicks during the fight because he was afraid of killing Bruce with them. Okay, wasn't he supposed to be a martial arts master or at least an expert? What master doesn't know how to control their attack power and placement so their moves will only be debilitating and not lethal?
This is why I believe the Bruce Lee version of events instead of the WJM version

Infinite Ronin yeah. Sounds like he was making excuses on why he didn't get in a good kick. Plus a shaolin trained kid can kill you with his bear hands. So regardless if it was a kick or a punch, a trained Shaolin monk could easily kill you with his hands or feet. Sounds like some bull from a man who's goal wasn't to destroy Bruce physically as much as to destroy an up and coming martial arts star's reputation. If you won the fight keep it at that. It's usually the loser who goes barking to everyone else about how they won or fought to a draw.

    • @ninjanizzle
      @ninjanizzle 7 лет назад +28

Infinite Robin which account did u read? the bruce lees toughest fight article? if so i suggest u also read showdown in oakland by rick wing, which is far more detailed on the matter. before simply believing 1 side theres a lot of points to consider.
      1. bruce lee himself never said the fight was 3 mins, in fact he never gave a time for how long it was. if it really was only 3 mins i dont see y he would scrap and alter his entire fighting style because of that. 3 mins is only 1 round of boxing after all. bruce was the first to rush and print an article on the fight, even tho both parties had agreed not to talk about it publicly. in 1965 david chin and wong both replied in the chinese pacfic weekly to bruce lees initial article about the fight. both of them said the fight was 20 mins long and a draw. wong also said he trapped bruce in a head lock during the fight, but chose to let him go without hitting him with his free hand. wong also said he wouldnt reply again in the paper, but was willing to fight a public rematch. bruce never replied.
      2. wong obviously didnt feel he needed his kicks so y take any risks?
      3. linda lied about the cause of the fight, it was never about teaching non chinese. she "presumed" this was written on an ornate scroll but theres no proof. theres actually proof debunking it, as T Y Wong and Lau Bun both taught non chinese students at the time. they were the 2 main kung fu teachers in san francisco. there were others with non chinese students too. david chin also helped write the challenge letter, and he said there was nothing about that in there. bruce confirmed it was a letter too, and not an ornate scroll. he showed the letters to the chinese pacific weekly when interviewed, there wasnt a peep about racism. u also wont find 1 place where bruce said it had anything to do with race. that is a bold faced lie. bruce was challenged for disrespectful remarks he made during a demo at the sun sing theater. he issued a challenge to all in san francisco and wong simply accepted it later.
      4. linda and bruce both lied about the fight. bruce said he beat wong black and blue so badly he skipped work for 3 days. in reality he returned to work the next day with only a scratch above 1 eye. this was confirmed by ming lum, who was a highly respected member of the community and a mutual friend of both. linda said bruce pounced on wong and pounded him in the face until he gave up. if that actually happened his face surely would have more than 1 scratch on it the next day. david chin and william chen both denied that happened too. they also denied wong ever turned his back or ran during the fight. during the fight wong struck bruce on the neck with his hand, this left a bad bruise which was seen later by 1 of lees students(joe davis).
"Joe Davis (b.1937), now a grandmaster of Kajukenbo and one of its highest ranking members, verified the effect of Wong's strike on Bruce. Not knowing the exact details of the fight, he related that he had always believed that that Wong must have kicked Bruce on the neck, judging by the large size and look of the contusion. He said, "Bruce had a long bruise on the left side of his neck, and for many years I thought it was the result of a kick. Jimmy made it known to us (the students) that we were not to mention it nor ask about it."
if a simple hand strike did that much damage imagine what wouldve happened if wong used his kicks, which r 70% of north shaolin.
u never hear anything about this in the lee accounts, so it becomes obvious they didnt give a full account of what really happened. in 2005 a man from their own camp named george lee said he was actually outside the room with linda. he was armed with a handgun just in case things went south. bruce sent her out before the fight started as she was pregnant. this sounds reasonable, also y would someone from their own camp lie? so if linda was outside shes not exactly the eyewitness she claimed. even linda changed her story yrs later saying "There was very little combat or connecting blows. Nobody got banged up, there was no black eyes or anything like that." in her first account she said "But Bruce pounced on him like a springing leopard and brought him to the floor where he began pounding him into a state of demoralization." both of her accounts contradict each other in many points. they even contradict accounts by bruce.
5.also privately bruce seemed to tell the truth to his close friends.
"In a letter written from Bruce Lee to Jimmy Lee on August 7, 1965, a few months after the fight, he wrote "As forthe "runners" gung fu school, it's just another waste of time with a little bit more to offer ---- calisthenics! The more I think of him to have fought me without getting blasted bad, the more I'm pissed off! If I just took my time, {but} anger screwed me up --- that bum is nothing!"
he later confessed to Dan Inosanto "I was tired, Dan, I was so tired I couldn't even punch him."

