Sewing a Victorian Ball Gown in a week (or: Vlogging my descent into madness)

- I don't know why I put off making my Victorian Ball Gown for so long, but now I have to sew it in a week. Of course, this is the week where we have incredible storms and my power goes out, and I slowly lose my mind as I stay up far too late finishing the gown.

Engineering knits is a place for people who enjoy all kinds of vintage and antique crafts - from sewing to knitting, crochet to embroidery I like to try it all. I definitely have a preference for historical fibre crafts, and it is my dream to one day make an entire outfit from sheep to sweater. I hope you enjoy watching me and my favorite companion, Nutella, struggle through some fascinating projects!
Macgyvering an iron is *peak* engineering! 🎉
Next time you need to use a pan to iron, can I suggest an ironing cloth? 😁 I was so nervous watching you iron directly onto the silk! It's looking beautiful, the shot silk is gorgeous!
Yes please an ironing cloth! I was very worried we would have ruined silk and you having a meltdown. Disaster avoided!
The cast-iron iron is genius and was really fun to watch you do, lol
I feel Ada would definitely use those neck saving glasses! Love your project and gorgeous fabric. I hope your flowered mock up will be a real dress too, so pretty.
Love the anti-goblin glasses and the cast iron "iron"! That's some great engineering input.
"Do I need sleep?" - the perennial cry of all fibrecrafters.
Oh I love Retro Claude! What a great crossover.
There's something about the energy of this video--I mean, I know you were stressed, but you also seemed somehow even more comfortable and confident. This is quite the endeavor!
The dress turned out amazing and your determination is incredible. Love your work!
This video is absolute chaos, and I love it! I was TERRIFIED watching you iron your silk with the frying pan. Bonus points for ingenuity. I'm amazed and in awe of your dedication and can do attitude.
The purple silk is a beautiful fabric, and helped the dress look so nice. It was fun watching your enthusiasm for the project, but a bit hard to watch your anxiety insomnia 😬 Thank you for showing people that you don't need dedicated pattern weights! Multi-purpose household items all the way.
It is staggering how beautiful that silk is! I can only imagine how smashing it looks in person!
that mockup you made that is at about 10:20 that would make a great Summer dress, Just an idea!
Wow. I cannot believe you powered through so much. What a feat and a beautiful dress still came out the other side. I make wayy too many mistakes when I'm tired.
Things I love about this video:
-that mockup is adorable (!!!) it would be such a pretty summer dress
-dog slurping noises
-that silk is gorgeous that color is so yum. Yum.
-RetroClaude!!!! I love her
-pressing with a skillet!!! Where there’s a will there’s a way
-your wall clock ‘tis peak
-4 am sewing I don’t envy you but I feel you
-the sound of your sewing machine. Purrrrrr
-oh look! Thank god I’m not the only one using knitting needles as hair sticks
So proud for you! Was stoked that Claud is going to the ball too. She had mentioned going to a ball but knowing it’s the same ball as yours is awesome! 🎉 You know a project is never complete without a pet scan. 🐶 Love your new ironing technique! Sending best wishes from Down Under 🥰💖💐🌸🌺🇦🇺😎
Oh my that was a video! I’m so very tired just watching and hearing about your late nights!! Watching you ironing with an iron pan was equal parts brilliant and terrifying!
From what we’ve seen so far it’s all looking very stunning! Love the fabric
This is such an interesting series! I love your balll gown and cant wait to see the other objects you'll be making! I'd love to see the ones for your mom as well!
It looks amazing!!
That nice rustling sound taffeta makes has a name - it's called scroop!
I too know the pain of a power cut when creating to a deadline. In Februay, I was embroidering a coat to wear to an Art Deco festival that week when a cyclone took out the power for 5 days. I'm only now getting back to working on the coat for a July festival - fingers crossed. Don;t knock your sewing ability. Many of us wouldn't attempt anything like that at all.
The dress is beautiful and the colour is gorgeous! You did such a great job...I hope you finally took a break and got some rest 💕
I’m living out my Little Women fantasies through you! ❤ As a kid I was obsessed with the books and the 90s version of the movie. I always wanted to dress up like them 😭
Wow! Two of my favorite RUclipsrs in one video! And that purple fabric is absolutely gorgeous😍
You're always so ambitious! But you always make it work! Can't wait to see the whole thing! (About to go click the next video in the series right now.) I miss Claude when she's not able to post for a while, so it was so LOVELY to see her show up here. She's always a delight!
Unbelievable! I loved your opening comment, so breezily said 'today I'm making a ball gown' 😂😂 like it was a little skirt or something.
And I also really enjoyed your call with Claude - I love her videos too - maybe you two could keep up the collabs?
Anyway, looking forward to all the ball garments. You are so impressive, with your 'I'm not very confident' sewing skills!!
