  • Koji Igarashi's original masterpiece. Does it hold up? How does it develop, introduce, and expand on the metroidvania formula from the eponymous Metroid series? What is a man? We find out here today!
You can also tell I'm bad at making thumbnails because Richter isn't the same resolution as everyone else, and because this horrible thing took me like two hours to make...I'll get used to Photoshop eventually...maybe...

This is a classic. Many faults but it still hold up well today. The OST is great but some songs just does not seem to be well placed. You talk about Crissaegrim but what about the Shield Rod/Mablung Sword and the Alucard Shield? xD

The Crissaegrim is not that bad. Yes it is OP as hell but by the time you get it the game is almost over, the Inverted Castle is very short. Also the drop rate on Crissaegrim is low so if you are unlucky you might never get it.
I think the Claimh Solais from Aria of Sorrow is a much worse offender. It's ridiculously easy to get early, it's not a random drop so not RNG dependant and once you get it the game is basically over you can steamroll through everything.
Same thing for the Shield Rod+Alucard Shield combo. By the time you have it, game is basically almost over.

I think if there's a kind of game which could get away with just inverting its map for its second half it's probably igavanias. Since the level design is often so barebones in these games to begin with, rooms are very simple and kind of excuses to have enemy setups in them. And yet they made it so, so much worse by mostly making the main aerial navigation option, the bat, such a bitch to use or way too limited or something.
