Why is the Crescent & Star on so many Muslim Flags?

  • Another question on the problem with the Crescent and Star came from a viewer known as 'Truth Seeker', who stated, "I’m a Muslim, and the crescent is not Islamic symbol and it’s not of Islamic origin. What Jay Smith is saying is true. This video is informative and was to the subject. While seeing a lot of comments it seems a lot of non-Muslims and maybe Muslims thought it was Islamic, which is understandable since it was used by some Muslim countries in the last century. But it has nothing to do with Islam. The usage and adaptation is due to the country itself, and their own needs. Saying Islam took it is also wrong. The crescent is adapted by non-Muslims to identify Muslims but was not accepted for a long time (not until 1844 AD), and then was adapted by some Muslim countries [in the 20th century). This doesn’t make it Islamic either, because it simply does not have any religious significance, and Muslims should be encouraged not to use it."
This is indeed an understandable mistake by Muslims and non-Muslims alike; namely, the Crescent and Star have nothing really to do with Islam, and this we now know because the coins from the 7th century clearly show that the Crescent and Star is a Sassanian, Persian symbol.
But that then 'begs the question'; namely, what is the true Islamic symbol?
Christians have a cross as their symbol because it has enormous significance to us, since it was on the cross that our Lord Jesus died, and it is because of the cross that we can have salvation.
But it's not just Christians who have important symbols to represent them. The Hindus have the Om sign, used as a mystic syllable, considered the most sacred mantra by Hindus.
Buddhists employ the 8-spoked DharmaChakra wheel to signify the eight-fold path to enlightenment, while the Jews have the star of David as their symbol.
However, not to be left out, isn't the Crescent and Star now the symbol of Islam? If not, then why have so many Muslim countries put the Crescent and Star on many of their flag?
Furthermore, what religious meaning does it have? There is nothing of any religious significance written about the Crescent and Star in the Qur'an, nor in the later Islamic Traditions; so, why has it now been adopted since the 19th century as Islam's universal symbol?
If it's merely political, then why don't Muslims say so, and tell us what exactly does it signify politically?
    Over to you Muslims...

I remember a Muslim telling me in the late 1980s where I worked that the Quran had been perfectly preserved in every detail, which was totally unique compared to other religions. Back then we didn't have the internet and there wasn't really much information to find out if what he was saying was true. He use to tell me about the scientific predictions and even that there was some sort of connection between Islam and Nostradamus! I find your videos fascinating please keep up the good work!!

Muslims Eid celebration starts after the sight of Crescent moon. Every month of Muslims starts with a crescent moon. You said cross is the symbol of Christianity because Jesus died on it (Nauzubillah) but does bible mention it to adopt it as your sign? Crescent's sightings bring happiness for Muslims by starting the Holy Month of Ramadan and by starting the celebration of Eid, by starting the Pilgrim month of ZulHaj and so on, so some of the Muslim Countries adopted it as a sign and with passage of time it becomes a sign to represent Muslims. It has nothing to do with our religion and no Muslim ever claimed it. In-fact we Muslims prefer Arabic Calligraphy over any sign.

@Rossana Palombo In the Hebrew Bible, the phrase used in Isaiah 14:12 is 'Heylel ben sahar', the ancient Hebrew name for the planet Venus as the Morning Star. (If the Hebrew phrase seems so similar to the Arabic, that's because both are Semitic languages)
This was then translated in the Greek Septuagint as 'heosphoros', the ancient Greek name for the planet Venus, the Morning Star.
Roman Catholic scholars translated this phrase in the Latin Vulgate as 'Lucifer', the ancient Roman name for Venus the Morning Star.
The modern New International Version translates it as... wait for it...... morning star.

While Islam does not have a symbol, there is no restriction on flag representation as many centuries of Islamic caliphates used different flags. While the crescent moon and star are not a religious/ theocratic symbol in Islam, its association with the Ottoman Caliphate made it a symbol of Muslim solidarity worldwide.

