- Illmatic is the debut album of American rapper Nas, released April 19, 1994 on Columbia Records. Following his signing to Columbia with the help of MC Serch, recording sessions for the album took place during 1992 to 1993 at Chung King Studios, D&D Recording, Battery Studios, and Unique Recording Studios in New York City. Its production was handled by Nas, Large Professor, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, L.E.S., and DJ Premier. Stylistically a hardcore hip hop album, Illmatic features Nas's multi-syllabic internal rhyme patterns expressing inner city lyrical themes and narratives based on his native Queensbridge, New York.
Upon its release, the album debuted at number 12 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, selling 59,000 copies in its first week. However, its initial sales fell below expectations and its five singles failed to achieve significant chart success. While it experienced initial low sales, Illmatic received generally positive reviews from most music critics upon its release and earned praise for its production and Nas's lyricism. On January 17, 1996, the album was certified gold in sales by the Recording Industry Association of America, and in 2001, it earned platinum certification after sales of one million copies in the United States.
Since its initial reception, the album has been recognized by writers and music critics as a landmark album in East Coast hip hop. It contributed to the regional scene's artistic renaissance in New York, while marking an influential, stylistic change in hip hop at the time. Its influence on subsequent hip hop artists has been attributed to the album's production and Nas's rapping. Several writers have cited Illmatic as one of the quintessential hip hop recordings and one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time. In 2003, the album was ranked number 400 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
Little did they know that 20 years later people from all over the world would watch this short teaser about what was gonna be a classic, timeless album. Dope
since 2011 has the same 12 month period as 1994, i really hope nas do an "illmatic 2" with the same producers again, just to bring that 1994-2011 type vibe back, from the old to the new. it's time man.
To me nas is the greatest. Tupac was great, but nas was the smartest and most talented rapper in his time. You gotta be highly intelligent to connect to nas and comprehend what he said.
0:54-0:57 look at all those legends in the studio at the same time.
that little kid talking about cats getting stabbed, shot, arrested, beat up etc summed up the era.........ima just trying to do my own thing real talk.
if nas had a ghostwriter then it must of been God lmaoo
The dopest hip hop album of all time!
That doesn't matter amount of sales, time it took or the amount of songs on an album what counts its quality music. That's why illmatic is an incredible timeless masterpiece.
This is the press release for the album designed to create buzz not a documentary
Illmatic was notable for how insular it sounded. A true rappers rapper, Nas dazzled with intricate, densely layered rhyme schemes that demanded close inspection. His imagery was both fanciful and morbid. Nas was the first rapper to consciously explore, and exploit, the gap between perception and experience.
I’m 11 years late to this comment but I gotta salute you. Great breakdown G 🫡
Illmatic is beyond the genre of hip hop, belongs amongst the great albums of all times - Kind of Blue, A Love Supreme, Are you Experienced?, Bitches Brew, OK Computer, Led Zeppelin IV, everything by the Beatles, probably leaving out some great blues artists there like Albert King but I'm more of a jazz dude
nothing and i mean nothing will touch this album not reasonable doubt not 36 chambers not ready to die this is the best album of all-time
they should make a movie about his life
Its called Time Is Illmatic
@@DanTheMan189 that movie is only about his life up til Illmatic.
produced by the best... Large Professor simply outstanding. Respect from Chile
5000 years from now if civilization falls apart this is the one essential album to bring back what hip-hop was. this is the essence in the purest form. Im glad he had that beef with Jay-Z it brought back THIS nas.
I like all of them, but " One Love" is my favorite.
when nas dropped "illmatic" back in 1994, a whole new vibe had came into hip hop. a feel good musical vibe that help energized everyone's heart & soul. it's a shame today's hip hop doesn't give us the strength we need to carry on. today's rap crap gives us pain & stress. we don't need that in 2k11. we need that old vibe from back in the day, when hip hop was hip hop. "Illmatic" 4 life!!!
i was only 1 years old when it came out!
They know they were high when they were doing this documentary, Q-tip sounded as if he were blazed when he was talking about "one love".
