Do you think this thing can run on a cw-80 Lionel transformer? I know ps2 and 3 need dcs but I heard that you can run it just conventionally with basic whistle and bell on any transformer but I read that MTH locos don’t like the cw-80 so now I don’t know what to believe

I really liked the F40PH locomotives and it was a schoolmate that introduced me to Amtrak and its trains when he went to Disneyland in Orland, Florida when he rode one of these from New York to Orlando as he called it a "National Express Train" which I think he meant Amtrak as National Express never operated in the US especially in the 1980's. I remember him telling me that these F40PH's was very loud when they were at the station and upon myself learning about American trains is that these use HEP and the power unit has to run on full power to provide electricity to the passenger cars in the train. Ever since back then when he showed me the photos of these F40PH's that was on his train. I fell in love with the EMD F40PH locomotives ever since because they really have a very nice charming look to them and I like these EMD locomotive designs the most. Hi JR, This Amtrak set really hits home for me. When I was little my parents gave me an HO Amtrak passengers set (I asked for a Lionel😥) with this exact engine and 6 cars. I have been looking all over trying to find this phase III paint scheme with the black roof from my memories. I found the 6 passenger cars last week made by MTH. Now just have to get the F40 locomotive to complete my set. Then I will start on building my Catenary system. I have subscribed to your channel and will be following your progress. Frank

Don't care for that mighty sound of steam sound. I saw an engine advertised with it. If I bought it, I'd change it out to that new sound that's out! The name starts with a B, but the name escapes me!

What surface do you use? Is that buffalo snow blanket?

SOS switch on the smoke unit lever I believe is adjustable to make sure the sos has good continuity to the tender. It sounds like it is not making and breaking continuity. Or it could be stuck with smoke oil build up not allowing the lever to cycle properly.

Thanks for the video! I started the hobby collecting post war Lionel engine and rolling stock. Recently I added a Williams GP-38 to my collection and my posstwar is small compared to it. I think I'm going to get some Atlas rolling stock.

They always have been both types of flats and trailers, nothing new here. MTH flats still sit way too high compared to Lionel's PS-4's.

Bought one myself a week ago. Love the F40. Overhere in Europe its hard to get so.. Im very pleased with the purchase 😊

I wanted the New Haven rs3 set as soon as I saw it in the catalog for that year. Come Christmas morning and there it was under the tree

I put an l.e.d. strip in the baggage car and passengers in my santa fe, it may not have all the features of a legacy, but a bit of TLC can make this Santa Fe a very nice set to run.

I have two MTH steamers, I find separating the two much more problematic than connecting the two

I like some of the old MPC Trains 🚂 all that I have left of original MPC is the Complete Mickey Mouse Express, The Southern Crescent and Passenger Cars, and the Blue Comet and Passenger Cars. I sold most of my MPC stuff off and invested the money into modern Lionel and MTH trains. Good review. The mighty sound of steam never sounded good

I bought the same engine and Pat said he made 25 of each Road # . The same amount with the ES44AC and the SD70ace Black Bonnet engines

I was wondering if the break noises are coming from the loco or some station sounds type car? My LC+ 2.0 Berkshire didn't have anything like that, so it would be a neat feature. Great Video!

Check your chuff switch. Could be a loose wire on the switch. Usually located near the drive wheels. That's how they use to be set up in the early 2000s up to 2005 as far as I know. I don't own a legacy engine newer than that

Hey RJ. I have about 10 of the conventional run lionel RS-3's. Some are dual motored and some are single can motored engines. It just depends on the model. Some with horns abd some without. The dual motored engines are great pullers and have more weight. Some came with weights and others did not. I added weights to the ones that are too light. I found a good selection of tire weights and magnets I use for weights at Harbor Freight. If I recall correctly it seems the single motored engines are lacking the factory weight segments or it needed additional weights because the factory weights weren't adequate.
