- What's happening, folks! I'm back with another a-ha reaction as we continue going through their 1985 album Hunting High and Low. And as you'll see, this song hit me very powerfully and might be my favorite I've heard so far (though I've been re-listening to "Train of Thought" and absolutely love that tune!). So join me and let's enjoy this one! Cheers!

This song had a guest musician playing oboe. It is one of those tracks that shows how albums used to be full of sleeper tracks that meant if you only heard the hits you were missing out big time.
Oh, I see! I thought that was synth-oboe but that's even cooler!
Hidden treasures. 🤍
Oh! Solo falando sério!? E corretamente!
I think this is my favorite a-ha song, it's absolutely breathtaking.
6:08 till the end...this is breathtaking!
What a song! What a delivery.Morten's performance still sounds magical. This is Eargasmic! He plays with his vocal range and spreads out all of its majestic colours. It's like shooting fireworks in the sky.So impactful..Twas such a good decision of Pal and Mags to insist on Morten as a lead vocalist before their big breakthru. It was obvious he had such a 'light' that could outshine and overshadow many other acts at the time in the pop music scene.
First time i heard them playing this live we got stuned!Morten's falseto led the song all way through the outro in repeat till fade..We just couldn't believe our ears!We were looking at each other thinking 'whaaat'?!!!
Like a fairy tale vibe. One of their best tracks
This is one of my favourites. I always related to that title and I've always said that this is the song I want played at my funeral. Brace yourself for the next one on the album...it's EPIC!
Essa canção do A-HA é uma verdadeira obra de arte !
Such a good song, when he goes even higher at the end it’s so angelic,
By the way the lead vocalist is Morten Harket
Magne Furuholmen is the keyboardist
Paul Waaktaar savoy is the guitarist
One of the best song ever made
I find that all Aha songs are brilliant, but this particular one is my personal favourite. Morten's singing voice is just phenomenal, and his vocal range is just incredible. Living a boys adventure tale really hits me emotionally at times as there's a kind of innocent feeling about it, and I get a bit tearful. I've become more empathic since both my wonderful parents have passed away, and I now live on my own. I miss them so much!! I often think of them when I listen to my favourite music.
Amazing song -Morten’s vocals 👌
Sweet sounding song with again beautiful vocals from Morton. His voice is amazing!!!
Thanks Matt…I’m glad you reviewed and loved this one, it’s a great favourite of mine as I already intimated. If you get a chance to watch the video of them performing live at the Royal Albert Hall in 2010 with Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra..when they performed their first two albums in their entirety…Morten’s singing this song was electrifying! As you seem to be working your way through HHAL I can’t wait now for your reaction to The Sun Aways Shines on TV, it was the song that really got me hooked and made me a lifelong fan when I first heard it in 1985. I still can feel the hairs rise on the back of my neck when I hear the opening bars, especially at a live concert. Also, just when you think the best of the songs are over the last one on the album will totally surprise you too…it’s called Here I Stand And Face The Rain…can’t wait for your reaction to it!
Right on, thanks for this awesome comment! And cheers, I'm especially keen to hear "The Sun Always Shines on TV" (which is a brilliant and intriguing title, I might add!) and "Here I Stand and Face the Rain" (ditto!). Also I'm a huge classical music fan ever since I was a wee tot (probably the first music I ever heard), so I'm extremely interested in seeing that performance with the Oslo Philharmonic. Will check it out after I finish posting reactions this morning. Cheers, appreciate you!
HISAFTR is amazing...and the way they play it live these days is even better! Number one song for me when I saw them a few months ago...totally hypnotic!
@@JesperHellvik Yes…I agree. Love the way it’s evolved into a prolonged guitar solo for Pal. I loved it when saw them live in Belfast at the very start of the HHAL tour in 2019.
@@marjoriemcbride6557 I love the new keyboard part that Magne has build into it.

The experts will correct me, but apparently this track greatly inspired Chris Martin of Coldplay as he listened on his Walkman!
Yep, it inspired him as the kid to have music band himself.
Yep.
If you listen to Coldplay’s song «Drinks on Me» (it’s a leaked demo of Hymn For the Weekend) in the end, after the drums end, and the singin stops at the last part, you can clearly hear the inspirations from Living a boys adventure tale. Even the oboe!
@@zfanc555now I realized why hymn for the weekend sounds familiar,