From the Ancient times, the symbol of the Contantinople city was white cresent moon with white eight pointed star on red field. When Ottomans conquered the City, they takeover the symbol with some modification (eight points star become five points star). At the begining, this modified symbol was just the State's or the ruler's symbol, later on it adopted as religios symbol. Taking that the Ottoman imperia during 19th century and at begining of the 20th one was the most powerful islamic state in the World, many islamic countries in next decades adopted the same symbol as "proof" of its devoty to the islam. I am sure that hystorians can confirm that the cresent moon with star was first time used as islamic symbol by Ottoman Turks, but after 1453 AD, when the City was conquered.
By the way, from the times of Bysantine imperia, the original symbol (white cresent moon with white eight pointed star on red field) was the symbol of Holy Virgin Mary, mother of our Lord Jesus Christ! It measn that cresent moon with the star is wrong used Christian symbol in the islam during the centuries! 🤫

What I could understand the usage of the crescent-moon symbol in majority Muslim country is to show the closeness the country to the Ottoman Empire that used to be during Ottoman Empire limelight. Most of the Muslim empire like Moghul and Malacca (14-16 centuries) was under the Empire of Ottoman with some authority given to govern their own land, and most o the Muslim empire fall was due to unattachments towards Ottoman Empire/ colonized by Europe country. To express the symbol to proud and historic limelight of the new nations that free from the colonization the idea of relationship with Ottoman Empire they crescent-moon is used to express the country could be successful again as what the nation used to be during Ottoman Empire.

Jay, you know why the crescent is used. Allah is the ancient Arabian moon-god. The crescent is the crescent moon and has been used in images of many different moon gods and goddesses for thousands of years. The Egyptians had a moon God as well as the Babylonians. Moon god and goddess worship was common in the Middle East among many cultures. The sun gods were typically male while the moon gods were typically female. Allah must have had a sex change somewhere along the line.

The Crescent is symbol of Ramadan and the star is symbolic of the five pillars and five prayers. It has nothing to do with religious symbolism. The reap religious symbol is probably the green flag. The Crescent was used by some Arab tribes to represent them. It was also used by the Mamelukes before the Ottomans. Yes it has more of political and a representation to Islam rather than religious. The Crescent however was always used as a symbol for Ramadan, the star was later added. Its more of representative symbol rather than a religious one. Shia Muslims might use it for a larger Islamic context but they always use the Zulfiqar as their symbol.

  • @MustafaAli-lb8dq

The crescent moon is a symbol of a start of new month in the islamic calendar so technically its islamic while the star has no significance. The only reason why the star is used is because the Ottomons used it. The reason why the ottomons used star is because star has 5 points which refers to "5 pillars of islam". Islam has many rules but following the 5 pillars classify you as a muslim. Plus only using a moon feels empty so moon and star go together. This is why it's used in many muslim countries flag.
Secondly, in Islam what is prohibited is prohibited by muslims and what is not prohibited is allowed by muslims. But if something is not mentioned in Quran, then there is nothing wrong to adopt it. It's not a sin.

judges 8:22-26 Ishmaelites were known for their ear-rings and crescent-moons. In nations using astronomy/astrology, the moon had a significant role in the night sky. Bowing to the moon goddess (or other pagan gods, like the "daughters of allah" (which are also featured on muslim pageantry)) was a common pagan practice that God "Yahweh" had to warn His people about (Deut:4:19). The whole Ka'aba and the meteorite worship is set up in a traditional sense of sun/moon/star worship (perambulating the shrine like the planets, kissing the black meteorite, the "image" that fell down from heaven). BTW, thinking about "seeker's" question, was the LATER "Islamic" prohibition on the use of images used to hide the idolatrous sources of the made-up "muslim" "religion"?

And wasn't one of the Baals of the Canaanites the moon god? Else why would they name their city Jericho after the moon god? Why do the muslim temples have crescent moons on them? Why do muslim Emirs, use the symbol of of the crescent moon and star, just like muslim countries, today? Why do muslims celebrate the feast of Al-Fitr, the month long feasting/fasting festival of the moon god, copied from Al-Feter of the moon god festival from the city of the moon god called Harran? Why does the koran say don't do something, and then promote it, somewhere else? Why can't it be consistent if it came from heaven -- can't they get things straight up there? Or was the koran created by committee? God bless you!