I love every rhyme, lyric, verse and song illmatic but there's one story that hit me the hardest and made me visualize a motion picture. The story about shorty duwoop in the third verse of one love is probably the illest verses of all time. You could see every detail from everything he said. Salute to Nas realistic lyricism cuz im pretty sure that was shorty duwoop talking n sitting on the bench with Nas and Jungle.
They put that scene in belly
I feel sorry for people who never heard this album.... musical masterpiece
22 years ago. Classic album
illmatic is a class of his own nothing can compare today's hip hop music and club rappers(whatever they spitting today) it's a million miles away ahead of it's time. CLASSIC SHIT!!
finally someone who can actually explain why they prefer it, yeah i understand what your saying, but im a sucker for flow. whatever tickles your fancy. either way im not say that by liking one im hating the other, cause i love both. thats all that really matters i suopose.
G.O.A.T period. No more. Nuff' said
let's hope he comes back to the ILLMATIC standards
Best Hip Hop Album EVER, PERIOD.
@Amaan305 The lyrics were actually my first album had no famous guest appearances so Nas was right when he said that.
And such a simple album with a complex background and lyrics became one of the best (if not the best) hip-hop albums ever produced.
"It ain't hard to tell, you know we did that a long time ago & everybody was sleepin"
I don't think anybody could have forseen a future where the track gets leaked before it even leaves the mixer.
Best album
That part of what is missing in Hip Hop today man the Rapport between MC and Producer I wish They could all Vibe out in the studio like Back in the 90s which seem to have bold well for the Music in the Golden Era of the 90s hate that MCs just send their verse to one rappers or a beat to one Producer it just kills the vibe for creating great music like on illmatic (Hopefully Joey Bada$$ does this with his Debut Album B4.DA.$$)
Nothing fucking with the 90s
The greatest rap album of all time (and top 10 albums of all time). It still sounds fresh every time I listen to it.
the greatest rap album of all time. Period.
1 year later, the greatest Spanish-talking ever, Kase.O, alzo did his first song (only 15 yrs old) yall should check it out even if it's only for his flow and killer beats
This dude nas hasnt aged a day
THE WORLD IS YOURS
I only wrote an offensive comment because you did btw. TROLLING is the art of deliberately, cleverly, and secretly pissing people off, usually via the internet, using dialogue. Using TROLL in a comment would mean that one is defined by this action of TROLLING. To be defined as a troll one must be trolling several times, or at least seem like they have. This of course isnt always how it is, as one can be labeled a troll the first time they are trolling. To say that you were a troll is STUPID
@DnnQns im with you! but the reality is that's not gonna happen. i'm just gonna dream like everybody else.... and like you too.
This nigga at 4:30 is a G
well average relative to his lyrics and bigs flow, is it not? Even then an opinion is merely subjective, and to me his flow is good, but not amazing when compared to the legends of his class, yes its amazing compared to the average rapper, but were arent talking about an average rapper.
True lyrically, but Pac had probably the greatest passion of all mcs, nobody could galvanize like Pac, Nas was one of the truest hip hop artists of all time but Pacs passion transcended his skill, its too bad they couldnt do some real tracks together.
it couldnt be either/or thats a stupid comment, they are a swimmer when they are swimming, thats that, theres no ifs, nor any but, stop fabricating rules of english, and refrain from using offensive comments, but instead try to improve your arguement
and thats exactly why pac cant fuckin touch nas. his music is fuckin poetry not some bullshit that you spit once and pass it off because you can. pac isnt even in the same sentence as nas when you talk content and longevity.
@basicblunthead
actually nas said he lost the original lyrics to "life's a bitch" on the subway.
& "life's a bitch" was suppose to originally sample Mtume's 1982 song "Juicy Fruit" but Biggie took the idea.
"Life's a dice game" sounds like some shit he made just fooling around in the studio...not like a actual track.
Ready to die is much better!! Im not saying this is shit, cause it isnt its insane, but yyeah. Plus how can you say a is better then b simply because the rapper is alive? Fuck Logic.
@flamezide Yeah they was all baked. It's a shame that the majority of new rap that comes out can't even come close to this, that's why I stay listening to old school
wow, checkout shorty there talkin about "everybody get shot at and beat up,im just tryin to do my own thing". the kid is 12 at most.
