Thank you for pointing out the benefits of being a Superuser and being able to participate in a GO LIVE session of a new EMR system. You are right in that a SUPER USER should be a part of that event b/c you learn a lot! You have answered the questions that I had about the role a SUPERUSER plays in the GO LIVE event👍🏾
Med/Surg Unit Coordinator here 🙌🏽 Not too big on becoming a nurse, but definitely interested in Informatics and HIM. I want to learn more about Epic. I wasn’t too familiar with Cerner.
Hey! 😊 I see a lot of health informatics jobs out there! I’ve only had a little experience with Epic but I hear that people love it. Cerner is good once you get familiar with it but some people find it difficult to navigate.
I’m a rehab therapy tech and currently in my masters program for healthcare informatics. I am seeking a role in my hospital (#1 trauma center). We are rolling new fall prevention implementations and I became a super user under nursing. Not sure how I will join their team as an analyst but I’m so excited and grateful to find you channel! New subbie🎉
That’s great!!! There are many people on my team that are analysts with different healthcare backgrounds! Definitely apply if a position becomes available.
Thank you soo much for your video. I am currently 100% remote as UM RN. I have been considering MSN Informatics but have been trying to gain more insite.
I've had to be pushy to get to be a super user for our refuel, i got on the informatics committee and learned I can be a SU for an area outside of my unit (our unit's SUs were ear marked by being in the documentation committee, so I was given a no there). I haven't started the SU meetings yet, but I'm getting there. I'm going to shadow our CIO and a current IN as well.
Congratulations and thank you for sharing. I'm currently a Quality Review Nurse and contemplating Informatics. Any incite on the similarities with quality vs informatic? I have tons of experience with HCHB, Wellsky and Kinser.
Thank you! I hope you found this video helpful. Quality Review has a lot of similarities because one of the goals is to improve patient care and outcomes with workflow. With your background you will be an asset to discussions on how to improve the EMR systems in order to improve navigation of the system and workflows for the nurses and doctors. Plus having the experience with different applications is a plus. With informatics you’ll be hands on in building and maintaining the system.
Is there a way to get scholarships for msn nursing informatics? Do you think cloud computing is important in nursing informatics? Congratulations on the new role!🎉
Thank you! I haven’t seen scholarships but I’m sure it’s some out there. Check to see if your job has tuition reimbursement. That should help out with tuition. From my experience so far you don’t need to know to much details about cloud computing. My institution focuses more of the background build of the EMR system and making the front end for the user easy to navigate. Cloud computing is needed for just general IT. I hope this helps.
Thanks for this video! Im currently working as a UM nurse virtually. I hold mg MSN in leadership&management 😩 but interested in informatics. Do you think I could transition to informatics or would I need to return to school for informatics first?
Hey! I think you can definitely transition into informatics without going back to school. I know a few individuals without informatics degrees. If your institution has an informatics committee, definitely join. Also, if you see any job postings, apply. UM and any nursing background is a benefit for informatic nursing.
Hi! I didn’t take any extra courses besides getting my masters in informatics, but I would encourage you to seek informatics committee at your place of work if they have it. Also, just apply for informatics roles. Employers like nurses with clinical experience. You’ll learn the role once you start. I hope this helps.
I’ve been a med surg tele nurse for 2 years now. I love being a nurse but it’s draining me so much. Lately I’ve been looking into informatics and eventually getting my MSN. I was wondering what’s the job project for it?
Hey! I understand how you feel! Nursing informatics has grown so much in the past 5 years! According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of health information technologists, which includes nurse informaticists, is projected to grow 17% from 2021 to 2031, much faster than the average for all occupations.
Hey! Hope all is well! It would be beneficial to have at least a year at bedside because it would make you more marketable in nursing informatics when applying for jobs. Not unless you have a background in IT already.