It was multiple web pages I read a while back. I didn't think I was going to be debating about it so I didn't consider recording the sources. I may not have delved in the greatest depth possible, but I don't think its fair to say I "rushed". I did look at both sides or at least tried to at the time, which is more than what most can actually say. Misunderstanding is not the same as disregarding or ignoring. Now for the points themselves.
I, nor did this video unless I totally missed it, said the fight lasted 3 minutes so I don't know how that came up. I know in real fighting, actual fights don't last that long with fists or with weapons. Movie myths make it seem fights last that long, but in real life, fights tend to be over in seconds or minutes, especially fights where anything goes. And by "minutes", I mean 5 tops. Definitely not anything resembling 10-20. I wouldn't believe any real street fight went on that long just by pure logic and experience unless the combatants were truly superhuman and everyone knows Bruce wasn't that at the time. Hyper talented, yes, but not super human. That was later.
I don't usually ask questions like this but are you martial arts experienced? Boxing even? When you're throwing many blows and running around and dodging, 3 minutes is a VERY long time and we have to think that this fight took place in the 60's when extreme fitness for combat was barely a fetus. Conditioning and stamina to go more than 3 minutes for a street fight, much less 20 wasn't really in existence. I'm not saying the fight only lasted 3 minutes. I'm saying I find it near impossible to believe it went for anything resembling 20. Thats the stuff movies are made of.
If Bruce was challenged for teaching non-Chinese, he could've felt he didn't have anything more to defend for winning the fight except continuing a feud with potential stipulations that he didn't feel he had to defend anymore. Indeed, he would've continuously put it at risk if he did for something he successfully defended already. What would be the sense in it if that were the case?
The point I made about the kicks wasn't about what the point or necessity in using them. I was saying that Wong claimed he refused to use them out of fear of killing or permanently injuring Lee and that I find that an unbelievable, ridiculous thing to say from an expert. Even an intermediate martial artist can understand how to hit with control in their attacks. Yes, accidents happen, but if you're fighting for your own safety, which all accounts say was going on as far as I'm aware considering how aggressively Bruce attacked Wong, one would think Wong would open up if nothing other than to defend himself against an opponent even he claimed he didn't know was going to attack him so heavily. Wong's side claimed he was just going in for a kind of rough spar, not a true blue fight where they were going to get themselves seriously beaten down. And you want me to believe an expert in self defense wouldn't defend himself against someone that clearly was trying to hurt him even if taken by surprise? Yeeeeah... no.
I will admit the racism was a key point that had me doubting Bruce's side of the story, though perhaps you could account for what Linda just said in this video as the events that led to the presumed isolationism of their martial arts techniques?
Still, it doesn't refute the other unlikely points I've argued towards regarding the fight itself. Fighting for 20 minutes straight? No breaks? Like I said, even boxers don't do that and its no picnic for them even having breaks and all they use are their fists.
Also, another big problem that, that I will admit goes both ways, is that each set of people telling the story are supporting exclusively whose ever side they're associated with. When it comes to the facts, everyone could be making up anything. Thats why I tried to associate my original argument with things that could be construed as most unlikely or not.
Put it this way: The open challenge Bruce made? True. But was it the reason? Hearsay. Chinese community sending a challenger for Bruce teaching non Chinese? Hearsay. Even the accounts of injuries and such is pretty much hearsay. Thats why I'm focusing on key things regarding the fight itself, which is actually all I'm concerned with. I don't care much for character assassination because there's enough on both sides for that.
Another thing I find kind of funny is how its said Wong barely speaks about the fight. Well, if Bruce broke the agreement to not talk about it, why would Wong be held to a broken agreement? He made a second challenge, you say, and the authenticity of the match, including his reputation was being smeared. So why didn't/doesn't he defend himself more against something like that? And if I'm correct, he's still alive today or at least definitely was well after Bruce died. Yet... only his followers and friends seem interested in telling his side of it instead of he himself. Rather odd there...
Again, if Wong can't control his attacks to the point where he's not even confident he can do it, I can't call his side believable. You don't need to be an expert to know how to non-lethally hurt someone and Wong, by all accounts was an expert. Yet, the account speaks as if his kicks can only be lethal or near lethal and he has no actual control over their power? Again, not buying it.
Ok, this is something else I hate to do, but the reality is you're citing a lot of quotes and information about claims of things you say are contradictions but you're not citing sources.
You're also stating a LOT of unnecessary information that largely goes off track of my original statements, none of which refutes the things I said. Again, you're trying to win this argument by character assassination, dodging the points that have been made largely of the fight itself. Yes, the things you've said bring questions to my mind, but the reality is that truth tends to be found by looking at the simple things, not the irrelevant things.
So let me give the simple thing as I brought up from the beginning. If you can explain this, I'll probably feel compelled to change my mind:
"How did the fight go on for 20 minutes?"
Almost everything I feel has been demonstrated and shown with all manner of real fighting shows fights don't last 5-7 minutes much less 20, even when the people are conditioned with todays knowledge and techniques in fitness where fisticuffs are involved and especially when there are no actual rules or breaks. No accounts I've heard said they really stopped and did "rounds". So everything you're arguing means little if you're supporting a story where a fight lasted that long.
So what I'm saying is, explain to me how the fight lasted that long just from a stamina/endurance standpoint alone when its almost never done even today and I'll be open to considering Wong's side of the story more. Otherwise, you're not actually defending the argument regarding the fight itself, but instead just trying to win the argument by going after the character of the individuals where almost everything that was said involves hearsay.
I didn't just consider one side. When I first heard that the story Bruce Lee might've lied about the fight, I was pretty broken up about it. But these points I've brought up, namely the time frame, don't make a lick of sense and have never been adequately refuted.

