  • I don't know why I put off making my Victorian Ball Gown for so long, but now I have to sew it in a week. Of course, this is the week where we have incredible storms and my power goes out, and I slowly lose my mind as I stay up far too late finishing the gown.

Engineering knits is a place for people who enjoy all kinds of vintage and antique crafts - from sewing to knitting, crochet to embroidery I like to try it all. I definitely have a preference for historical fibre crafts, and it is my dream to one day make an entire outfit from sheep to sweater. I hope you enjoy watching me and my favorite companion, Nutella, struggle through some fascinating projects!

Next time you need to use a pan to iron, can I suggest an ironing cloth? 😁 I was so nervous watching you iron directly onto the silk! It's looking beautiful, the shot silk is gorgeous!

Yes please an ironing cloth! I was very worried we would have ruined silk and you having a meltdown. Disaster avoided!

Love the anti-goblin glasses and the cast iron "iron"! That's some great engineering input.

The purple silk is a beautiful fabric, and helped the dress look so nice. It was fun watching your enthusiasm for the project, but a bit hard to watch your anxiety insomnia 😬 Thank you for showing people that you don't need dedicated pattern weights! Multi-purpose household items all the way.

I too know the pain of a power cut when creating to a deadline. In Februay, I was embroidering a coat to wear to an Art Deco festival that week when a cyclone took out the power for 5 days. I'm only now getting back to working on the coat for a July festival - fingers crossed. Don;t knock your sewing ability. Many of us wouldn't attempt anything like that at all.

And I also really enjoyed your call with Claude - I love her videos too - maybe you two could keep up the collabs?
Anyway, looking forward to all the ball garments. You are so impressive, with your 'I'm not very confident' sewing skills!!

For your future outages, since you have a gas stove, you can heat the water for your hair wash. You’ll just need a basin to wash your hair upside down. I’m sure you have something around to use as a basin.

Try using a length of cheap cotton muslin or a length of an old percale bed sheet as a pressing cloth. It'll catch the smudges instead of your working fabric.

Wow, especially the sewing & ironing with no electricity. I used to have a propane camping lantern, which gave lots of light during power outages. One of my 3 Singer sewing machines is a human-powered hand-crank sewing machine-I might buy another camping lantern just in case!

Victorian sewing machine attachments are the BEST!!! I have a couple of their modern equivalents because I don't currently have the space for my treadle where I live, but they're much harder to use. Still better than doing long hemmed ruffles by hand though

I can attest that it is even more stunning irl! Kudos to you taking apart that Bertha again - I made mine separately on a thin cotton backing that I'd already fitted to the dress so in the end mine is only tacked to the neckline. Did you find any issues after the ball? On a rear photo I saw my top hook and eye had come undone allowing a little gaping at the top of the lacing - it's now changed so should stay shut for its next outing later this year! Looking forward to seeing the next installment 😊

If that's a Laughing Moon pattern, I can see why you'd end up with so much excess fabric. We bought their pack of two corset patterns with chemise/drawers patterns, and Lord. When we tried making the gored corset, the first draft had to be practically cut IN HALF it was so big... which is ***immensely tedious*** when you're working on something like a corset, which is a series of delicately-shaped panels.
Every pattern in the pack was a nightmare to work with, even for my mom, an experienced sewist. TT_TT