Indeed, the true and only Islamic symbol in existence is the sentence that Saudi Arabia puts on its flag, and it is the same sentence that the Prophet Muhammad put on the flag
The crescent and star are not a religious symbol. It is a
political symbol of the damned and bloody Ottoman Sultanate. As for the reason for its borders on the flags of other countries such as Algeria, Tunisia, and Pakistan ... etc. it is because of the British and French after they decided to end their colonization of those countries, because they were the ones who drew their independence flags and they took The crescent and star of the Turkish flag as an indication that they are Islamic countries, it is not the Algerians, Pakistanis, Tunisians and others who chose their flags, or even the symbols on which the British and French had chosen them, and I think that the inhabitants of these countries after nearly 100 years of growing up on this flag and with this symbol found themselves defending an illusion They have attached themselves to it

God always reveals to whom he chooses in due time. Many times we have these symbols amongst us and don't have the understanding of them. Example: You mention the Bible and the Cross? Is it Godly? Did Jesus choose the Cross? Or did his enemies choose it for him? Islam simply means to submit to God. If you read your Bible you would see reference to the Sun, Moon, and Stars in it a few times. Why is this never talked about in the Church?
In the book of Revelations, John saw a great wonder in heaven. A woman clothed with the Sun, the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of 12 stars. The so-called Muslim that asked the original question is not in touch with his creator nor his Quran. Clearly Allah created the Sun, Moon and Stars to submit to his will. Islam means submission. There is much wisdom on the Sun, Moon and Stars in the Holy Quran. In fact, there are entire chapters on the Sun, Moon, and Stars. Likewise, in the Bible there is so much to be learned on this subject. Jesus is seen as the "Sun of Righteousness," and the "Morning Star." What does this mean? The "Wise Men" saw Jesus coming by observing a Star in the East. Surely you wise men can explain why Jesus is referenced by terms associated with the Islamic Fag.

No one says it is an Islamic symbol. I don't know why your so serious about it xD. The founder of Pakistan thought highly of Atta Turk who made the modern day Turkey. Maybe the people were just influenced by them. Who knows.

Interestingly, there is some reference that the crescent moon has meaning in both The Prophet Muhammad and in Allah . For according to the Quran ( I don't remember the verse ) when Muhammad came to Medina and sacked it , the Hindus were worshiping many gods there : and Muhammad had his forces destroy all the idols except one idol , and this was a Moon God that would later be named Allah. Also as we know, the 🌘 is the First Phase of the moons seasonal Four Phase change through the year , so if the Ottoman Empire made it into a flag symbol in 1844, I wonder could they have been alluding to a deeper ancient meaning for Muslims ?

We don't worship the sun or moon or other creation, we worship the creator of the sun moon and everything, we worship the one God of Abraham (As.). Sun an Moon are object of astrological and spiritual reality. In Sufism Moon represent the divine reality of the Mind and Sun represent the divine reality of Atom, Solar System, Black Hole, The Kaba in holy city of Mecca, Heart. Just like in atom every electron is circumambulating the nucleus of proton and nutron every Sufi is circumambulating themselves in Whirling Dervish and like that every muslims circumambulating The Kaba in Mecca and like that every planets is circumambulating the Sun and like that every thing in the Galaxy and in this Universe circumambulating The Black Hole and like that every thing in Multiverse and Dimensions is circumambulating the Reality of YaSeen and like that YaSeen and all the Divine Attributes is circumambulating The One God Almighty Allah. So in Islam it is no Problem to use Sun and Moon as a Symbol of Divine Reality.
And What you said about the idols of kaba is false and propaganda, There waw a total of 360 idols and represent the evil ego energy in the 360 points of the body, and Prophet Muhammad (Sa.) destroyed them all, there was no moon idols.
You are in the falsehood, in a Political Unspiritual Blind Religion manipulated by the Reptalian Alien(Jinn) with the help of Jews and Secret Socity.

Muslims per se aren't time conscious when it comes to their rebuttals. This is where your historical and chronicling acumen bails us out eg the shahada transformation, early muslims appear flexible than today's hardliners.Further we learn that first was Qathem then later christened Mohamed= "the praised one" = god!
"Corruption of Bible" claim came much later. You know what am asking doc.
Would do if you can compile those dates covering the transformation till now,pdf can do just in case. This comes often as a shock to muslim debaters with long held view that all begun at their prophet's life time.