right, well again i would recommend u read the book showdown in oakland by rick wing. it is the most detailed account on the fight.
in lindas original account (from her book bruce lee: the man only i knew) she said the fight was 3 mins. u say u researched thoroughly, so u should already know this. i agree most fights dont last that long, but there r some that do. ive personally seen street fights last longer than 10 mins. theres a no holds barred fight documented in newspapers which went on for over 30 mins. "CHINESE PUGILISTS. A Mongol Pair Engage in a Sanguinary Contest" if u google that u will find the newspaper article for the fight. wong went into it expecting a spar, without intentions of harming bruce, which is y he initially tried to set rules before the fight began. so i think it got dragged on as he wasnt willing to land a crushing blow, while bruce was fighting all out. it seems wong was content to school him. wong was already a grandmaster while bruce hadnt even finished wing chun. given their vast gap in experience i dont think it unreasonable wong was able to control the fight this way. its not like they were standing toe to toe pounding each other. wong was using using footwork and the fight was moving all over the room. even the spectators had to move. also he says he had bruce in a headlock but not for how long.
yes i have trained in boxing and north shaolin, not that has anything to do with this. wat is ur martial arts experience? do u have any other utube accounts? any grandmaster of NS is going to have good stamina, as it takes a lot of energy just doing the forms. wong trained in NS since he was a young child, so i have no reason to think he lacked stamina. he did say he was tired, but not THAT tired, as compared to bruce who was physically exhausted. also bare in mind wong worked a full shift at a restaurant the same day, if ne1 shouldve been exhausted it shouldve been him and not bruce.
bruce was not challenged for teaching non chinese, linda nor ne1 else from the lee camp has ever shown proof of that. its a lie without proof. bruce never said it which speaks volumes. if bruce easily thrashed wong in 3 mins, then y wouldnt he want to repeat that in public? a public win over a grandmaster wouldve surely sped up his rise to fame at the time. his private comments make me think bruce knew wong was too experienced. if he couldnt batter him with handicaps how would he manage all out in public?
where r u getting that from. wong thought his kicks were too dangerous so he chose not to use them. the challenge was not for a no holds barred fight, but a test of skill. bruce declined rules and fought all out, wong didnt and kept his word. if wong hadnt defended himself he wouldve probably died that day LOL. bruce was going for eye gouges, throat spears and groin kicks for the whole fight. of course he defended himself. how else do u think he was able to escape with only a scratch? the fact he didnt throw any kicks under the circumstances show hes a man of his word too. if u were trying to kill someone in a fight and failed, but wound up subdued in headlocks, countered bruised and exhausted, u would probably scrap ur entire fighting system for something new too.
if ppl on wongs side r supposedly supporting him y didnt they say he won outright? william chen and david chin both said it was a draw, so ur claims arent entirely true. they cant make up the chinese pacific weekly articles, which r available for all to see as facts from the era.
the reason bruce made the challenge on stage was his show was going bad, the crowd was laughing at him. its well know he had a short temper, so he ended up saying things he probably didnt even mean. multiple witnesses confirmed this happen, even bruces lees student leo fong states that incident was the cause of the fight.
accounts of injuries from mutual acquaintances is not hearsay. wat reason would joe davis have to lie about his teacher getting bruised in the fight? y would a highly respected member of the SFMA like ming lum lie, when he was friends of both? ur trying to avoid dealing with this information as it proves bruce and linda both lied about the fight. even if u ignore those accounts, bruce himself said he beat wong black and blue, linda admitted yrs later nobody got banged up and there were no black eyes. so their own accounts prove they lied about the fight publicly. none of that is irrelevant, u just dont want to deal with it for some reason.
name the quotes u want sources for. some of them come from books from the lee camp.
y would he continue speaking about the fight when bruce is dead and cannot defend himself? he even took linda to court for trying to make him into a racist. wong answered bruce lees article when bruce was alive, he denied all lees clams about the fight. bruce never replied. so he didnt hold to that broken agreement. then yrs after that he did the bruce lees toughest fight article. finally he spoke with rick wing about it for his book showdown in oakland. according to wiki hes 76-77yrs old. u cant expect him to want to talk about a fight he had as a youngster forever. ppl mature. the only thing i think would be worthwhile now is a documentary on his life. i see nothing odd about that.
"How did the fight go on for 20 minutes?"
read showdown in oakland for the accounts of the other witnesses. i wasnt there so my opinion on how is irrelevant. im not going after the character, im pointing our clear contradictions in accounts coming from the same camp, or even the same person. if u keep telling a different story each time which 1 r we supposed to believe is true?
bruce never said how long the fight was. i have more reason to believe multiple ppl saying it was around 20 mins, than 1 person saying it was 3, especially when they apparently wernt even in the room. linda had books to sell and a movie deal in the works, shes not going to make bruce look bad. a longer fight makes him look bad. i find it more likely bruce was completely exhausted from a fight which lasted longer than 3 mins, than a fight that was merely 3 mins. when wong and david chin replied to his article saying it was at least 20 mins, y didnt bruce reply saying otherwise if they were lying?

