Review of the Morihei Karasu

  • Here's my review of the Morihei #9000 grit Japanese whetstone. I used it right out of the box initially by touching up my Filarmonica straight razor. I then lapped the stone and again used the same razor and you can actually hear an audible difference in the feedback. What I was trying to show was the importance of lapping a new stone. I also touched up one of my favourite kitchen knives - Masakage Koishi Gyuto. I got a mirror finish on the bevels of both blades. I would recommend this stone for both straight razors and kitchen knives. However most users would not need a #9000 grit stone for their daily kitchen knives. I also mentioned that if you have a 4k/8K combo stone you most likely would not need a premium polishing stone like this as the 8K side will pretty much do the same thing as a 9K stone.

Everything in the kitchen can be cut with 1000 grit, or soft Arkansas stone. Just need good technique but yes I do go up to 5k every time because it's shiny and lasts longer. :D

Hi! Is this stone a good finisher to have a comfortable shave? Thanks from Italy!😊👍

Interesting stone. Doesn't really sound like a 9k stone even after lapping. Still sounds a bit aggressive for a 9k. I have a natural karaso, not cheap at all but one of my favorites. Very interesting.

Can you compare 12000 Morihei to 16000 Shapton glass? What about buying both and try on the same razor?😮

9000 grit? that's an odd number.... And that's not real karasu, is a synethic....

It is a synthetic but it's a called a karasu because of the special blend not because it's a natural stone. There's no reason why a grit can't be 9000.
