      @cryptodad very thorough and on point as usual. There's one part missing to this (and other restore wallet videos) and that is showing how to make sure your wallet browser extension is connected. It's assumed, but I'd like to see in these videos you go to your Phantom wallet and open it and demonstrate it's connected to the recovered Ledger. I don't really use Ledger Live...almost exclusively via browser extension. TY

    Hi Crypto Dad, Great video! My Ledger Nano S is getting old and the screen is getting dim. If I restore to a new Ledger Nano S, will my crypro still show up on my old dim device or does the restore process automatically wipe that out? Another way of asking the same question is: If my device was stolen and I quickly restored to a new device, would the person who stole my device still be able to access my crypto on the stolen device?

    My 5 year old original Nano S had a screen malfunction. Tech from Ledger spent some time on the phone with me- Even had me plug it into a wall charger to get the screen to wake up.. No luck had to get a new device. The instructions worked perfectly for my new Nano S Plus.

      This was a very informative video. thank you so much. I do have a question though. I’m wondering what your thoughts are about leaving your crypto to your heirs and how would you explain to them how to recover it? Let’s say I tell my heirs or someone I trust that my recovery words are in a safety deposit box that they have access to once I’m gone, but how would they ever figure out all these detailed steps to access the crypto itself? Have you left instructions for someone or how would that work? Wouldn’t they need my password to ledger live as well?

    As always, a pleasure to watch and learn. One question that was not talked about is the "Export" account option under settings>accounts in Ledger Live. This may have been explained in another video that you have made but for here, is it possible to have saved a copy of all your accounts using the export function, than bring them back in for the reset operation? Just wondering, as it would make it so much easier to do that, but I have never tried . Thanks again, gb.

    • @CryptoDad
      @CryptoDad  2 месяца назад

      The export account function in the desktop version of ledger live is to allow you to import your accounts into the phone based version of ledger live. If you want a backup of your accounts that you have created, then you can simply go into your Appdata folder in windows. Inside the roaming folder is a folder called ledger live. This is where is Ledger Live stores all of its preferences You could back that folder up to a flash drive if you want to. However, it doesn't give you any access to crypto. The cleanest way to recover your accounts is by using the device to connect and use the add account method. If you're worried about forgetting cryptos, perhaps you could just list the cryptos that you own in an Excel file. You could also take a screenshot of your ledger live accounts for future reference when you're installing on a new machine.

    Thank you for the step-by-step instructions. I have a strange scenario. I bought some XRP and XLM and sent it to my Nano X using my cell phone, which now I no longer have. I have a new cell phone, so now I need to wipe clean my Nano X and "restore" my 24 phrases and then it will allow me to pair my device to the new phone. My question is, what if my Nano X was lost in a house fire but I still had my 24 phrases. How could I get my crypto back with just the words?

And that node hadn't been updated for a while and a person did not want to wait for that node to update, could a person enter the 12 word seed phrase into ledger and recreate the node wallet? Thanks for any thoughts.

      Many people, including me, believe that having more than one device and spreading your assets is best practice. But you need to choose the strategy that's right for you if you start spreading your assets across too many devices, you might get confused as to where things are. So give it a good balance between keeping it simple, and using multiple devices.

    great video as always, but i have question about restoring a nano s to sPlus but using the same ledger live that i use for nano x storage also? Is there any problem with using the ledger live with nano X and also add nano SPlus restored wallet?

    • @CryptoDad
      @CryptoDad  6 месяцев назад

      No, it’ll be seamless. Once you restore the Ledger nano S plus, Ledger Live will treat it as the same device, because mathematically, as far as Ledger Live is concerned, it is the same device. It uses the same master private key once you restore from the 24 word recovery phrase. After you’re done doing the restore, you can do a quick check by plugging in the Ledger nano S plus and going to any of your existing accounts and doing a receive with a hardware check you should be able to see the receiving address on your computer screen and on your device to confirm that the device has been successfully restored.

