Hey RJ. I have about 10 of the conventional run lionel RS-3's. Some are dual motored and some are single can motored engines. It just depends on the model. Some with horns abd some without. The dual motored engines are great pullers and have more weight. Some came with weights and others did not. I added weights to the ones that are too light. I found a good selection of tire weights and magnets I use for weights at Harbor Freight. If I recall correctly it seems the single motored engines are lacking the factory weight segments or it needed additional weights because the factory weights weren't adequate.

I wanted the New Haven rs3 set as soon as I saw it in the catalog for that year. Come Christmas morning and there it was under the tree

put thin coat of JB weld on top of the gear to finish use tooth pick to clean teeth if you get JB in them I'm still looking on line for replacement gear good luck take your time (2016)engine

RS-3 has a plastic 17 tooth drive gear that fails in both trucks that are discontinued, when they fail you have wall art! I fixed mine by drilling the centre of the gear slightly so it didn't spread when on the shaft than cutting the drive shaft with the thinnest Dremel wheel, than thick super glue the crack in the gear ,finally JB weld carfully the gear to the shaft filling the slot in drive shaft

Very good video! I never had room for Lionel trains (I do HO) but the really think I would have more fun with Lionel.

Thank you! If you have the room, O Scale is fun! I prefer the larger scales.

Yes, there is something very special about lionel. Also they feel very real because of their size and they have this weight and this presence that you don't get with HO.

If you will power your rs3 with a regular transformer or a dc pack with up to 20 volts you can turn the voltage to 12-14 and get great lower speed control rather using the wall warts . Just play around with the voltage until you get the slow speed start you want and note that for when you run that loco……

Thanks for the info! I’m going to have to try that. I’m running the engine on a MTH Z1000 so I can adjust the voltage.

@JR, I was just at the Lionel store in Concord, NC on Sunday and purchased the Santa Fe Berkshire from same sale. While there I took advantage of purchasing a number of cars as well. Several hours of shopping and worth every penny, I also found the Norfolk Southern engine I had been looking for.