Its the most detailed account on one version of the fight you mean.
I did not say I researched thoroughly. In fact, I said something near to the exact opposite of that. I said I researched both sides on many web pages essentially telling the same story but couldn't remember the sources. I don't know if I'd call that really thorough. Please don't put words in my mouth.
I find it hard to believe Wong was content to "school" someone that he didn't think he was going to be schooling. You're talking about him being surprised that Bruce was attacking him in a manner he wasn't expecting nor was called for. Normally, that means one would be alarmed because they don't know what they're involved in and would be fearing for their safety. It seems odd that Wong wouldn't be defending himself desperately because he was up against someone that was unexpectedly genuinely trying to hurt him. Now, if he'd gone in there thinking, "Oh, this guy might really try to attack me and be petty so I'll keep my guard up for it", then I'd be more willing to believe that but there's no indication that was what was on his mind.
All accounts I've heard on Wong's side either say he won by a little or it was a draw. Nothing says he beat Bruce with any equivalent decisiveness as Bruce's side claimed he did Wong. That means he wasn't good enough to "school" him. He was, at best, barely better. Not indicative of one that could or would just calmly dance around, particularly to unexpected aggression that put one's own safety in jeopardy to the point where he'd keep his consideration for his opponents safety. It simply doesn't add up.
Headlocks take strength and stamina to maintain and I would venture to guess that even if it wasn't held long, Bruce would've tried fighting out of it, taking much energy out of both.
And again, you're talking about someone content to keep going 20 minutes with someone that clearly wasn't interested in the same kind of rules and mindset of what they were doing presuming Wong's side is the true story.
      This is what I'm seeing:
Wong: We're going to have a rough spar
Bruce: I'm gonna kick this guys ass so bad it'll show no one should mess with me!
      (fight starts)
Wong: Whoa now! This isn't at all what we agreed to! ... ... ...But I'll keep going even though he's proving very dangerous to me in ways I didn't expect and he's being disrespectful to our agreement. I mean, I didn't expect this at all and I could lose my sight to those eye jabs, but whatever.
And they do this for approximately 20 minutes?
Wong had more than enough reason(s) to stop the fight and back off because Bruce wasn't even following what he thought was the arrangement. Wong's side tries to paint him as the mature, reasonable one, yet he allows a most unreasonable thing to start and continue for... what exactly?
I dunno what people you may know, but I know no one that would challenge someone else to what they thought was a spar, and then find out it was a real street fight and not say, "ok, whoa, this isn't what we agreed to. I'm backing out until we establish an understanding of whats really supposed to go down here." And if they don't, then you fight on their level for real cause now its just a real, illegal, assault at that point.
Plus, another curious thing. A rough spar doesn't need to be kept secret because its not even really a match worth calling a true test of ultimate skill that can be gauged fairly. Ego shouldn't even hardly come into play over such a thing. A real fight on the other hand is a true test of skill. So the claim that it was just a respectful bout to shut up a cocky kid or just see who was better doesn't really add up under those conditions. Why even the alleged need to secrecy on the matter? Seems kinda retarded to me.
I asked your experience because its easy for someone to make the claims you do without knowing what real fighting can involve stamina wise. And yes, you do have to have stamina for that stuff, but training in forms, even with weights, jump ropes, and all manner of things today still makes real fighting challenging because fists and feet are flying and dodging and jumping around and blocking all take a lot of stamina that just doing kata and shadowboxing doesn't easily account for. If I didn't say that right, I'm saying boxers and MMA/UFC fighters can fall apart just from exhaustion well before 15 minutes much less 20. And again, they have breaks every 3 minutes.
