my only issue with windows on steam deck is the brightness control. somehow it won't let me go dimmer than it should be able to even though it says it's already at 0 brightness. i have to move the slider back and forth to make the screen dim.

I have had Windows 11 on my Steam Deck. It ran fine plus you have the added bonus of a full computer experience when adding a mouse and keyboard. On holidays I bring a portable monitor that can run for hours on a powerbank. Works so nice with the Steam Deck. Still I am on Steam OS now. The reason is the controller. I just can't seem to get a stable situation between Steam and for example Xbox Game pass games. If Steam would just make drivers that work fully under Windows, I'd be on W11 in no time (or if someone knows how to get it work properly).

In my experience, I have gotten it to work fairly consistently, but I start encountering weird issues. If both steam is open while handheld companion is open at the same time if I’m playing a non-steam game, my solution is just to force close Steam through task manager, or shut down Steam through Steam has been a consistent way to get it to work and turning off Start on power in TaskManager preventing steam from opening when you turn on the steam deck helps eliminate that issue but it’s not a 100% fix sometimes I forget or sometimes the mappings are a bit sticky and it doesn’t know that steam was closed so I have to reload the game but in general their minor annoyance is now no longer a game breaking issue

id recommend checking out Steam Deck Tools. Adds a lot of the Steam OS quick menu utility like TDP control, brightness and volume control, display color profile, etc it also adds full system wide controller support for non steam games. it also doesnt have the issue where theres double input. It basically just recognizes the Steam Deck controls as an Xbox 360 or PS4 controller connected to it.

Windows on deck works amazing once you install modded gpu drivers and Handheld Companion, but it takes a while to get it all set up right.
SteamOS is just unbeatable when it comes to power management and that's important for handheld gaming.

Depending on the game, it could be kind of Jenkee all really depends on how the game handles being minimized. For example, Minecraft handled it fine but games like Jedi order for me at least didn’t like getting minimized and occasionally would crash once resuming the game, but that solved by keeping the game in window to full screen mode.

This is an important project, you are doing something that needs to be done! Windows is way more useful than SteamOS in gaming and everything else. I've heard of Handheld Companion too. I'd want a Steam Deck if Windows worked properly on it, the 4 paddles on the back give the deck the most flexible input scheme, the touch pads aren't totally neccessary, but there they are.

You obviously don't have a steam deck or you wouldn't say the touchpads aren't necessary. People know extremely little to nothing about SteamOS or Linux in general to be making those claims

      2. Linux is superior to Windows in terms of Performance, Privacy, and Security. Any game will perform better on Linux than Windows. It's the ideal gaming OS. And with SteamOS, Linux-Gaming is even more possible and will only get better
Touchpads are completely necessary. Especially if it's got a PC OS. No PC OS, even Bloatware 11, has a good enough interface for touch use

I would use the performance rendering option, all low, basically and increasing the UMA in the steam decks bios to four gigs. It’s basically increasing your video memory from the one gig. You usually have reserved when you’re in windows to four, which you should see a noticeable increase in basically, any game you play this is because the steam deck went in windows has one gig V ram, and then uses your SSD for swapping memory around and that is much slower and can decrease your performance.

Eh, it’s not the end of the world if you consider wanting Windows on your Steam deck, I have and it runs beautifully and perfectly, I play rdr 2 with a keyboard and mouse and also to have that laptop feel (yes, I’m aware Steam OS has a built-in Desktop Mode but I like browsing in Windows). But if you don’t know how to install or dual-boot Windows, ask a tech expert for help, that’s what I did when I got my Steam Deck. I got it along with a Windows dual-boot, loving it ever since.
EDIT: I have graphical mods with fairly ultra graphics settings, few lag spikes but I was able to finish the quest “Banking The Old American Art” or something like that. That place is in saint denis and there were a lot of lawmen so you’d expect it to be super laggy but no it wasn’t, although, it did crash when it tried to load guarma, that’s because I’ve been playing rdr 2 for a long time, and when I was doing that mission Micah had A bowl cut 💀. Anyways it said something about a memory error but I know the reason because after it crashed, I did the whole mission again, and there were no graphical issues no Micah with bowl cut (💀) and when I reached the part where It crashed, it didn’t crash. So, I recommend just a few graphical mods to make your rdr 2 look better, and also download a config from nexus mods called “GTX 1650 Config”, the GTX 1650 is the equivalent to the Steam Deck so don’t worry if it will lag a lot. I know this is like a super long edit but I just wanted to share my experience with graphical mods in rdr 2, hope y’all do this too, it’s really fun.

Other than that, you're just gonna get worse performance and battery life than with SteamOS

I've had Windows 11 on mine since launch and it's been perfectly fine. I've never had any control issues. Sounds like you're not choosing appropriate controller layouts. You installed new drivers, didn't check settings, and complain about performance. So you just had settings reset. This review is mostly disingenuous imo.

Apologies it’s been four months since I made this video so if I get some details wrong bear with me the control issues I was having was with non-steam games every steam game I played worked perfectly no controller problems whatsoever but the moment I went and tried to play games from the epic game store or gog i ran into some problems but as I mentioned in the video, I did eventually figure it out. I still use windows on my steam deck. Any of the issues I did have I have fixed that was kind of the point of the video is talking about the issues I had and then how I fixed it and some of the problems I had were kind of dumb and I’m not an expert on the topic, but I was sharing my personal experience. When I installed the latest drivers, I ran into performance issues in certain games. The one that immediately came to mind was the most parent to me because the game I played the most is Destiny 2. I tried all sorts of things, but it just for some reason Destiny 2 went from running spectacular to choppy and I don’t blame valve necessarily for that. I blame AMD because I had experiences in past using AMD graphics cards on desktop that would run into the same issue some games don’t like some drivers. It’s just amd quirkyness and not the steam deck specifically I don’t know if I said that explicitly in the video. Like I said I still use windows on my steam deck to this day. How I fixed my driver issue wasn’t resetting the whole thing it was just ddu Then just installed the last driver that ran Destiny 2 specifically the Best, which was at the time the previous driver hopefully this gives you a little bit more insight into my thought process

@@JustSomeJacob The store shouldn't matter. The games would just use whatever joystick is available. If the Steam Controller is in the devices section of the control panel it's available to all software. It's the same as using a desktop. Did you only test Destiny 2? It's an online game, maybe the issue was networking related?

I’d rather use SteamOS, Windows is jank.

I would agree to an extent, but at least the windows can be fixed or mitigated fairly easily any jank you come across in SteamOS is usually really hard to get past or really annoying, if you aren’t proficient, or have some level experience with Linux, which isn’t particularly common but if you’re doing strictly surface level things, and you don’t ever need to go into desktop mode yeah it’s better but for me, that just wasn’t the case

Absolutely, SteamOS / Linux is way better for gaming, it's much more flexible and actually built for the deck. I'd never replace SteamOS with Windows on the deck for sure but to each their own.

Use Windows 10 LTSC. Windows 11 is rly bad, especially for gaming. Windows 11 LTSC won't be available until Autumn 2024

@@timokins. IDK how to set up Windows on a handheld. IDK if it's the same as a laptop/desktop or not. I know it has its issues or something. I don't plan on downgrading to Windows from SteamOS when I get a Deck, either

I think I will try getting a 1tb ssd and dual partition it. I have an SD card in all ready. Use for batocera.
