Yeah, that second row is tricky, but I think what they meant was "do (skip 1, SC, skip 1, 5 DC in one stitch) over and over and thenskip 1 and do a SC to finish off the last scallop".
Yeah, the “lastly” was dead giveaway if you’re outside of it and not doing it, but as the person who has to do it, it’s sometimes hard to think clearly in the moment. 😅
Okay, you could totally pass that off as a little collar with a winter ensemble. But if it's a "who wore it best" competition...sorry. It's gotta be Nutella!
Oh my gosh! lol, I must have been too excited and missed the word Cape , Im just glad it was at the end , Im sorry... but oh what fun!! i think you did a great job , no context, no image ... no one else could have done it! :)
For the top/bottom discrepancy, one thing I was thinking when you reached that part and struggled to parse the "eight stitches in two stitches" part is that it might have wanted you to crochet not into one stitch and then the other, but instead into the loop formed by those two stitches. That way, you still have a round scallop to crochet your next row into, and it keeps going that way even when you increase the number of stitches. It's just a theory, but maybe worth taking a look at?
It's a perfect fit!! Nutella will look so fancy on her next walk 🥰. You should make a matching one in a worsted weight for yourself. Love this collaboration, two of my favorite fiber crafters working together is more than I would have dreamed of. Thank you so much for this!
As soon as I saw it called for a pound of yarn, I thought that this is going to be a big project! Then you thought it would be a collar and I guess you didn’t think of that. Nutella is adorable!
Find @justvintagecrochet 's video on the mystery pattern Nutella picked here: ruclips.net/video/BR23L1oFJQg/видео.html Were do you think I went wrong?? I think there were multiple places along the way - though I'm still a bit confused about the different pattern on the top vs the bottom, what do you think?
In addition to whats already been said about yarn and hook sizes, i find what @linr8260 sais about crocheting the '8' inbetween the 'two' stiches sounds very logic to me. then, yes i think the outcome would also change if you crochet a plain=slipstitch and double=single cs ...aaand i think you got the beginings for the individual rows not quite right - looks like you were trying to ceep the edge more like a rectangle when it maybe truely should fan out so that the circle could close in the front and hang nicely. the form you approached leaves a gap in the front. I like your endevours in any case :) and it suits Nutella really nice!
How sure are you about the double being a modern single crochet? Because I would very much expect that to be a modern US treble (German: doppeltes Stäbchen), because the whole scallop appears to be growing in size at this point. I also agree with what other people have said that instead of splitting the eight stiches over the previous two plain, they might have wanted you to work them in between the two plain, so you still get a proper scallop.
I'm so late to the party but I'm confident long, double, and treble are supposed to mean double, treble, and double treble in modern US terms. I'm kinda basing this off the fact that in Swedish, these stitches are called pillar, double pillar, and treble pillar, which (I assume) has to do with the number of yarn overs each stitch requires. This way the stitches get progressively bigger, plus the fact that you are working with less and less tension.
All I know is I still have trouble making my brain compute MODERN crochet and knitting patterns (it doesn't seem to like managing all the abbreviations), so the fact that you got such beautiful stitch work out of this at all is a feat to me!
For row 2, I think the sentence formatting got you! I think it reads as “Alternately work 1 plain and 5 long” (to the end of the row) “and following lastly, one plain” (to finish off the row)
Not a failure!! You produced a tangible item (looks cute on Nutella!) I admire your skills ! Thank you for your interesting and lovely content!! Nutella is precious!
For what it's worth, if you did want to make one that's human sized, I would absolutely watch you figure out the pattern as it was intended. Mystery patterns are really fun (I actually watch Just Vintage Crochet as well!) but translating the pattern into the finished object when you know where you're going is usually much more informative. I want to start knitting and crocheting some vintage stuff (more 40's and 50's for me, I think) and there is definitely a learning curve!
My first inkling that something was going awry was when the pattern called for "one pound of wool" and you had a tiny ball of lace weight yarn sitting in front of you. I tried to imagine how much yardage a pound of lace yarn would make and was envisioning something afghan-sized. I kind of suspect the pattern may have wanted you to stick with double-crochets throughout rather than switching to singles, and was just ambiguous with the terminology. As another commenter said, it may also have wanted single large scallops rather than smaller double-scallops, working between the two stitches rather than dividing the scallop crochets among them. I'd be curious to see what the outcome would be if you revisited this pattern with some of the changes suggested in the comments, at a more human-appropriate gauge size. Ultimately though, I still think you ended up with a really pretty final project that actually fits Nutella beautifully! Not necessarily a failure at all -- you just succeeded at making something other than what the pattern intended.