I hate to be the debating nit-picker, but you said Wong claimed he was tired but not THAT tired. Ok... I'm just not finding that plausible under those conditions.
And if you must know, I've mostly studied Tae Kwon Do and Jeet Kune Do for... 22 years? Something like that. Have a wide interest in other things, but no real experience beyond those two styles. Studied lots of fitness stuff too for combat strength, power, endurance, speed enhancement that I think has no real style association but the point is I'm not an amateur regarding the subject either. Far from an expert, but no amateur.
"Wong thought his kicks were too dangerous." Ok, you're not helping your argument because I'm saying thats stupid. His kicks COULD be too dangerous, but he should've been able to control their power and placement. And you said he was a grand master? I didn't even know he was that highly ranked and you want me to believe that he can't control something that even a high level novice can do?
It doesn't matter if he expected a real fight or a spar. He should be capable of using something without it being lethal. Nothing you've said refutes that, you're just repeating something already said that sounds like a garbage reasoning.
Again, you're supporting my argument. Bruce fought all out in a very dangerous way and Wong, not knowing what he was in for and being surprised by potentially lethal danger, responded by fighting sub-par. The last thing that does is make sense.
Or he didn't throw any kicks because he couldn't. You're telling your side of the story as if Bruce's side is impossible without actually addressing them equally. You're not asking questions that point out potential contradictions in logic to Bruce's account. You're just treating them as if they are a complete lie because thats what you have chosen to believe and don't seem willing to even open the idea that you could be wrong.
I'm willing to believe you're wrong, but everything you've said so far isn't something that can't be countered or questioned by the very things I've said and is worded as if you can only be right.
I can assure you that neither of us are "just right" for the same reasons we can't truly know if things in the Bible happened: Because we weren't there.
But you're approaching this as someone that is right and can't be wrong. Thats why your argument has holes in it that I'm able to address. You're not telling a side that is more likely than Bruce's. You're telling your side and arguing it as if I already believe it and you're clearing things up for me I don't understand.
Yeah... where was Bruce bruised again? Did you write in a previous comment that Bruce was bruised on his neck or did I just read that in another thing while re-investigating this?
Bruce was bruised on his neck in a way a student of his thought looked like it could've only been a kick from the size of it. Except... Wong didn't kick him? Not saying he didn't strike him, but he didn't kick him for sure. Wong made triple sure of that and has recounted it endlessly.
But thats another thing. So Wong wasn't supposed to be all pummeled in the face and only had a cut over his eye and went to work the next day...
But they fought for 20 minutes and I haven't really heard Bruce being particularly wounded either. So according to Wong's side, they fought for 20 minutes with Wong either barely winning or it was a draw, they're both exhausted, Bruce was really fighting like crazy and Wong was just maintaining a rough, but friendly spar despite that, and Bruce walked away with barely any marks on him after all that?
Another contradiction from what I know about sparring matches, even light ones. People tend to walk away pretty marked up even when wearing protective gear. Yet, I haven't heard anything about Bruce being strongly wounded, cept for that mark on his neck which I just heard about.
So a rare 20 minute battle where one was fighting with all he had and another unusually not fighting back just as strongly to save himself from an unexpected amount of aggression and both walked away relatively unwounded?
      WH-AAAAAAAT?!?!
Bruce didn't scrap his entire fighting system. He revamped it. There were plenty things that he kept from Wing Chun that went into Jun Fan and then ultimately Jeet Kune Do. Scrapping it isn't appropriate. More evolved it.

