Join me as I knit an Autumnal version of my favorite vintage sweater! It is the first time I've used my knitting machine to make a sweater and I love it! I still hand knit the color work and hand-finished the sweater.

Engineering knits is a place for people who enjoy all kinds of vintage and antique crafts - from sewing to knitting, crochet to embroidery I like to try it all. I definitely have a preference for historical fibre crafts, and it is my dream to one day make an entire outfit from sheep to sweater. I hope you enjoy watching me and my favorite companion, Nutella, struggle through some fascinating projects!

What a great sweater. And with being able to do a lot of the "grunt work" on your machine, I hope we see a winter-themed sweater with holly leaves/berries or pine trees!

I just have to say that I love seeing what intricate things you can make with the knitting machine. I am losing hand mobility due to a nerve disease and not being able to knit anymore is one of my biggest fears. Your videos give me hope that I can find an accessible option!

So beautiful! And the yarn was impeccable! Your determination is admirable; you found a solution to make a beautiful sweater despite your hand fatigue. I've developed joint stiffness in my fingers from knitting, but you inspire me to try different methods to continue my craft. Thanks!
    Also, your hair looks amazing.

I’ve been slowly rewatching your catalogue for the past month or so and the way you show your mistakes and how you eventually fixed them is so so delightful to watch!
I’m a sewist (who crochets sometimes) who doesn’t knit AT ALL so knitting is like magic to me! 😂

Lovely! I have done the same as you many times. Used the machine to make the stockinette and then worked the design by hand. Just for future reference, look for something called revel cord. It's about the thickness of lace to light fingering weight yarn, is very smooth and comes in long lengths. I use it when I'm scrapping off the piece by knitting 1 row with the ravel cord before knitting with the waste yarn. It makes it so much easier to get the stitches onto a needle. I look forward to seeing you making this design for another season!

Absolutely wonderful to see someone actually using a knitting machine. I don't use mine very often despite even being taught how to use it at design school as I still make so many mistakes with it. I look forward to seeing more of you knitting on your machine, hopefully it will help me overcome my fear of my machine. I still do lots of hand knitting. Also I love all the vintage knits you do.

It’s fascinating how your green and white pullover created a crisp, graphic leaf pattern, while the sweater with the more mottled yarn resulted in mistier, more indistinct leaves. I wonder how much of the difference between the two projects can be attributed to the yarn, and how much results from the different stitch pattern of your leaves?
Both garments are lovely. And it’s so interesting to tinker with variables, and see such different outcomes.

This sweater is so cool! I bought a knitting machine after seeing yours, and I've been too nervous to try to convert a hand-knit pattern to a machine-knit pattern, so it was lovely to see you do it! I love the design of the sweater, it looks so perfect for Fall! Fun side note: A friend of mine is Australian, and until he'd been living here through a couple of years, he'd never understood why we call Autumn "Fall". And I got to be the person with him when he had the lightening bolt moment of "omigosh, it's because the leaves 'fall' off the trees!" which evidently doesn't happen in Australia.

I noticed you were using a spare hook to do up your ribbing. You can pick up a handled latch hook at most craft stores, usually near the rug-making supplies. They're very handy and easier on the hands, though I'm just as likely to reach for a crochet hook to ladder up "machine" ribbing

  • @catherinemelnyk

Decades ago when I had a basic knitting machine, after doing my tension swatch etc, I hand knit my ribbing, then did a few rows in waste yarn, then I picked up the open stitches onto the machine, and tore out the waste yarn, then continued in regular stocking stitch on my machine.

I love this so much! When you mentioned this yarn for an upcoming project, I had a feeling it would be a rework of this vintage sweater with different leaves. But I really loved watching you use the knitting machine (it's so fascinating!) AND that you are taking care of yourself by being conscientious of where you put effort and strain. I applaud that. Beautiful sweater, and inspiring all around! ❤

I noticed your table that you have your machine on is a little bit shaky I bought an old military style metal desk Very sturdy plus I can also use it for my welding because it’s completely metal. Also I have my grandmothers sideboard which has a cheap piece of Masonite on the back and I just took that off and cut slots into it for my knitting machine and I can attach it to the back.