For your future outages, since you have a gas stove, you can heat the water for your hair wash. You’ll just need a basin to wash your hair upside down. I’m sure you have something around to use as a basin.
Littler love the knitting needles as hair sticks❤
I just watched RetroClaude drafting her balk gown bodice. She’s very talented at fitting and modifying patterns.
Try using a length of cheap cotton muslin or a length of an old percale bed sheet as a pressing cloth. It'll catch the smudges instead of your working fabric.
Video calls to correct fit issues... yeah, done that...
I hope you recovered from this project in time to properly enjoy the event!!
Purple shot silk is on my bucket list... yours looks amazing!
yay--you AND @retroclaude! i've been watching her for quite some time--love her channel. so thrilled you're friends/working together/supporting each other. she's def someone i'd love to have a cup of tea with. :)
Aww that fabric is adorable! I'd totally make that wearable lol!
I have just watched both these videos and it is insane how much you managed to achieve in a week. And the results are gorgeous.
Wow, especially the sewing & ironing with no electricity. I used to have a propane camping lantern, which gave lots of light during power outages. One of my 3 Singer sewing machines is a human-powered hand-crank sewing machine-I might buy another camping lantern just in case!
I LOVE analogic, specially non eletric machinery. They last forever and you can use in any circumstances. Love the cast iron pan hack, I'll try myself here too, it probably work as good as a proper cast iron clothing iron.
I love visiting with Retro Claude
I love your pink sweater you wear in the opening shots.
Victorian sewing machine attachments are the BEST!!! I have a couple of their modern equivalents because I don't currently have the space for my treadle where I live, but they're much harder to use. Still better than doing long hemmed ruffles by hand though
I can attest that it is even more stunning irl! Kudos to you taking apart that Bertha again - I made mine separately on a thin cotton backing that I'd already fitted to the dress so in the end mine is only tacked to the neckline. Did you find any issues after the ball? On a rear photo I saw my top hook and eye had come undone allowing a little gaping at the top of the lacing - it's now changed so should stay shut for its next outing later this year! Looking forward to seeing the next installment 😊
Chaos sewing adventures!!
I like your style, in all senses of the word.
Absolutely beautiful gown. I love the colour. Can’t wait to see the finished piece. And to have my two favourite vintage knitters in the same video was amazing.
Beautiful work. Really. Thanks for ALL that you are doing. Brings more beauty to the workd.
Amazing job! I wish you have shown more on making that hook and eye closure at the back... 😊 I'd love to know how it's made!
I had no idea shot silk was two different colours! Awesome series, thanks so much for sharing! 👍
I love the color of the silk you chose
Thank you for leaving in some of that beautiful ticking 💞 it looks great so far! I did cringe and hold my breath when you didn't use a pressing cloth, but was so relieved when it turned out fine and problem free! It felt like a full on cliff hanger!!
I hope you keep the cute fabric mock up😍 I want to buy that fabric LOL
Claude!!! 😁😁
Aww! I love my Wilcox and Gibbs machine! Let me know if you run into supplies for it! Beautiful work!
It's looking great. Love the iron tip! Hehehehehee
If that's a Laughing Moon pattern, I can see why you'd end up with so much excess fabric. We bought their pack of two corset patterns with chemise/drawers patterns, and Lord. When we tried making the gored corset, the first draft had to be practically cut IN HALF it was so big... which is ***immensely tedious*** when you're working on something like a corset, which is a series of delicately-shaped panels.
Every pattern in the pack was a nightmare to work with, even for my mom, an experienced sewist. TT_TT
I would love to see a top hat on Nutella, he would be a great companion to the ball!
It was cool to see you change little bits of the mock ups till you to exactly the fit you were looking for!
Charming
Looking fabulous.
I am impressed!
15:25 Way back in middle school, the tip of one of my bamboo knitting needles started to splinter and I had to throw it away. Its orphaned partner has been a hair stick ever since.
Wow! You are so talented and creative!
It’s exciting to see this ensemble come together!
This is brilliantly done! I love watching you work. It's so cosy and stimulating 😊
The fabric for that second mock-up…at 9:30…I have sheets like that for my bed! I love it, too.
The glasses look so cool! Love how the dress turned out!
Wow! Thank you for sharing your journey!❤
Noises that are always welcome on videos:
- Any animal noises
- Comedically timed police sirens
Gorgeous dress. Im trying to get a beginner pattern for socks
Maravilhoso! Adorei a cor, o tecido, o modelo. E ainda continuo muito apaixonada pela sua linda maquina de costura!
I. Love crochet when I get a garment article that is 1/2 inch. Small my heart doesn't vrace but jumps I shall have a on shoulder crochet incert ; is that crochet correct to shoulder messure? I ' m already near dressing that gown good luck girl not my norm so I here to fore apologize it will turn out lovely..bye