Bruce was 1/4 German via his Mother(Her Father-German)...... This got out and he was stopped from learning in the main Wing Chun classes (Many students complained).
Wong Shun Leung then became his instructor outside the group and William Cheung help with some training.
So Bruce himself experienced this prejudice because some of his own countrymen didn't consider him a full blood Chinese.

While I’ve mentioned Leo Fong’s version of what led to the Oakland incident-namely, practitioner David Chin tricking and goading the two men into fighting-I’d like to give my opinion on the fight itself. There’s an account I read a long, long time ago that I find the most plausible and believable-and unfortunately I have zero recollection of the source-but it said that, yes, the battle only lasted a few minutes like Linda Lee says, and from the get-go Bruce kept charging in Wing Chun-style with flurries of straight-line punches (otherwise known as straight blasts), and Wong Jack Man kept stepping and angling out of the way, throwing wide, looping Northern-style counters. Unfortunately, neither man could gain an edge because their opposing systems were simply canceling each other out. Until, that is, Wong connected with a long-range backfist to the temple! Bruce, who was notorious for his explosive temper, basically then went berserk with a windmill of wild punches that forced his opponent to not only retreat but literally start running around the room-again matching Linda Lee’s story-until they eventually locked up, wrestled around sloppily, and ended up on the floor with Bruce on top, punching and yelling at Wong to give up, which he did. Thus, what may have started as a Shaw Brothers showdown devolved into something out of an old-school tough man contest or an early UFC match or, at worst, a cringeworthy playground fight.
The reason I gravitate toward this version is because 1) the time frame makes sense: The 20-minute version doesn’t fly with me given Lee’s aggressive, finish-a-fight-in-SECONDS approach, and the fact that both men were not seasoned grapplers willing to roll around on the floor all day. And 2) a fight where you throw all your training out the window? That’s sobering. Whoever gave the account said there was agreement Bruce had the edge in physical attributes like speed, but they were negated by the mismatch in fighting styles; then he got hit, went nuts, and “won." NOT his finest hour, and certainly not the skilled, polished altercation either camp would go home bragging about. So the Little Dragon realized he needed more options in his martial arts toolbox; more control so he wouldn’t revert to some unsophisticated barroom brawler; more cardio because of how winded he got; and, most of all, he needed more ADAPTABILITY.
And that, in a nutshell, was the beginning of Jeet Kune Do…maybe. Memories of events being what they are, who knows? But like I said before, it’s fun as hell to talk about.

