- Hi all,

Here's my written guide: thecarpentersdaughter.co.uk/woodworking/changing-a-door-mortice-sash-lock/
Your video is a joy to watch as your approach and solutions are exactly the ones I'd use. Simplified and very easy for a total layman like me to understand.
You rock! Thanks for your video and after watching this I changed my own mortice lock on my shed. I even bought it from tool station as you mentioned. Now it works brilliantly and I saved calling someone to come sort it.
Thank you so much Vikkie. This has been so helpful, very clear advice. You have shown all I need to replace my lock....which broke today. 👏👏
I've never enjoyed having to change locks or handles on doors. You make it look easy, nice work!
Thanks Mike :) Often I've worried about little jobs like this, but then found it's rather easy. It was just a matter of finding the right lock!
I'd reinforce the keeper side of the door with flat bar steel plate. Looks great 😃👍
Another great video full of tips. After watching I fixed my bedroom door handle lol which was falling off so great job it got me motivated:-)
SCORE!!!! 🤣 I think I'd do the same after realising it wasn't as hard as it looked lol.
Colin almost in shot then...Great video, very well described. Such an easy job when you know how, so thank you for how!!! I also loved the dancing... Steve
Good job vikkie those little dances at the end make me giggle thanks for sharing
Thanks Warren 😀 I'm looking forward to next Sunday's song 😄
Woman after my own heart. Thanks.
Off to Wickes to get my new lock.
Fyi... have a look for a reversible one! You won't need to unscrew the catch like I did here :) You can see it in my bike shed video 👌
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK I've got a bigger problem: the lock is bigger than the space on the door. I'd have to strip the beading out which protects the glass panes 😒. I think a new door is needed. Sigh. Would look nice, and necessary but not sure I can fit a door. Haha.
In the past I have found that a solo bee has built her hive inside an out building sash lock. It was jammed packed with wax honey and nectar. Getting those two screws back in is a real pain in the butt, I now carry a small tap and wrench in my toolbox because they will cross thread if you even look at them wrong.
Sometimes/often sash locks are screwed together which makes them very easy to disassemble, grease and then reassemble. Saves buying a new lock and adjusting the opening in the door.
Summers on its way, have you ever seen a pallet pool/hot tub?
Pesky little screws! Lol. I haven't seen one in person, but it sounds perfect! I always wanted a hot tub on the decking 🤩
Hahaha! That reminds me of the home made quick paddling pool Dad made for us one Summer. It was the best and all the kids on the street came round too! Will have to dig out the photo of when we were nippers - and any others I can find that have a DIY life feel :D
Well done.
Little tip if you need to fit new lock. Put some lipstick on the lock part that goes into the door frame when door locks an close the door and you get a imprint of where to drill into the frame.
scott mclean good tip but could you imagine the reaction I'd get on a building site if I got out a lipstick 😂 I use a little bit of glue or sometimes just scribble on it with pencil 👍🏼
Spend Time, Save Money, DIY lol id jus do it for a laugh
Hahaha to lipstick on a building site LOL. Must admit, I've used nail varnish once for something similar.
The Carpenter's Daughter Hahaha what do you guys have in your toolboxes 😂 do you use tweezers to pull out nails 😂 You should do a questionnaire to see who has used the most unimaginable item to do diy bet you get some whoppers!
Many thanks for that. Just what I needed as a reminder.
Still a novelty for an old bloke like me to see you tackling these jobs. Good effort!
You might consider taking the lock out first and then measuring it up accurately and/or taking it to the lock supplier to check dimensions! You could also consider a molybdenum grease for lubrication....but hey, you've got to do the videos!! :)

Nice video Vikkie, I agree with some of the other commenters that if you are going or are storing anything of any value the. You need to put a stronger and better lock on there. Good luck with the choice on your picture (I picked out my fav and put my two sense worth in) I really loved all the ones of you and you baby (I’m sorry my mind slips on what his/her name is). Always enjoy your channel as your videos are direct and you always take the harder road at times just to ensure that your doing the job correctly. Good job!
Thanks so much for your honesty 😀 yes, I think I'll be changing it too to be safe.
Lovely work. Nice finish , look's great.
Thanks 😀
The Carpenter's Daughter your so welcome nice lady. All ways looking forward to your videos 😀
Nice work Vikkie! Now the doors just need a coat of stain to spruce things up a bit. :D
I'll be trying to fit a yale lock to my back gate this has given me some tips 👍
Glad to hear it
😀
Oh Ouch !!! Poor Girl's hands !! Yay !! It is works !!!!
Lol, nah it red cedar stain 😄 instagram.com/p/BgyaBdzh8m9/
The rod between the handles is called a spindle. In Canada anyway lol
Thanks :) I bet it's called that here, too - that'd make sense :D
good work Vikkie. if it will become your workshop you might need to consider a more premium lock... tools add up quickly...