Looking at this now, I’m sure it would be absolutely beautiful in a different yarn and sized crochet hook. It would be so open and pretty as a pattern. It was a fabulous project. You are so cool!
Perfect fit for your sweet doggie! 😂 I’m working on improving my crochet but hearing the instructions for a vintage pattern I realize how little I know!
The ladder trim with the lavender material looks great together on camera - not sure I'd change the color of the trim. OR, use the ladder trim with the flowery fabric to showed right after that that! Some really beautiful works you have there! Can't wait to see them!
This was absolutely fantastic to watch!! So entertaining!!!! As someone who crochets it was interesting to see how you interpreted the instructions. I think you were right when you thought the plain stitch could be a slip stitch. And when they switched to saying double I probably would’ve kept doing double crochets the whole way. Although it was super weird that they wanted to split the 8 double crochets between the 2 slip stitches. I don’t know how that was supposed to work out. And a funny note about only working through the front loop, if you consistently do that it can have the effect of curving the work towards the front (same if the back loop only is worked) and that is a feature of some patterns I’ve done! Another note, the crochet should take the final general shape as you’re working it without the need for blocking. For instance, when it was ruffling at the beginning that was an indication that the stitches were not correct. Blocking is still useful to really define the stitches but if your piece is wonky while you’re making it then likely something is wrong. I also think that at the sides it would’ve looked smoother if you’d made half scallops (3 double crochet) when starting with a scallop. You’d have gotten a straight edge as a result. That would’ve been easier to work your treble scallop edging into. I look forward to your next mystery pattern!!!
Love watching this, and I genuinely find the older terminology easier to understand as a knitter--I used to always mix up double and single crochet because of the number of steps.
Why did they change the stitch names? It was plain = sc, now it is double crochet = sc. If the scallops were US doubles, I would think the next row with more stitches would have a US treble (a taller stitch). The rows seem to be increasing in with. Should it be increasing in height too?
I'm pretty sure when a 19th century pattern calls for Berlin Wool, it is a light DK weight. Berlin Wool is now called tapestry wool and was used for Berlin wool work (which was cross stitch or another form of counted thread embroidery worked in wool). It is a very smooth, DK weight wool.
That would look really nice as a cuff for a knitted long sleeved top! You would have to crochet a second one though... Or a ruffle for a half sleeved top could work too...
Your fur kid looks amazing! So fun to watch you! Waiting for a love chat with you and Corinna! I love what she does….. and it is nice to see a different take….
Nutella looks so cute! I think maybe the "double" is supposed to be a modern US half double crochet. That may be why the bottom looked so different. Either way, I think I may give this a go with some worsted weight yarn, and a 5.5 or 6 mm hook. Hopefully, I can look fractionally as cute as Nutella in it ❤
🤔 I was always told Berlin wool was the stuff used for needlepoint -- so more like sport than lace weight, with a hook size more around 3-4mm. I really like how the scallops look!
Love the collab with you both. So cool to have you working together. And love your determination with this pattern. What a trial! But really fun to watch.
It looks adorable on the dog! I'm sure the benefits will be realized on those chilly windy days when the dog goes out for a walk. LOL Glad to know that those better than me (far better than me) also have failures. It makes me feel a little more normal. 🤪
Not a fail; The pattern is lovely and you did an excellent job with some tough materials. You also gave Just Vintage Crochet a good challenge as well! New sub now ;)
I've been thinking of crocheting a "house shawl" or cape for a little while now, and I rly love the pattern on this so I might try it 👀 And Nutella wears the cape like a queen 💖 Also thought it could be cute as a turtle neck if you added it to a sweater somehow 🤔
putting the cape on nutella was a stroke of genius! she looks amazing
Nutella definitely chose the pattern for herself!
Imagine showing up to a victorian picnic with Nutella wearing this... 👌😩
Yeah, that second row is tricky, but I think what they meant was "do (skip 1, SC, skip 1, 5 DC in one stitch) over and over and thenskip 1 and do a SC to finish off the last scallop".
I thougt so, too
yes, that's why it says "alternately" for the scallops, and then "lastly" for that ending stitch.
Yeah, the “lastly” was dead giveaway if you’re outside of it and not doing it, but as the person who has to do it, it’s sometimes hard to think clearly in the moment. 😅
That was my assumption as well :)
I think it's clear that Nutella now needs her own Victorian wardrobe. She's the cutest!
Okay, you could totally pass that off as a little collar with a winter ensemble. But if it's a "who wore it best" competition...sorry. It's gotta be Nutella!
Omg, that cape is perfect for Nutella! I wouldn’t call that a fail at all :)
This is the crossover of the century!!
*the 19th century
Oh my gosh! lol, I must have been too excited and missed the word Cape , Im just glad it was at the end , Im sorry... but oh what fun!! i think you did a great job , no context, no image ... no one else could have done it! :)