    Great video. I misplaced both the PIN for my NanoS device and the PASSWORD to Ledger Live but I have the seed phrase. So if I enter 3 wrong pins then restore device using seed phrase. Then delete the Ledger Live APP from my laptop then download again and reset up wallets as per your video. I should be good. I assume you then can reset the PASSWORD from the new install? Is this correct? Many thanks!

    I’ve read conflicting info regarding problems with apple Mac desk tops and Mac books when it comes to firmware updates etc and general functioning of ledger!
    I’m new to all this and would appreciate your views and advice with apple Mac laptops/ desktop when operating ledger live and device?
    Great channel!

    • @CryptoDad
      @CryptoDad  Год назад +2

      Well if you have the "latest" Mac book you should be OK. The problem occurs when you try the run the "latest" version of Ledger Live on older Macs. Macs have always had this issue. Newer software require updates to mac OS which may or may not be supported by the older hardware. Realistically, You should plan on getting a new mac every 5 to 7 years to keep up with the latest software/firmware/hardware

    I uninstalled and reinstalled Ledger Live, restored my Ledger devices ( 6 total ) just by entering my respective pin #'s, looking at the apps on the device and adding them. Some of the crypto on several devices
    are missing. I stupidly did not have a record of which crypto I had on which device, and I may also have uninstalled some apps to make room for additional apps. I do have a list of all the various crypto I have on all 6 devices, just don't know which crypto is on which device. Should I reinstall all my devices and go through installing the crypto apps from my
    list one by one ? or is there some other way ?

Thank you in advance for any assistance you may provide ! Harry .

    • @CryptoDad
      @CryptoDad  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, the accounts that you have in Ledger live are based on your original seed phrase. It's fine if you want to reset your device with a new seed phrase. But you'll need to create brand new accounts in ledger live for that. And of course, you're going to need to get the crypto out of the older (original) accounts. So I would suggest that you restore your device using your original seed phrase, so that you will have access to your current accounts in ledger live. From there you could move your crypto somewhere safe like an exchange or a different wallet. And then you would be free to reset your device if you wanted to. But you should also reinstall Ledger live clean so you can start fresh. After that, you can move your crypto back in.

      As far as I understand our crypto is secured by the recovery phrase ... Ledger Live just shows us what we hold. Like a bank statement. The crypto is out there in cryotoland/space/blockchain and not on LL, the apps or the device. The Ledger device is the mini computer which came up with our unique recovery phrase. This is really the key to our crypto. And here's where my brain starts giving up ... I think private keys within are the result of us typing in our recovery phrase. Like dialling in numbers on a big metal safe. Once the recovery phrase is input we can access the crypto on chain via LL. I guess this makes the pin number additional security to the device itself. Hope this helps. I'm still trying to get my head around L and LL. Thanks to superhero CryptoDad n Ledger's Dan ...

      Hey, you really can't combine seed phrases like that onto one device. What you could do though is restore from one seed phrase. And then simply transfer everything from the other wallet. For example, if you have two ledger nano Ss with a seed phrases, get a ledger nano X, restore it using the seed phrase from the first Ledger Nano S and then simply transfer everything else from your 2nd Ledger Nano S into your new Ledger Nano X. In that way you can combine the crypto together.

I enter my pin and it says Bitcoin Ready but Ledger Live is still waiting for me to connect it. I am using the original cable. I checked Device Manager on my PC but it doesn't have the Nano listed. It does however say Unknown USB Device. I cannot afford another Nano without accessing my crypto.
    What can I do??

      Sounds like you just reset the device rather than doing a proper restore. Did you actually re-enter your 24 words into the device? Or did you just reset the device and then write down a new set of words? Here's a video on doing a proper restore:
      Easily Restore Your Ledger Nano S/X: Wallet Recovery 24-word Backup & Ledger Live Guide: ruclips.net/video/Hh06E77eysA/видео.html
      Also did you use the correct seed phrase? Do you have more than one seed phrase laying around your house? A lot of people will reset their device and create a new seed phrase and not realize they need the original seed phrase. Check drawers and closets for other seed phrases.
      I'm also curious why your ledger live is empty. If you reset your device, then you shouldn't have had to have touch your ledger live. Did you reset both? Also, in your ledger live, are they simply empty accounts? Or is it a zero balance with outgoing transfers? Did you reveal your seed phrase to any one during this process that was claiming to be helping you?
      You also posted this same question in a Trezor video. Are you restoring on a ledger or a Trezor?
      What assets are we talking about here? Bitcoin? Ethereum? Solana? Are you seeing some assets and not and not others? or is nothing showing up?
      And how are you seeing your assets on the blockchain? Might I ask?

