Castlevania: Symphony of the Night SPEEDRUN World Record holder btw
#worldrecord #speedrun #castlevania
Thanks for creating this video. Commentated speedruns are one of my favorite types of content.
The underwater reverse caverns always give me the most trouble when I'm going for 200.6%. I always forget that the wolf can swim and have to relearn it by stumbling on it in a guide.
THE WOLF CAN SWIM????
@@skwarka3285 only with the holy symbol, the J and skill of wolf
@@zoraiaero kinda funny that the "Holy Symbol" is just a striaght up snurkle XD
What I like about what you do in this, is you do explain what you are doing and why. This matters because not many players outside of a game's community are going to understand what they are seeing.

Exactly as a casual player of this game speed runs are wild let alone explaining.
I did a 200.6% speedrun of SotN when I was a kid once. Took me about 2 weeks. After watching this video, I think I could get it down to one week. I suspect Dr4gonBlitz's record will be safe from me for a while yet.
It's been a year. How fast can you get it now?
@@JustCagna Unfortunately I've actually gone up to three weeks per attempt. I really should have stopped practicing while I was ahead.
This is insane to me as someone who beat this game once after nearly a YEAR of playing it. The skill speedrunners have never ceases to amaze me!
i was hoping to see a glitchless run of 200% but very impressive still!
Congratulations. I love when you comment your runs It makes everything crystal clear. Collecting these underwater map tiles in the second castle is a nightmare.
At 31:30 a new skip was discovered that if you have a second controller plugged in on Playstation and you hit triangle while on it you can freely break the bridge. It has to do with developer code left in the game.
He's on xbox, but yea worth looking into.
I was watching this yesterday but forgot to say: absolutely amazing run and explanation, dude.
For me the category should still include collecting the relics and fighting the bosses.
I love this game to death, and holy smokes, the amount of practice you must have gone through is incredible.
Amazing run!!
"Not an expert" 😊
Amazing run! I never knew about the wolf swim tech until watching this. I always gravity jumped and transformed into the wolf after hitting the ceiling to get those annoying map tiles.
57:14 Dude, wonked Alucard's head for hours, and didn't complete, until transformed to Wolf that is
Didn't knew about "Puppy swim", and overall enjoyable run; chill commentary, on point, and clean execution (I'm not expecting TAS lvl of course)
Not even speedrunning, just trying to get the 200.6%, trying to get the wolf tiles in the caverns was such a pain. Had no idea about the swimming, I would always gravity jump and attempt to transform into wolf RIGHT at the top. -.-
It's incredible how soothing your voice is when you're making explanation videos !
Really great video. Love your explanations! I'm having a hard time understanding how going out of bounds under the floor and other places is not considered the same thing as "out of bounds".
the "out of bounds" i'm referring to would lead to additional map%. My goal was to only collect intended map tiles, otherwise you can go out of bounds in places like the chapel and get much higher than 200.6%
@@dr4gonblitz Yeah, gotcha, I understand that. It's just hard to make the distinction between "out of bounds map tiles" and "going out of bounds". Probably my OCD kicking -in 🤣. I didn't check the category description though so my confusion is on me. By the way listening to your knowledgeable commentaries is really great and I would take more of that any day.
@57:00 Yes, it's super smooth to Super Jump > Bonk > Transform to wolf (the transform animation, while bonked, "pulls" the camera upward the last few pixels needed to "count" for map tile completion.
I don’t see the wolf tf u saying lol
Sorry for the confusion@@KejutoJetomo
I was referring to what @Dr4gonBlitz was saying in that moment about collecting the obscure map tiles, not commenting on that slice of gameplay footage.
@@Drjebus yeah that strategy works well, just was confused lol. I'm deaf so don't mind me.
ok ill suscribe
the attention to detail for this part @43:45 is😗👌
Without a proper route and with no glitches I was able to run up a 4 hr 200.6 run, there was a couple of map tiles I missed on the reverse castle and i don't know how to hold the bat transformation so it was all Alucard shield dashing haha, but it was far from optimal I just love the game so I did it in one session
Yes, I completely agree that the Inverted Caverns map tiles were an absolute pain in the ass to get!! I've never speedrun the game but I'm a huge Castlevania fan and have done casual 200.6% playthroughs on PSX and PSP and am currently doing my first full playthrough of the Saturn version with the recent translation patch.
I agree that all Relics and Bosses should be part of a "True 100%" run of the game. I'd also add all Max HP and Max Heart power ups and maybe all endings but I'm not sure if either of them would really change the speedrun route aside from adding a few more detours and delays.
Seen many of your runs and still learn things every time!