Thank you, I think I will :)
Lovely job once again 👏👏👏 little tip. Hit your chisel with the side of hammer then you don't slip or miss and hit your hand. Just in case you ever need to 😊 oh and you definitely need to be in a band or just do a music video haha well done 😏👌👌
As always great video 👍🏼
Thanks and thanks for the lock tip :)
The Carpenter's Daughter if you get more confidence to use your chisels the jobs will get easier. But I always tell our students to use "sharp" chisels, blunt ones are just glorified screwdrivers 😂 and can be more dangerous. I was planning to do a sharpening video soon and if you did one it might help your viewers???
Good 0:00/5:23
When did you go back for your keys?
It’s funny to me because my dad found my keys in the door one morning when I’d gotten home from work at 3am.
It’s nice to know I’m not the only one...😉
Hahaha. I hadn't the foggiest what you were on about until I watched the end LOL. Poor presenting my end lol
You present your videos wonderfully! I’m a big fan!
I love that you don’t pretend to be perfect.
Keep dancing and singing!
You have a lovely Dog!😍
Thank you :D He's the reason I struggle to get my work done lol... he's too cute 😄
there is no need to take both handles off just one side will do. mortice locks in the UK are 2 1/2 inch or 3 inch hope this helps others ATB Kev
Thanks so much :)
I may be wrong but I think that bar going through the door is called a spindle.
Thanks 😀
Yay! Thou shalt do the dance! 😁
😜🤣
and Hans was very impressed.
Any excuse for some fuss and attention lol
The Carpenter's Daughter you or .. ? :P
My lock looks exaclty like that one...but I can't remove the handles...seems like they are welded together....what can I do?
yay for that feeling when the new lock locks with a clunk.. and some cheesy 90's euro-pop ( don't know how to class the dance however haha )
hahaha, I might start calling #crapdance LOL
Or #acedance (a crap effort dance)
Great work 👍 Your a lady of many skills , great to see a pretty lady doing DIY
haha, cheers :)
Well done , blimey Vikki you scraped your knuckles up a bit how you do that bet the air was blue ! 😉x
😄 Nah, it was red cedar wood stain. I'd been doing to back fence earlier that day 🤣
The Carpenter's Daughter ahh that's ok then, least I've shown my caring side 😂keep up the good work how's the oven alright ?
:D The oven is great! It took a while to stop thinking the shelf may collapse any minute like the old one. This one's also got a handy auto shut off when the timer's up. The only thing I'm not keen on is the temperature dial as it jumps from 150 to 200 if I ever need to bake on a precise heat - but I don't bake that much these days 😀
Sweet on sweat pea.
Thanks 😁
CD you ought to hire your services out for money, me thinks you would do pretty well - another thumbs up vid :)
The thought of whether they'd be happy or not with my work puts me on edge too much 😂
You done perfect work:)
Thanks so much ;)
That must be an annoying nuckel injury , don't you feel that the injured part becomes the most one that is used or the most bumped :-)) nice demo.
Good job 😀 but get ratchet screw driver set make life easier
How long did it take?
Clever girl. Great video Vikkie.
Thanks so much Keith :)
just a question. should the plate with the visible screw heads be on the inside of the door? maybe for extra security. just curious about that as I always put the visible screw heads on the inside of the door.
I don't think it really matters in this instance because the locking mechanism is a deadbolt and is buried in the door. Removing the handle and outer plate would not put you much closer to gaining access to the lock.
Of course, a solid boot to the latch would snap it like a twig, but as my grandpa always said, "A lock is just there to keep an honest man honest."
that makes sense. thanks.
👍
Cheers 😀
The Carpenter's Daughter I didn't have anything to say just left a comment for your channel engagement.
I really appreciate it 😀
You are very pretty 🙂, nice video
Nice job, just needs a coat of paint now lol
😁 already done 😉 I have a video on it very soon 😃
You left the keys in the lock :)
LOL, I hadn't even noticed. I did grab them as soon as I went back for the camera haha
Super so nice smart girl
Joo
LOndon thanks
Ive got the key ,ive got the secret 🤣🤣🤣🤣
It's not my kind of music, but thought it fit perfectly lol
The Carpenter's Daughter it really did lol .i loved that song in my youth such a happy song
Time to put some oil on the doors too
That's for a video in a couple of weeks ;)
👏👍
Thanks again :D
Damn your doors need several coats of wood polish, they're all dried up
:D That was the next job I went on to do :D You'll see them a totally different colour in my next video 😆
What on earth did you do to your hands?
Red cedar wood stain LOL- I painted the back of the fence just before replacing this lock 😄
That's what you get for listening to Presidents of the United States! LOL
I wish they brought our more music LOL.. I listen to the same of theirs over and over again while I work 😄
Do you let Mr. Vikkie do projects around the house or is he stand here and hold this type of guy?😳
Nah, I prefer to do them while he's at work. He's less likely to take the mickey while I try to work things out 😂 (my pace is much slower than his lol)
The Carpenter's Daughter, so, you relish the research, planing and execution. Enjoy every minute.
I hate to admit, but it helps being taken out of my comfort zone. I don't like the learning process as such - it's the understanding and knowing how to do something that I live for, which all must come hand in hand.