    Question 1: If someone PHYSICALLY gets ahold of your ledger there's NO way they would be able to access your cryptos without the pin?
    Question 2: Do these ledgers come with the recovery phrase already pre installed on them, or does the ledger just generate a brand new recovery phrase when you first set it up?
    Question 3: Is there anyway to CHANGE the 24 words recovery phrase later?
    If so how exactly?
    Thanks

    • @CryptoDad
      @CryptoDad  Год назад +1

      1. Correct. Although there are some advanced methods employed by experts using specialized equipment that have been successful at decoding the pin. This is a very specialized and unlikely scenario. normally someone who might stumble on your device won't be able to access it. Lesson: keep your device hidden. Don't allow anyone physical access to your device.
      2. No, the recovery phrase is generated randomly when you initialize the device. If there is already a seed phrase on your device when you buy it, don't use it.
      3. No, you cannot CHANGE your seed phrase. You can reset (enter pin incorrectly three times) your device and generate a new seed phrase, but you would need to transfer your crypto out of the old configuration first. i.e. move it somewhere like an exchange and then transfer it back into the new configuration.

      There are other wallets that support 24 word seed phrases. One of them is Trust wallet, which you can download on your phone. From there, you can restore using your 24 word seed phrase. However, this is not a great idea and should only be used in an emergency. What you really should do is get a replacement device. It's never a good idea to import a hardware wallet's 24 word seed phrase into a hot wallet.

    Checked Ledger Live and NOW it displays a "Reset Ledger Live" obviously I do NOT want to do this as it will erase my Portfolio.
    Ledger support is NON existent, really regretting buying this Nano devise. I have a lot of crypto, and because the Nano upgrade has a bug now I cannot access my crypto assets which are worth a substantial amount.
    Ledger support refuse to communicate, their emails block any replies and their online chat sessions keep being cancelled AND they do NOT answer all the questions.

      Yes, in this case you will need to recreate your accounts from scratch. However, your ledger will never forget. The wallets will always be there, you just have to manage them. Of course, in many cases where you lose the device, the ledger live will still be intact, so no need to restore accounts. They will already be there in Ledger Live.

    Just a suggestion. Light hearted of course. I keep hearing this phrase “in real life” when it comes to comparing using, and I hate the term, “crypto”, for everyday use. I’ve been living on Bitcoin for over a year now. Using different services to get paid in Bitcoin. Bitcoin is real life. Dare I say, the only “crypto” that has real world adoption. Now, having said that, I know there are more people stuck in the fiat matrix than not. However, for some of us, using Bitcoin to pay my electric bill or buy groceries is just as normal as someone using a hundred dollar bill. (Or whatever denomination.) Just a random thought. Hope this finds everyone well.

    In a pickle. I got a Ledger for myself and one for my son. I dont know which recovery phrase goes with which device. Eye roll. To further complicate matters, in a boomer headless chicken moment, I reset one ledger and have another recovery phrase .... So I now have 2 ledgers and 3 recovery phrases....oh for goodness sake! Would it be a good idea to type the recovery phrases into each device and hopefully find which one/s pair up with the device. Could one Ledger Nano X have two sets of recovery phrases and two accounts? This Ledger business sure is exercising my brain which appears to be incredibly rusty.

    • @CryptoDad
      @CryptoDad  4 месяца назад

      There is an App that you can download from ledger live in the "my ledger" section called "recovery check". This will ask you to enter a 24 word seed phrase into the device and then it will tell you whether it matches the one on the device. That would be a good tool to use rather than doing a full reset and recovery. Once you have determined which devices match which seed phrases, you can perhaps label your devices. Use some sticky tape based on color or just right a name for each device so you can keep them straight like "device A" or "device B".