SAME!
This game is pure art!
Also the gameplay is just beautiful 😍
The last time I played this game was quite a long time ago, but as soon as you started going for those tiles in the reverse caverns, something immediately came back to me, because despite not remembering a lot, I _do_ distinctly remember those tile being bullshit. I don't think I ever collected them, actually--I just collected enough other tiles to get the other ending.
I’ve been playing SotN once a year since it came out. (I’m one of those weird people who misses “I am the Wind” from the credits.)
I’ve never seen Inverted Caverns done so smoothly, and I’ll never be able to do Inverted Colosseum like that. This is legit one of the most impressive videos I’ve ever seen.
Please consider more speedrun explanation videos in the future. This was great.
Love how thoroughly you explain the run! Awesome time!
You completing all map tiles, all relics, all bosses deserve like 300% cathegory honestly and truly, this is my most favourite SotN speedrun so far(except TAS's)
Dude, been watching all your YT vids for quite awhile. You are an extremely talented runner of this game. sotn has been my favorite game of all time since I played it as a kid. Watching you play makes me want to attempt a speedrun, but I'd probably be ass at it because I always had trouble even just chaining wing smashes. Actually didn't even know you could do that until watching romscout speedrun it way back when.
And YES, Fuck the Reverse Caverns map tiles. I have 200.6% the game before, but HOLY SHIT those map tiles made me SO mad. Watching you do it with relative ease (in comparison, I know it's not actually easy at all) makes me want to give it another go, now that I know more about the game.
Love your stuff DB, and hope I can make a livestream soon!
Never done a speed run but have done a 200.6% completion on my main file. Those upside down water sections were indeed the worst. As far as specialty runs, the most interesting one I've ever done is a fist-only run. Not 200.6% but it was interesting trying to beat the game using only fist weapons. Fist of Tulkas ended up being really useful for providing range. Made me a lot better at understanding enemy attack patterns if nothing else.
I actually had to google how to get the map completions in the reverse underground caverns.
I've also been playing this game since the 90s and never knew the wolf could swim until just now. I got the completion in those areas by abusing the mechanic where the dog jumps a little higher when you shift into it in the air.
I only managed to get 100% tiles, as a kid i tried to "speedrun" this game. It only took me 5 hours to do it.
Love these commentary vods.
Those map tiles in the caverns are just the worst, i remember being so confused on why they weren't collecting and i thought they were bugged-
I didn't know about the wolf swimming mechanic until i realized it was there and had to go back there to get those final ones lol
I went through hell as well but I managed by sumper jumping, bonking and then double jumping right or left.
I love the speed runs but really wish i didn't have to hear tsh tsh tsh tsh tsh tsh tsh tsh tsh tsh tsh tsh tsh tsh
Just found your channel looking for SOTN stuff. I have played this game on and off since I was a kid. It is my all time favorite I have never attempted a speed run and probably never will. But I love the videos and what you do I have achieved the 200.6% before but haven’t gone for it in a while. But as a fellow huge fan of the game I say thanks for all you do with it.
22:53 I love the fact that he did this speedrun and even he is impressed with his movement sometimes 😂😂😂
And about the inverted water part of the maps I almost sure that it is impossible to collect without using the wolf relic and the swimming mechanic. When I was going for the 200% of the game for the first time I remember that I arrived at this part and tried to collect the map blind, I spend 10 to 15 minutes banging my head against this part and after not managing to do it I give up the idea of doing 200% and just collect enough of the map for the "true" ending.
I'm not a speed runner, and only occasionally do I consume speed run content. But this one held my interest very well. Possibly because it's a game I have a lot of nostalgia for, but I think that it was in no small part due to your excellent explanations and clear mastery of the subject matter.
I'm curious how fast this run could go if you only checked the map once before the final boss of each castle to prove you got it, never bonked or messed up, and potentially a new glitch like if you could use an item while transformed to restore your MP whenever you wanted
This is very informative and entertaining at the same time. Hopefully you will have more videos like this.
5:42 never noticed the eye through the window 😲
Oh sheesh that's much creepier than alot of things in the game
@@Spectrik true
Why jump over the gladius after doppelganger 1? One would think it would be slightly faster to shield dash through it. Or is it a meme?
The fairy is like WTF bro
not a speedrunner per se but i love SotN, but i Love this game, I used to play the "right" way but can't do anymore since the third time i finished (it was way before speedrun was a thing but...) and discovered the death skip(the damage boost one) I finish this game at least once or twice a year (like i said im not a runner), but i know that I can do in a quick sit down nowadays.
