Where I live, B doubles, B triples, double road trains, triple road trains, AB triples, and once in a blue moon a random various quad will thunder down the road just past my house. I take them for granted nowadays, but when I think about it, they really are quite a sight to see. When the big road trains get to a no road trains allowed area, they unhook the trailers which are then taken as singles or B doubles through the mountains, the cities, etc. Cab overs are the preferred truck for city driving, not only because of the much tighter turning arc but also the increased visibility. Any truck driver that doesn't have a nightmarish story to tell about a little car driver changing lanes within a mick hair's distance of the front of the truck hasn't been driving long enough. In a conventional cab, the truck driver may be completely oblivious to a little car pulling in too close in front and run straight into them and might not even notice they're pushing a little crumpled car for quite some distance if they've got a strong enough bull bar and are hauling a heavy enough load. At least in a cab over they can see when a little car driver decides to play chicken with the laws of physics, it might not save the little car from getting crumpled, but the truck driver will at least see that there's a little car stuck on the front of their truck and stop.

Ive been driving road trains for around 20 years On Australian roads we pull up to 4 trailers and on private mining roads we pull up to 6 trailers back when I got all my truck licences I went HR HC and MC and all 3 licences were a 1 day course each but you must have each licence for at least a year before you can upgrade to your next licence the highest licence you can go is MC that's Multiple Combination that means B Doubles to road trains

You were surprised about camels in Australia, they came here many years ago from Afghanistan to open the interior of the country, once they were no longer needed they were set free to roam, which in our deserts they thrive, we actually export camels to the Middle East where they originally came from

Side note as well... The US run 18 wheelers with only ( usually ) double duals on the trailer, in Australia we ( mostly ) run 22 wheelers with ( again.. usually ) triple on the trailer 🤙

The licensing system works differently in Australia. There are a few different classes of truck licenses as well as different endorsements for carrying passengers and the like. You need a truck license to drive anything over 4.5ton GVM. The smallest class of truck license is the LR (light rigid) which allows you to drive up to 8ton GVM or carry upwards of 12 passengers. An MR (medium rigid) license is next which removes the weight limit but restricts the number of axles to 2. Next is an HR (heavy rigid) which removes the restriction on axles. The first “semi-trailer” license is a HC (heavy combination) which enables you to drive a prime mover with a single semi-trailer attached. Lastly is an MC (multi combination) which enables you to tow multiple semi-trailers and bogey-trailer combinations. You must have had a MR or HR licence for at least a year before you can apply for a HC, and an HR or HC for at least a year before you can apply for an MC.

In my home Denmark we have just allowed what is named Modular Trucks, using special allowed roads only. A trailer with and extra specially connected extra trailer behind, being longer than an ordinary trailer.

  • @jennybowd2962

There was the day that single trailers (22 wheels) use to rule the road but now it's mainly b-doubles (1 in that chart)
What I have seen is a driver for a company gets trucks based on their skill, seniority, and driving record/history
Some drivers only want to drive automatic trucks some like the old school manual
    Drivers can be
    - owner operator, own truck and trailer
    - Subbie - own truck pull someone's trailer
    - Employee - work for wage

About 40 years ago I got a class 3 truck licence a few years later when the renuel came in the mail it changed to a 3B then a few more years when it came in the mail it changed again to a HR (Heavy rigid) which is a rigid frame no tractor trailer,
The HR classification is rigid frame any length & any loaded weight. Meaning if someone built a rigid frame 50' long with 10 stear axels & 10 drive axels & a pay load of 100T, I could drive it, but I think such a rig might be hard to get registered.
I only ever drove a light rigid 5T truck with a 8T load. (16 bins of orange's) to the packing shed.

These day's there's a concept called GAV (General Access Vehicle). I think once you get to 30t Gross or 31t Combination it becomes a 'special pupose vehicle' (SPV). At that point it needs special registration/gazetting. Dimensions (width/length) and Overhang can also mean a truck is an SPV not a GAV (I suspect there's rules/limits around axles too - but not sure what they are).
I'm not 100% certain, but I think once it's an SPV not a GAV then simply having the appropriate licence class isn't enough - you need some further permit as well....

You Americans leed such sheltered lives and it's funny to see your reactions when you realize the USA doesn't have the latest- greatest and biggest everything. At 6.55 minutes looks like the east coast USA and at 7.00 minutes is a New Zealand freightliner. I had my own trucks for over twenty years so if you think you are suitable for the job go for it, it's a matter of building your confidence and most modern trucks a hundred and thirty pound girl can drive them. Cheers from NZ 👍

You have to do driving courses done by hours spent training
But must have a smaller or what use guys call box cars for a year before you can go to larger vechiles
It cost me about $1000 to do training over a week for me to get licence for up to 8 tonne carrying weight in total 15 tonne
Then to go larger thousands more
After that to get someone to hire you as lack of experience their insurance is high so can be difficult to get foot in the door
But at moment we have a shortage of drivers so be easier to get someone to take you on normally the company will have someone to take you out and test your safe to hire

Road trains would have been powered by steam only for politicians walking around backwards at the time. A friend of mine designed and built a steamer that was the lowest emission engine in the world. Still is. Took it to America and successfully demonstrated it to vehicle builders and senators from Washington in CA.. They didn't want it. Imagine. A state with some of the most polluted cities in the world. More politicians walking around backwards? He's gone now but won't be forgotten.I tell young up and coming engineers get out of this country fast. People with brains here are regarded as dangerous. Stay away from America. They are still dreaming about turbine cars that were really only good for a museum or the scrap heap.
