SOTD Using El Diablo Straight Razor
It's a week before CNY and I haven't posted a video is quite a while so I thought I would do one today. This is just a quick video showing how I use a straight razor. I only did two passes because I didn't want to strip away too much of my skin since it's mid-winter in Canada and the air is super dry.

How have you found the edge retention for your knives with your chopping board setup? I have got the masakage koishi gyuto - I have also got a bamboo chopping board. I have found that this combination produces terrible edge retention. I believe this is Because the Janka hardness of the bamboo being 1380 with a combination of the Formaldehyde glue which is used to join the bamboo strips in the board. As being a furniture maker myself and noticing that Formaldehyde glue layers in laminate plywood will wear out channels in tungsten carbide cutters I use. It got me thinking about why this knife looses an edge so rapidly on the bamboo board. I also thought about edge retention on my chisels which will generally be sharpened to a razor edge, because you never know when you might need a beard trim! =D. I find on poplar [540 Janka] the edge will stay sharp for a noticeably longer period than if say i was paring back european oak [1120 Janka]. Because of this study I have decided to order a single piece of Kiso-Hinoki which is 510 Janka. The wood grain also has high elasticity properties which is meant to help with edge retention.

Bamboo is not good as chopping board material ..... will decrease edge retention and can cause chipping on Japanese knives with their increased hardness levels and thin edges Do not use it there are much better options

@chrisbosman3372 I have had a kiso hinoki chopping board imported in from Japan, which i have been using for a few months. The edge retention for my masakage koishi is now great.

Interesting stone. Doesn't really sound like a 9k stone even after lapping. Still sounds a bit aggressive for a 9k. I have a natural karaso, not cheap at all but one of my favorites. Very interesting.

Ugh ....fake shinogi line made by etching instead of the art of proper sharpening technique ..............but still no knife deserves to be used on a bamboo board, especially a Japanese aogami steel knife can chip on this board ...............in the instructions you show is clearly written in the third paragraph of USE: Your cutting surface is the biggest culprit of duling your knife. Use wood. End grain wood is especially good. Plastic can be fine too, but CERTAINLY NOT glass, granite or BAMBOO. ...............real question: ARE YOU IGNORANT?

Try using more of a shallow angle. You will find that the shaves will improve & there will be less irritation. Check out Lynn Abraham's & Dr Matt's tutorials. I've been using a straight on a daily basis since the 1980s. & Using skin stretching & a shallow angle has improved my shaves & made my edges last longer. Keep it up as it's the best way to shave.

Thanks for taking the time to shoot such a detailed video! I'm new to straight razor shaving with only two attempted shaves under my belt so far. The experience has been a frustrating and humbling, but your video has inspired me to press on. I still haven't succeeded with shaving my full chin without falling back to my double-edge safety razor. I'm a thin man with a concave area under my angular chin, so I think I will have to get creative with my angles and how I stretch my skin. Watching all the angles you use has given me confidence to keep experimenting to find what works for me.