(I wish I could do the relics skip thats the one i need to train for it)
well done! not much for speed running, but i love this game so much, i HAD to watch. very impressive
I actually just posted on reddit a couple days ago where I had 255 potions out of nowhere. I somehow did a glitch with the fairy, but I don't know how I did it.
AMAZING STUFF
Eres un crack no me canso de ver la habilidad que tienes he visto casi todas tus runs sencillamente genial
Can anyone help me? I have 199.7% on the android version. (This is without beating the game) It doesn't save after beating Dracula. But there are 2 parts on the I believe caverns in reversed Castle and another on the opposite side I can't remember what the area is called but I can't get them to pop up on the map to where I can get it to 200%. I have found every secret room and I'm pretty sure every weapon for the game. No matter what I do though it won't pop up blue on the map. I've tried to swim with the wolf, jump as many times as I can, and anything I else I can think of. If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it
Same. I've been stuck at 198.?? For the longest time. I just gave it up. I say watch this all the way through to help.
@@mfurrpt2ify i finally figured it out a week or so after this comment and got the 200.6% there was 2 hidden rooms in the reverse castle I missed but finally found and when swimming with the wolf you have to make sure to keep the button held down to swim so the game will register you've been there
@@rawritsSpecate Dope
I bet they were either worried people would miss it, or they had examples of people freeing Richter and not realizing the teleporter was there
15:24 "Get the fuck outta my way!"
I could listen to DB narration all day, best runner on the scene!
22:52 - "Dang, I'm gaming right now."
Respect.
Waaaaaay back in the day I tried following a few gamefaqs guides to try to reach full 200% map coverage. I don’t remember why but I gave up at around 196%. Probably some secret rooms that I never found out about.
Also those gamefaqs guides mentioned the possibility of reaching over 200% and at that point I gave up. I was like “I’ll never understand the mechanics well enough to get there”
This is a top 5 game for me. I bought it the week it came out on the original PlayStation (yes I'm old) and have completed it to 200.6% three times, but at no point did I do any of it in a hurry like this. Wow!
And I figured out the wolf could swim to get these map tiles. I just thought that was known. Interesting!
Holy, that is nuts, to speed run and get 200.6% all in just a little over 1 hour.
I have said this to others, but I'm saying it again. They missed out on some fun antics with those imps. Having the Fairy Familiar should have the Imps leave Alucard alone, because they're spending all their efforts attempting to impress the Fairy, while she spins off a list of unique refusal lines. Alternatively, if you have the Demon Familiar, the Imps follow him around like a super boss figure. All fanning over him, while he gets more and more frustrated by their behavior.
i dont know if you still read the comments but i wonder how do you use the wolf abilities? I finished the game yesterday and despite collecting all the Wolf powerups all my wolf could do was walk slowly and bark, i clicked every button on my controller but to no avail (p.s that jewel sword room was the only one i was missing this whole game aaaa)
Power of Wolf: Double Tap -> -> and hold to Run swiftly. (You will stop if hit by anything.)
Skill of Wolf: Ryu's Haduken, ⬇↘➡+Attack to Run Swiftly (You will NOT stop if hit). Run through Errrrrrthing until you run out of Manna.
Damn, this is crazy, man. Congrats on the amazing run!
I always get 200.5% and can't find the last 0.1%
How come in your version you don't have to beat Maria for the holy glasses
28:35 I have been playing this game since it came out and somehow I never knew about this secret? Like, what the absolute hell??
(I thought I'd gotten 200.6% before but apparently not.)
edit: I also didn't know the wolf can swim. This game, I swear to god
Amazing video!! However, I will not tolerate this Familiar slander 😤😤 Faerie familiar at least was instrumental to helping me out since she can heal a lot, get rid of poison, curse and stone effects, give you resistance to things, and revive you if you die. When I was fighting Galamoth, I fought him for like 10 minutes and died JUST before I killed him, and she revived me. Hit him a few more times and killed him. I never switched Familiars since
Watching this masterpiece is a pleasure! Thank you!
I'm glad you explained the death skip👍 I always wondered how you did it
I’ve never done a speed run of any game, but I love this game so I did do a 200.6% and collected all items. I distinctly remember having a heck of a time getting those difficult tiles in the inverted castle. It was really frustrating lol
55:03 has been enjoyable, yeah XD
I'm not very experienced in speedrunning, and I don't think I'd be able to go with this game of I try starting out, bit it's still really exciting and fun to watch
I remember hearing you could get like 210% back in the day and made it my mission to get it. I don't even remember how or where at this point and I can't find info online about it which is odd.