Hi, thank you for your insight and your tips! Congrats on your success thus far :) Do you believe a degree in informatics with a BSN is needed in order to transition into the informatics field? I have been a nurse for 8 months so far. I had my MHA before obtaining my BSN. Thanks in advance!
Hey! I’m glad the tips were helpful! I don’t think you need a degree in informatics. There are a few people on my team who doesn’t have a degree in informatics. However, I do think it will make you more marketable if that’s your goal. In the meantime, I would join a informatics council at your institution if they have one.
Hello! thank you for explaining this. You mentioned you've been a nurse for 10 years. Do you think the amount of years someone has in bedside experience matters before transitioning?
Hey! No problem! I hope you found it helpful. No, the amount of years doesn’t matter. But I would say have at least 2-3 years of clinical experience is helpful when interviewing.
Hello luv, I am interested in nursing informatics. I have 2 questions, can I get state certified with my RN only if I don’t have my MSN? I mean I have a Bachelors in IT and my MBA. Also, how do I become a super user?
Hey! In order to become certified in nursing informatics you would need to have practiced a minimum of 2,000 hours in informatics nursing within the last 3 years; or Have practiced a minimum of 1,000 hours in informatics nursing in the last 3 years and completed a minimum of 12 semester hours of academic credit in informatics courses that are part of a graduate-level informatics nursing program; or Have completed a graduate program in informatics nursing containing a minimum of 200 hours of faculty-supervised practicum in informatics nursing If your hospital has a informatics committee, you can see if you can join and also become a super user to your EMR system.
Hello, question....I feel like I have taken the long road to nursing informatics. I am an LPN in school for Health Information Management then I will go back for my masters in Informatics. Can I still be a Informatics nurse? Any tips on how to better strategize my journey? Help please lol, I'm 40 and trying not to be in school for the rest of my life 🙏🏽 Currently I work from home chronic Care Manager
Hi! If you are going for your health information management, you may not need to go for your Masters. Working strictly from home may delay your process. Does your company have an informatics committee? If so, you should join. Who educates staff on your EMR system? Try to find that contact so you can get involved. You never know, a position may open up and you’ll be the first to call. A masters isn’t required but it does make you more marketable.
@@dopenursingish thank you so much. I will reach out to the EMR team at my job they mentioned we will be switching patient chart systems so I will ask them about becoming a super user as well. Thank you 🙏🏾

I am currently a teacher and I am looking to transition to Nursing and I like the idea of informatics. Can you point me in a direction of the process of how to get there. College or University do I have to do clinical nursing to do informatics ?
Hi! Hope all is well! The first thing you would need to do is get into a nursing program. Depending on where you live, you can go to your local community college. There are online nursing programs such as excelsior.edu and you can do your whole program online but would need to attend clinical sites that the school provides. Once you complete nursing school and pass your state boards, experience in acute care is preferred then you can start looking into nursing informatics. Most hospitals have a nursing informatics department.
Hi, I am ER nurse for 2 years. Is it necessary to have nurse background in med surgery or acute care to be nurse informatics? Do you think is it better to join in person MSN informatics college to learn skills and IT stuff? I also heard that it’s not easy to get nurse informatics job. Does it take many years to get job in that field?
Hi! Yes it’s definitely a benefit to have a background in med surgery or acute care. It helps you to be able to assist with the workflow in the EMR system. I went online to GCU for my Masters in Informatics. You’ll learn the actual skill on the job. Hi you don’t need to get your masters to work in informatics. But in order to work remotely, you will need some in office experience. If you currently work at a hospital you should see if there is an informatics committee and join that. That will give you an idea of what goes on in the workflow for informatics nurses and teams.
Hi! If your place of work doesn’t offer classes on your EMR system, you can look into obtaining your Masters degree in Nursing informatics. Or you can join the informatics committee if your job has one.
Information systems is a bit different from nursing informatics. Nursing informatics specifically deals with the electronic medical record system and other systems that affect the clinical side of the hospital. Information systems is broad and covers many systems.