Very well put and most believable Mr. Wung. Almost matching Linda's account. if WJM was a master also as stated, I'm sure he connected on Bruce atleast a couple of times. I am the biggest Bruce Lee fan, but also realistic. I believe once Bruce got upset his well-known lightning quick punches most likely became almost involuntarily, resulting in too much for WJM to handle. I know BL studied some grappling techniques from the great Gene Lebell before they met in 1967, so when BL and WJM went to the ground this would have given BL the upper hand. I do believe he was extremely winded causing him to take out unnecessary movements giving birth to Jeet Kune Do

+SilentGamer i'm a big fan of Bruce Lee...but what you said is true...Wong Jack Man is not a villian like so many think...i made my own research on this controversial fight and i found what could be the true about what happens...first if have nothing to do with Bruce teaching caucasian...Bruce gave a demostration in the Sung Sin Theather in San Fransisco and made some comments that some ones that were there interpret as a challenge to then...and that"s why the fight happens...so they talk to their best man to represent then in the challenge and that was Wong Jack Man...a great Martial Artis too and a Legend in his own right...and Yes he challenge Bruce to a public match but Bruce never responded...not because Bruce was afraid of him because Bruce Lee never fear any man in front of him..but by the time Bruce was really busy with the Green hornet thing and his raising fame...but is true tha Wong Jack Man wasn't an easy opponent to him a give Bruce Lee a hard time...that's the reason why Bruce developed JKD...for me and what i have found in my research and reading accounts of the eye whitness that were there..the fight was more or less a draw.

I had a conversation with a former co-worker who's training at a Sanshou club connected to Cung Le, who she said has a connection with Wong Jack Man. Anyway, in talking about the Oakland fight, she said she was surprised it happened at all because, from what she could gather, neither Bruce nor Wong were "jerks," and yet each side almost always claims rudeness and disrespect from the other. I told her the only version I've heard that explains BOTH sides-and I've heard many, many versions-is from Bruce's martial arts buddy Leo Fong, who lays the blame of the fight squarely on the shoulders of David Chin, an associate of Wong's who also trained with Bruce in Oakland, is often mentioned in accounts of the fight, and who, according to Fong, just really wanted to see two highly skilled kung fu cats throw down. To that end, Chin started going to each fighter and stirring shit up: "Hey, Bruce, Wong Jack Man and the Chinatown sifus say you're a brash, young punk who shouldn't be teaching white dudes!" "WHAT?" "Hey, Wong, Bruce Lee says the whole kung fu community is a walking classical mess that wouldn't last two seconds in a real fight!" "WHAT?" In fact, Fong goes on to say that when Bruce figured out he'd basically been manipulated into a needless fight, he wanted to go after David Chin! Chin's disciples, of course, take issue with this story and-as is the way of these things-have supposedly challenged Fong, now in his eighties, to a fight of honor, but...who knows what the truth really is? It's all part of the legend of Mr. Lee and, as we all know, it's fun as hell to talk about.
    And before I go, here’s a clip of Leo Fong’s account: ruclips.net/video/Xwd3b8xi6Pk/видео.html