Reverse Caverns map tiles are freaking crazy, man. I've spent some HOURS trying to get them when I first played sotn 😂
I love SotN, love full clearing it and love collecting items, never would I have imagined it could be run this fast! Great execution!
Amazing to watch! 🧛♂🍷 (And reminds me, I'd like to make games, and play them, but I'd not want to have to think of all this for speed running!)
I got my 200.6% back in 2000 or 2001. And I still remember how infuriating Inverted Cavers were.
A year plus after this came out and yeah.. reverse caverns. I struggled with gravity jumping. You can get it believe it or not. But it's a bit of a bear.
Everytime when i get to 200,6% - I always missing TWO rooms! Even if i tilt and follow by map - I always missing two rooms. Like a personal curse.. The last time I even asked my wife to help me find these damn squares. She found it, on easy, and she doesn't even play Castlevania
i only got 204% or so i had the ending for that but i coulndt tell what was missing XD but i remember the inverted caverns was hell too collect the map ^^
Thanks for putting out an explained version i love watching speedruns where they break down how it works
The Inverted Cavern tiles are so awful. Even without speedrunning, it’s so frustrating to get them to collect.
The Reverse Caverns requiring you to swim as a dog to get full map coverage is so unintuitive! It took me so long to figure that out!
o melhor é versão sega saturno é completo jogo no ps1 e versão ps4 falta muita coisa tiro na versão americano o sega saturno versão japonês é mas completo jogo uma dica
I've played this game since the US release and what DB does is STILL amazing.
I don't speed run. I just like the game. One of my favorites from my childhood
I sped up the video by 2x lol. It was fun to watch since I never completed the game myself.
Monsters to speed-running Alucard: "Don't turn your back on me!"
Easily my favorite game , have you ever done an every item and weapon run , the best part is getting all of the items for me
I just beat sotn the other day and have been playing other castlevania games.
This is awesome 👌
I hear if you play in luck mode you can beat the clock cycle. Does that change the route for this run?
I need glitchless speedrun 😅 inputs like bat smash are too hard for the casual player.
I've had so much problems with the reversed cavern roof. I DID NOT KNOW THE WOLF COULD SWIM! Damn game! So much time trying to get that taking one step to the side and doing the high jump. Spent hours under that missing square. Thank you!
I HATE THOSE MAP TILES! I don't speed run, but I am a huge on completion, so I've done 200.6% several times, and even knowing I could swim as the wolf, it still makes me angry trying to get those tiles.
Also, I think this run will go uncontested in the 200.6% category for a LONG time
made it to 55 minutes. subscribed. i have nothing meaningful to say.
Those horrible reverse cavern tiles are a nightmare, my like 3 or 4 casual playthroughs, with like 7 years apart, every time, I always had to check a guide on how to do it after 30 mins of banging my head with gravity jumps.
On the other hand, I started running randomizer seeds after watching your content, I've only ran lycan, because I feel confident with the death skip, I'm trying to achieve a sub hour to submit it to the discord channel.
Keep the awesome work
Never tried to speedrun anything except maybe GoW and it was the basic for the achievement. Nowhere near this complex. As for my gaming experience with SotN, it's one of my favorite games of all time. I've done the 100% run a few times, on PS1, PSP from Dracula X Chronicles and I think an emulator. I adore this game (and Castlevania in general) and your content is amazing! I was in awe of all the things you have to do to speedrun it. New sub on my end. Keep up the great work!
55:45 You can WHAT?! lol
wow that woulda been useful, instead of having to do gravity boots and transform, not get the map, walk a little forward, and doing it over and over again while getting absolutely steamrolled by every enemy
I think use bug is cheater, when you buy duplicater mean game is end.
Thank you for the 1 hours and 20 minutes of explaining what you were doing and why! Over an hour of informative audio for my background noise is great!
Damn i thought 10 hours record was ok...
I remember going through the game and keep checking the map to see if I had all the squares, felt like something I had to complete, and I remember being confused when after being sure that I did pass a place to see that the square wasn't collected, and some other time just barely entering a huge room and already having the whole thing show up in the map, didn't think there was a person who memorized all those details and would do it in this mesmerizing entertaining way, I'm simply in awe during the entirety of the video, even backtracked a few times to check out some of the more amazing moments, really impressive 😮
The upside down cavern to get the map tiles underwater are a pain. The only way I could get those was to gravity boost up and morph into the wolf. Love the video.. brings me back to 7th grade lol.
I hate those inverted water map spots, I spent so long trying to jump to get them.
When going for 200.6% on the PS4 ver I was missing 3 rooms at the end of the game.
Took me an hour to find the rooms I needed for .2%
I cannot imagine doing this in 1hr 20
