    I have the exact same sponge filter and a very similar substrate, plus tons of plants so I guess after I come back from holiday I will get some of these ^^

    Great video Grant! I’m using DOOA river soil and I’m getting a PH of 5.0. My imported shrimp are doing amazing with it! It’s my understanding that in Taiwan they keep their tanks at 5.0-5.5 ph

      Yes I’m in Hong Kong and every time I buy high grade shrimp at my local shop the ph is 5.0 in the bag water TDS 100

    Total novice. I went a deep substrate 6 inches, with 1 inch being peat moss, to help with longevity for the soil. Thar, mopani driftwood, and Indian almond leaves all help with my water top ups of tap water... yeah a $600 experiment.

    • @thegardenofeder
      @thegardenofeder  2 года назад +1

      Besides peat moss what else did you use for substrate

    • @kmoore5256
      @kmoore5256 2 года назад +1

      @@thegardenofeder I don't know if it's right but. The bottom layer going up is 1/2inch black sand, inch 2mm pebbles and coal 50/50, inch peat moss, 1/2inch 2mm pebbles, 1.5 inch amazonia soil, 1/2inch 2mm pebbles, 1/2 inch sand.
      There wasn't much I could see on how others have done, so went with that. I see the occasional air pocket release from the substrate. I add an aquarium specific acid to my water top ups for ph. And yes, my next tank is much taller but waiting on space.

    Thank you for the video! I learned something new!
    I’m starting to think my substrate is the problem with my crystal tank. I used Fluval Stratum, and when I used the substrate in the same bag I had weird plant melting (more of an exodus) and I had to dose crazy high amounts of phosphorus to keep my plants happy.
    I live in an apartment and don’t have the space to set up a new tank to let it cycle with the new substrate. How could I reset my tank and let it cycle and keep the shrimp safe and happy? Could they live in a bucket for a month?

    • @thegardenofeder
      @thegardenofeder  3 года назад +2

      If the bucket has a little soil, the right water, and a filter and you do water changes they should be fine in a bucket till you reset the tank

    • @ginnykrudewig5697

      @@thegardenofeder thank you! Should it be new soil or soil from the existing set up in the bucket?

    • @thegardenofeder
      @thegardenofeder  3 года назад +1

      @@ginnykrudewig5697 I would catch the shrimp in a cup or bowl, get the bucket with old substrate and tank water and let it run for a bit till the dust settles before adding the shrimp in. Not new soil

    • @thegardenofeder
      @thegardenofeder  3 года назад +4

      Go slow dont rush it. Its a risky move either way but the slower you take things the better

      @@thegardenofeder Well so far I’ve lost 3/5 of my shrimp, but one of the survivors somehow decided to become berried. Holding my breath. How would I tumble the eggs should I lose this shrimp? Keep in the “old” tank water?

    Great job Grant this video is definitely the most informative video I've ever seen you put out! I use the same britewell substrate and my pH is 5.40 and GH is 4 and TDS is 130ish. Should I change anything to make tank better . Tanks have Crystal's ,Taiwanbees , pintos, fancies, and tigers. They are saddled and buried it appear to be doing great but I'm just wondering if I brought the GH up and the ph up if they would do even better. Along with the substrate I have lots of moss java fern and mopani driftwood.

    Do folks not use ADA Amazonia anymore for substrate?

    • @thegardenofeder
      @thegardenofeder  3 года назад +2

      The original ada was great however they have changed their formula and many people have complained about it turning to mud or not buffering properly. If your lucky enough to find one of the old bags its probably not fresh any holes in the bag will cause it to dry out

    What do you do for if you find a dead shrimp? I had two tanks today each had a dead shrimp? They were doing fine yesterday. What would you do with the tanks? I do not want to react too quickly or drastically. My GH is kept around 4 to 5 and TDS around 120 to 125. Both tanks has had babies. One was a red wine, and the other was a pinto fishbone. Thanks for the great videos.