    • @The_Honcho
      @The_Honcho 6 лет назад +5

Rick Occonnell the reason you can tell it's bullshit is because any book about Bruce Lee or Jeet Kune Do one of the first things you learn is that Bruce created Jeet Kune Do because of his fight against Wong Jack Man. Mostly because he said it was dragged out longer and was tougher than he expected. He literally created Jeet Kune Do to end fights quicker because of Wong, that kinda disagrees about him easily winning in less than 3 minutes when in reality it was probably more like 5 minutes with both fighters giving and receiving proficient contacts with Bruce ending up the winner. But still regardless there ain't no way in hell that the fight went on 20 minutes with Wong winning but Linda's story is a little shaky as well.

Linda, Bruce and you were most assuredly ahead of your time -- apart from his avant-garde martial art philosophy, interracial matrimony wasn't recognized in America until '67 which came only some 3 years after you two tied the knot.
On this 44th anniversary of Bruce's premature departure, it's heartening to see you reminiscing and commemorating your once inimitable husband of 9 years, now held to be a pioneer of mixed martial arts and charismatic philosopher of all-inclusive humanity.
Bruce being Bruce, urban myths about him do and will abound; regardless, his legend will live on long after we are gone.

The story keeps changing . Now, it sounds like the fight did not take that long at all. Truth is, the fight went on TOO LONG. Lee was so disappointed with his Kung Fu and Wing Chun, he totally retooled himself. Hence, the birth of JKD.

    • @Tank1
      @Tank1 6 лет назад

it went on because Wong wasnt fighting, he was backing away and running away... the fight stopped a few times, theyd square off again and bruce would just throw hundreds of fast straight wing chun punches.. none of them really landing, he was wasting energy cause wong was running.... eventually bruce just ran after him punching him to the back of the head and wong fell over.. bruce got on top and asked him had he had enough, and wong said yes.... the probelm what bruce realised was,, wong wasnt even in his league he couldnt fight bruce, but bruce didnt finish him quickly, in his mind it shouldve taken 1 or 2 hits.... instead of thrwoing hundreds of punches as wing chun normally does,, its hard to land and takes to much energy..... so bruce figured wing chun alone just isnt effect enough.... which drove him to to learn every art he could, and fit what he found useful into JKD.... which is all about finishing people quick... intercepting attacks, like a counter but even quicker..... and finishing the fight with one hit....
every fight after that documented or whitness all last no longer than 30 seconds..... when the extra challenged him on enter the dragon... he supposedly threw one kick and the fight was over..

    • @joeygonzo

None of us were there, but the bottom line was that the Chinese martial arts community in China didn't like the fact that Bruce was teaching "African Americans," not just that he was teaching non-Asians. In China, schools were opened and closed based on the ability of the instructor and the acceptance by the Chinese martial arts community elders who were the "gatekeepers." If these elders who were the gate keepers said "you cannot teach here" then they would have someone come over and force you to close your school if you didn't listen to the warning. Since Bruce Lee didn't close his school. he must have been able to stand his ground and overcome the opposition from the gate keepers. This was even how martial arts was done in Japan and at some point in the United States during the early days when Karate and Tang Soo Do or Tae Kwon Do were first imported from Korea after the Korean and Vietnam War. If someone started teaching without permission from the senior Asian instructors, the teacher could have been challenged, and faced the possibility of having his school closed down. Then there were rival schools and rival systems that challenged each other. Some schools lost their students when their instructor got beat by a rival instructor. When I started training, one of the schools I was at allowed full contact and sometimes people got knocked down, knocked out, bloodied, etc. I even saw a filming of a black belt karate promotion where a guy got his jaw broken. So to assume that Bruce couldn't fight, didn't fight, and that he would have been allowed to keep his school open if he didn't meet the challenge successfully, just doesn't correspond to the evidence of how things were settled back then.

Well all we know is this, the whole reason they went to fight him was to stop him from teaching and yet he still taught. So that to me is a clear indication that Bruce won, he would have gracefully left and stopped teaching if he had lost, but no, they told him you stop teaching or we will make you and he said bring it and he kicked their asses so he kept on teaching.
