- Part 3 of the ESP LTD Alexi project features the full clear coat process, assembly and a standalone sound demo. I am super happy with how good this project turned out. Now onto the next one!
Easily one of the nicest crackle paint jobs I've ever seen. And I think it was a blessing in disguise that you were running shy on the crackle paint and did the back and sides black.

Do you get the same end result hardness (2k vs 1k) after the proper cure times? Can you put 2k over 1k? Can you put gloss over matte clear?
I have a can of 1k gloss and matt each. Over crackle. Thinking to use up the matte then then gloss then 2k gloss (if necessary). Seems the gloss would override the matte.

Hello. Do you find it absolutely necessary to get really fussy and sand perfectly smooth after spraying your first can of clear? If there is a tiny bit of orange peel left after sanding with my 800 grit, will my second full can of clear cover it up? I'm afraid of burning through to the paint. Thank you
With the crackle i ended up using around 5 cans or so of clear with sanding in between each coat i didn’t get really fussy and go through all the grits of sandpaper until the final sanding before buffing i wouldn’t say its absolutely necessary to get it perfectly smooth sanding between coats do the best you can using ur judgement on how much material your taking off so u don’t burn through like u said. A little tip for u stay away from sharp edges corners or points while sanding in between coats those spots are always more prone to burn through cause the clear will be thinner in those areas. Wait till all your clears on and cured then you can worry about those spots carefully. Hope this helps !
@@SIX1NINEGUITARSANDGEAR I have it sanded down to a pretty smooth even haze in most areas with just a hint of orange peel left in some areas by the edges and on the bevels. Like you said, after my last full can of clear, i'll fully level sand and then polish. Thanks for the info, Much appreciated!!

That came out awesome man, so cool !!! One question , after you did the crackle and let it dry for a few days did you do any type of sanding before the clear coat or just cleaned off and cleared then sanded after clear? thanks and again great job!!!
I just lightly scuffed it with a finer grey scotch-brite pad when your using a single stage paint ( most enamel spray paint) you wanna let it dry and cure fully before u clear with a urethane based clear like 2k clear.

Did you completely sand the guitar before you applied the clear coat? If so, with which sandpaper?
Or did you put clear varnish on it straight after the last color and just sand the clear varnish again and again? thx and great job! i watch this video 10 times!
After i applied the crackle finish i coukd have let that set a little and applied the first coats of clear right after that but i ended having to wait for the 2k clear to be delivered. There was a few days in between the crackle and the first few coats of clear usually rule of thumb is to clear within an hour of your last color coat or after 24 hours ( some paints say 48 hours) . I went thru i think 6 cans of 2k clear on this project between the headstock and body because the crackle made the surface uneven so i would put a few coats of clear let it dry then wet sand it with p600 grit then couple more coats of clear and repeat till the surface was perfectly level . But before i put any clear on i might have lighty rub it down with a grey scotch brite pad. I would have prefered to clear within an hour of putting the crackle paint on but like i mentioned i had to wait on the clear to come. Theres been absolutely zero issues with the finish on this guitar to this day. Thanks for the comment feel free to ask if you have anymore questions. Im glad to help.
Whats the key to get those big crackles? I tryed it on a Guitar pedal and the crackle only came out small. It looks cool for a pedal but not for a guitar… thx
@@paul10frank i let the lime green dry for 2 hours and went heavy when i sprayed the crackle on. The heavier you spray it on the bigger the crackle the lighter you spray it the smaller.
Do you think you couldve done all the clear coats in one day if youd have anticipated the ridges? Or would you suggest doing a can, waiting a day, sanding and doing more clear?
I think you would go through alot more clear coat doing it that way sanding inbetween coats i think was the best solution in my opinion but like with everything theres a 100 diff ways to do the same thing and get a good result all about what you were taught and prefer.
@@SIX1NINEGUITARSANDGEAR do you think this stuff would work applying 3 coats then scuffing with 800 and then applying more before final wet sanding through all the grits? Or do you think that haziness you get from scuffing with 800 will cause issues with the final clearing?
@@joepangrace1983 i think you could try that route i dont see anything wrong eith ghat being i had such a big crackle pattern it toik alot of wet sanding and coats to level it out.

One more question if you have a moment. Data sheets on the 2k clear says 24 hrs dry time. Do think this stuff is safe to lightly sand and apply more coats after 24 hrs?
Hey -Question about the 2k. After 24 hours i followed this cutting schedule:800, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500, compound and buffed. Guitar was glassy smooth and glossy like a factory finish. Looked like yours. However up close i could still see all the scratches from the sanding. Did i cut/buff too soon? Didnt keep paper clean enough? What do you think I did wrong? Or what would you recommend?
Are they swirls from the buffing pad or does it looks like scratches from sand paper ? You gotta make sure you constantly clean the paper and do each step theroughly what compound and buffing bads are you using

@@joepangrace1983 i feel like i spent most of my time in the 800 range 800-1000 i feel im my experience gets most of the scractches out after that ur basically starting like polishing buffing process with the 1000-1500-2000

@@DrMurdercock theres a bunch of diff ways to get all doff style crackle mines the more striaght line crackle but i also like the splintered crackle looks to i think u get that with letting the base coat dry longer but i haven’t experimented with that yet
@@SIX1NINEGUITARSANDGEAR I've not experimented at all with crackle yet. I remember using it YEARS ago for something but don't remember what lol. I love the Brandon Ellis crackle jobs, Jackson has the crackle down to an art. SOMEONE knows their method online, just gotta find him lol

Great job, did you sand before the clear coat or just let paint cure then clear?
From the two previous videos & what he said here, it looks like he did the latter because the black on green was uneven. Looks good because he's taking his time and thinking before doing the job. If lived near me, I'd sent him my ALX-200 for a similar paint job. Looks freaking awesome.

Because i let it sit and cure so long i did lightly use a scotchbrite pad on it before i put down the clear coat only because your normally suppose to lay the clear down relatively quick after the base coats are done and some time had passed before doing the clear
@@SIX1NINEGUITARSANDGEAR , Thanks I have a Warlock I want to do a crackle on! watched a few videos some did clear right away but others say to let base cure for a week or so first but didn't mention sanding before clear lol I dont want to damage the crackle before clear
Could you spray sanding sealer first to level it out and then hit it with clear?

Yea well its what i had at the time its not staying that way the project was already way past the deadline with my work schedule
Theres a differance between half a$$ed and not caring and using whats available at the time already going over budget with the massive amounts of clear i had to buy there wasn’t anything left but actually have everything on order from my local shop should be correct by next week