It's just a theory, but maybe worth taking a look at?
And by "the loop" I mean the hole formed when you've crocheted several times into one single stitch on the previous row. I hope this makes sense orz
It's a perfect fit!! Nutella will look so fancy on her next walk 🥰. You should make a matching one in a worsted weight for yourself. Love this collaboration, two of my favorite fiber crafters working together is more than I would have dreamed of. Thank you so much for this!
What a cute dog capelet!
Who knew the Victorians were so advanced in canine fashion!
If you ever make another mystery knitting or crochet pattern, I'm just going to assume it's a cape😂
As soon as I saw it called for a pound of yarn, I thought that this is going to be a big project! Then you thought it would be a collar and I guess you didn’t think of that. Nutella is adorable!

What a cool idea for Nutella to pick the pattern for Karina. Plus she gets the treat afterward!
I'm so happy to see you two collaborate. I hope that vintage mystery pattern videos become a staple of yarntube
Oh goodness...I saw the direction for a pound of Berlin Wool and my reaction was... "That's no collar..." 😃 You still did a fantastic job!
I would love to see you remake this with a more appropriate yarn and hook! It would be so cute to wear it with Nutella!
Nutella-sized cape is a feature not a bug. 😍
Nutella can remote-view patterns and she engineered this entire thing!❤🎉
OMG! Vintage doggie perfection! LOVE it 💕
YES!!! This was totally made for Nutella!
For row 2, I think the sentence formatting got you!
I think it reads as “Alternately work 1 plain and 5 long” (to the end of the row) “and following lastly, one plain” (to finish off the row)
Nutella is just the best dog! Love this collaboration!

It's like it was made for Neutella. She looks adorable!
“This is the beginning of my cape. I feel very warm. “. 🤣🤣
Oh Nutella!! How beautiful and elegant you are in your cape. If you picked up the mystery then you should get it, as it went. That's a happy ending 🐶
Looking at this now, I’m sure it would be absolutely beautiful in a different yarn and sized crochet hook. It would be so open and pretty as a pattern. It was a fabulous project. You are so cool!
As soon as I saw the size of the cape I was chanting 'put it on nutella' and you didn't disappoint 😂😂😂❤
Perfect fit for your sweet doggie! 😂 I’m working on improving my crochet but hearing the instructions for a vintage pattern I realize how little I know!
I came here from Just Vintage Crochet & I think this is a great collaboration. The cape looks great on your fur baby.
I was really hoping Nutella would get to wear it, I'm so glad she did! 😍
Nutella is the perfect model for the peregrine. Thank you. Such fun!😊
What a beautiful cape for Nutella! She's a classy lady too, and now the whole world can see it
The ladder trim with the lavender material looks great together on camera - not sure I'd change the color of the trim. OR, use the ladder trim with the flowery fabric to showed right after that that! Some really beautiful works you have there! Can't wait to see them!
as a knitter I think my brain just exploded. I'm so confused by crochet, but this was entertaining and interesting to watch!!