The outro sounds similar
You may recognise The Sun Always Shines on TV when you get to it, as it was another hit single but the non-single tracks on this album showcase so much more than the singles suggest.
Como todo lo que hizo A-ha , espectacular.
No final, Morten e Mags nos levam a outra dimensão...
Love this song 👌 Excellent vocals
Cool project! You'd definitely also enjoy our a-ha podcast "Ranking Highs and Lows" where we count down 147 a-ha songs from the worst to the best across six episodes. Can be found on all major podcast platforms :)
Pretty impossible task I would say.. 😮
@@lunalairTM It wasn't easy - but it wasn't hard either 😆 But it was a lot of fun. Hope you'll check it out and not give up after the first couple of disagreements with the list. The first two episodes can come off as somewhat harsh but it's all done with great love and affection for the band!
Definitely check it out! These guys are hilarious! All done with love. ❤
@@NoCanDu Thank you so much! That's really nice to hear :)
We'll be doing an episode on True North about a week after it's released so stay tuned :)
@@lunalairTM I agree. If I was forced to do that, my head would explode! Just not possible for me 😂
Brilliant! Thank you!!!
Hi dude . This song is a masterpiece !!! A faery tale song !!! A-ha IS one of the best bands of all Time with Dead Or Alive and Sisters Of Mercy !!! Morten harket IS juste incredible !!! However , he have the World record of High voice...PS : sorry for my poor english...
Cheers, thanks for commenting! And yes, I'm only just discovering their catalog but have loved the journey so far. Thanks for commenting! :)
1000 subscribers! Congrats, Matt!
I was reluctant when I saw you were doing reactions to a-ha, but I had to see you doing "A Boy's Adventure Tale". What a song. I was there when a-ha made it big, I had the posters on my wall right from the start. Early 1986 (when I was 11) was all HUNTING HIGH AND LOW and Arcadia's SO RED THE ROSE for me. I got SCOUNDREL DAYS and NOTORIOUS on LP for Xmas '86, but then the teen press made up some rivalry, and there was Pal Waaktaar talking in not the nicest way about Duran Duran (as if they were looks only with no musical substance), so I started taking sides. I bought STAY ON THESE ROADS in '88 and stopped listening all through the 90s until 2003 when I rediscovered their work. I do know that there are wonderful songs on all of their albums, like "Early Morning", "Locust", "Little Black Heart", "Forever Not Yours" (sigh), "Lifelines" or "The Bandstand" being some of my faves, but I never got over them ending "on a high note" and coming back again and again since. A friend of mine thought it was a good idea to give me CAST IN STEEL for my birthday in 2015. We listened to it once and I haven't touched it since. But one day I might listen again (with you?), and I wish you a lot of fun discovering a-ha. Definitely a lot of great music to enjoy, even more so as you're not as entangled in personal struggles as I am. ;D
Early Morning/Little black heart/Forever not yours/and wow 'Lifelines' Loove these ones.'Bandstand' is also a fave from the FOTM album.Btw did Pal really said that?I think the DD guys firstly made a move on 'being bitter' on Aha.I also know that the Nords kind of got defensive on DD when John Bary got started saying some rude things on DD while a-ha were doing James Bond theme The Living Daylights with him. That man was also in some kind of artistic conflict with DD one year earlier. while doing the previous theme 'A view to a kill' You know he wasn't an 'easy man' to work with.
@@christianoazzuro6711 I love your name. :D
I only recall some interviews from the German teen press, probably spiced up to get some more attention from the readers. It left its mark in my teenage heart, and while I was super loyal to DD way beyond my teenage years, a-ha fell by the wayside. As I already mentioned, I went back and picked them up again, and I do enjoy a lot of their stuff. I even read their brilliant biography by Jan Omdahl (The Swing Of Things 1985-2010).
John Barry complained about both bands, as far as I remember. You can't please everyone. ;D
@@sebzematik In an interview i spotted a couple of years ago in utube with Mags and Pal,Mags was rather critical but in a humouristic way about that collaboration with JB.Pal though was more positive admiting that despite their conflict at the time (on the song's arrangements), JB was finally right on the way 'The Living daylights' insisted to sound. His option was the right one that really gave it that J.Bond feel.Even now they do play the JB version and not the album's (Stay on these roads)version while being on tour.I guess time ease things and let us rethink and reconsider looking at past events through a 'wiser' view.
@@christianoazzuro6711 Well said!
To me the song was always from a person who had become homeless.
Oh wow! Will have to re-listen with that interpretation in mind. Cheers for the comment!
@@mattsnider2667 I fixed my dwelling for the night, lights in pairs coming passing by , where I hide.
So when I put that image in my head about it being a homeless person it makes the song more tragic , someone who has lost everything and all he has left is his dreams of better times.
@@mattsnider2667 and the sun always shines on tv is about depression.
Ce titre est sortie avec Train of thought en face b sur le territoire des Philippines uniquement ! 😉
Those drums sting don't they..
Beautiful song , from hearing the lyrics I would suggest it could be from a homeless man’s point of view 🤷♀️
I travel to the past every time I listen to it. A lullaby with a time machine effect in fairy-tale tones. Simply wonderful.❤🎵🎶❤🎵🎶❤🎵🎶❤🌌⛼🌃🌇🌆❤🎵🎶❤🎵🎶
