I was taught how to eat mango on a beach but this is not what I learned. I was taught to squeeze the mango several times, bite the narrow end (opposite the button), and enjoy a mango skin full of mango purée that you squeeze out. Any mangoes not soft enough to squeeze up were taken home to be sliced and served.
Absolutely 100% accurate for both ways. Softer mangoes are made pulpy by pressing them by hand for e.g. dusherri mango and hard one's are sliced and eaten e.g kesar, Rajapuri,
You can soften the (ripe) mango then bite a tiny hole in the narrow end and using your hands to squeeze, you drink mango nectar. Straight from the mango. Then you can open up the peel, and work on the pit
The way it's done here in India, when you don't wanna cut it, is to take a chunk off at the "button end" as you call it, but before doing that squeeze it around and prep it like a lemon that's about to be squeezed. Then you such the pulp out. Works best with a really ripe mango.
Hey Kenji, that's actually exactly how I eat my dragonfruit as well! Peels away a lot cleaner than the mango too so there's no scraping that needs to be done, and of course there's no pit so you just chomp the whole thing down :)
I wish I could eat a mango someday. I've never seen one in real life. Such is life in the Arctic region. You southerners don't know how lucky you are to have other fruits than just last years apples to eat.

Take a knife and slice horizontal and vertical, making squares....kind of like you would an avocado. -Then you flip the skin inside out where it looks like a porcupine....and the cubes pop right off. I must say it doesn't avoid getting stuck in your teeth that way.
Probably important to note to wash your hands immediately after eating, otherwise enzymes in the mango will begin to eat through your skin. I learned this the hard way...
What I do: First find the center of the mango, next move about a 1/4 inch to the left/right of the center and cut straight down. Now you have 2 halves of mangos and the core. I cut a check board pattern on the mango halves and either eat it with a spoon or just chew it off the skin. I also chew off leftover mango on the core.

Last time I was in Hawaii, we rented a condo that had fruit trees all over the complex. The building manager harvested them and had a big basket of fruit in the front office for free. I ate mango every day I was there. I was taught a slightly less messy technique. Get a soft one and smoosh it all over without breaking the skin until it feels mushy. Then poke a hole in the skin and squeeze the mango into your mouth. Worked pretty good and my hands didn't get sticky.

Here in South India we have this concept of the holy trinity of fruits. We call it "maa-pala-vazhai". Or specifically mango, jackfruit, banana. And these are some of the most powerful and unique flavours in fruits. And all 3 are in season in the summer. You get dozens and dozens of varities of mangoes and bananas. One of the few advantages of the summer. you get bananas in every size. From bananas so tiny you can eat it in a single bite to red bananas and green ones and laaaarge ripe plantains and ones that taste Minty. And mangoes, oh the mangoes. if anyone is wondering, YES, Jackfruit is humongous and yes it Is very spikey and very sticky, but also very tasty. Its not as bad as durian but it smells... A lot... And the smells lingers on eeeeeverything.