I smiled so big when Nutella got the cape!
I bet you always wanted to crochet a pretty Sunday-best cape for Nutella! It suits her 👍🏻
I love Corinna and she did a great job on your choice for her. I’m so glad I found your channel!
I love this colab, thank you for beeing in for it.
Luv this collaboration. Great fun. Your dog is beautiful, luv the cape on her. Look toward more fun watching you and vintage crochet.
I bet it would look lovely in the larger form, though it does work well as a puppy cape!
My kids and I got a good chuckle out of watching you dress Nutella in your mini cape! Love your videos!
Not actually a fail since Nutella can wear it. She looked so cute in it.
I can’t wait for the next video. I love that you guys are doing this.
❤️🐶🧶
Why did they change the stitch names? It was plain = sc, now it is double crochet = sc. If the scallops were US doubles, I would think the next row with more stitches would have a US treble (a taller stitch). The rows seem to be increasing in with. Should it be increasing in height too?
Nutella was a great sport! I'm new and here from Just Vintage Crochet.
I'm loving watching these surprise makes.😊
Love the cape on Nutella. I am glad to see you and Corina doing mystery patterns, have to get Retro Claudia in on it too. Love watching all of you
How fun, love to see this !!

Nutella!!!!❤❤❤❤❤ What a great collab. Hope this will be an ongoing thing. My 2 favorite crocheters.
That cape looks too cute for words, but then little Nutella is too cute for words!
The moment you said it was supposed to be a cape... so funny 🤣
Nutella is so incredibly cute in the cape!!!!
Yikes! Maybe a vintage cape for a Cabbage Patch doll! 🙂 So cute on Nutella!
the end made me smile. It looks great on Nutella!
Nutella looks very sophisticated!
Nutella looks so cute!! Now she can match you when you wear your own historical outfits.
Thank you for another amazing video!
Love the collaboration between you and Corina! And Nutella looks beautiful and t seems the capelet was meant for her 😊
Nuttla looks great! The hat just finishes the look! lol Your stitching is lovely
That would be nice as an Victorian doll’s cape.
😂 great fun reading along with you I have read row 2 the same way but it does make 4st left. 100/6=16 with 4 over.
That would look really nice as a cuff for a knitted long sleeved top! You would have to crochet a second one though... Or a ruffle for a half sleeved top could work too...
How fun you both did a great job not a fail it just shows how tec editing and testers have helped with these patterns
Your fur kid looks amazing! So fun to watch you! Waiting for a love chat with you and Corinna! I love what she does….. and it is nice to see a different take….

You ladies are making me want to try some vintage patterns. Thankyou for the lovely videos!
Nutella gets even more cute with the cape ❤❤❤
Love the collab with you both. So cool to have you working together. And love your determination with this pattern. What a trial! But really fun to watch.

What a beautiful pattern- even in miniature!
Nutella looks so adorable!
Not a fail; The pattern is lovely and you did an excellent job with some tough materials. You also gave Just Vintage Crochet a good challenge as well! New sub now ;)
This is a great reminder to always read the pattern through first! I’m terrible for it 😂
And also blocking!! How much better do the stitches look after a good blocking?! That’s it, I’m a convert!
It's not a fail! Nutella looks adorable in her new pelerine 😍
Weldon’s needlework books are such eye candy.
It’s still a pretty piece and perfect for Nutella, she wears it well😊🧶❤️
I've been thinking of crocheting a "house shawl" or cape for a little while now, and I rly love the pattern on this so I might try it 👀 And Nutella wears the cape like a queen 💖 Also thought it could be cute as a turtle neck if you added it to a sweater somehow 🤔
