I'm gonna say Sony did not pay tons and tons of cash to only be able to put Disney's catalog out on physical media only, - over the next 30 years just to stop making the thing to play them on...

I am not a gamer, so my first DVD player was a JVC and then a Sony with progressive scan. Blu-ray was a Sony that is still in the closet. My first 4K was the LG UB870 I got for $45 Cyber Monday morning from Walmart in 2017. I forgot what the price was for Black Friday, but was considerable cheaper and when I saw they lowered the price sop much I jumped on it. I then later got an OLED and bought the LG UBK90 in 2018 as Best Buy had a great deal on it with some free movies to go along with it and it had Dolby Vision for the OLED to take advantage of. I missed the boat on Oppo but I wanted a player that could do all that it could. In 2021 I was an early adopter and bought the Reavon X200. It is a solid player for me. Lately I Rip my discs and use a Zidoo for playback.

It makes me so sad that movies and physical media aren’t as valued as they used to be. I’m so glad I grew up when I did! ❤️

We as physical media collectors do not need LG 4K players to continue our journey. I would never pick LG as a 4K player anyway. Now Panasonic is a different story. And.... Rising prices for 4K Steelbooks. Tariff @25% that worries me and all of us on imports.

I have the LG UBK90. It is a great no frills player. It is cheaper than the Panasonics with Dolby Vision and can play file types the Panasonics can't like MKV with Atmos/DTSX. Compared to the Sony's from what I read on the forums, Sony's freeze on triple layer discs just as or more often than LG and have to do manual switching for Dolby Vision instead of the auto that LG has. There was a place and consumer choice for it in the market.

Part of the player sales problem is the fact they have no updates. Once one has one of the players released in 2017 and it still works today, why buy another? How many would buy a Sony player that matched the quality of their TVs with auto Dolby Vision instead of manual switching and updated disc drive that handles triple layer discs better without freezing? How about a Panasonic that adds SACD & DVD-Audio disc playback and more file support like MKVs with Atmos/DTSX playback? How about one of the smaller, usually unknown brands that do great things but charged in line with the mainstream players instead of the 2-10 times as much as the mainstream players. It may be a small market but I think a market is there for an updated player to us that have players.

I really have no idea what my first Blu Ray player was (prolly LG or Samsung) but I remember my first Blu Ray movie, and that was The Lego Movie 2. Loved the original so much, so naturally I liked the sequel. Nowadays I’m not the biggest fan lol
My first 4K player was the PS5, and I only just started using it as a player this year, and I’m thinking about getting a Panasonic UB450 soon purely so I can take advantage of Dolby Vision

I’d be curious to know the breakdown of sales between DVD, blu ray, and 4K by dollar amount, not by percentage. My guess is that DVD is still shedding the casual consumers while blu ray is probably flat and 4K growing. I’m hoping that 2024 will flatten out and we can settle into a billion dollar collectors market.

Who buys LG or Samsung 4K players? I wouldn't sweat it. We have Sony and Panasonic players.

People still buy vinyl records so the players being made. DVD/bluray/4K has an exponentially larger market

My advice is to keep some back up Players on hand should the laser or drive fail for Example I currently have 3 3D Blu ray players on call should one fail. i have no plans though to Upgrade to 4K so that does not concern me.

First off i really enjoy your show i watch regularly. Around 6:12 you state target. And best buy dont sell players. Thats strange i just purchased a 4K player from best buy ( they do sell them) and a regular sony bluray player from target about 2 weeks ago. Both companies still sell them 🤷🏼‍♂️

But lg was a small part of the player market. Also why would Sony buy media rights to Disney. That doesn’t sound like it’s ending

Probably just means LG has lost the war to Sony Samsung and Panasonic.

You will be able to repair your players. Most likely cheaper than buying a new one.

Philips and Panasonic still deliver wonderful players (almost every year there is a new one) so I'm not worried.
