    This video is a great way to begin my day because it brings back memories of my childhood. My maternal grandmother was from Germany & both she & my mother would make Rouladen very much like this recipe using bacon instead of smoked ham. I still make it myself & my Scottish wife loves it. You are one fine & versatile chef! Thanks for sharing your recipe with all of us!

      Your grandmother got it just right. Bacon strips or cubes add even more flavor and the bacon ensures that the beef does not become too dry. Best regards from Germany.

      You're so right. This dish needs red cabbage and some potatoes. Mashed potatoes are great but i prefer Kartoffelknödel (potatoe dumplings) and a glass of good red wine.😉🙂

    Wonderfully done. I was born and raised in Germany. I'm an Army brat. My Oma made the best Rouladen, but she used raw bacon. Thank you for the elegant production of this video.

    This is my favorite German recipe, and I order it every time I see it on the menu. We lived in Germany for three years back in the 1990s, and I had a German friend who would kindly make this occasionally for me. Your videos are such a pleasure to watch, and it’s a special pleasure seeing your darling pooch. I hope the bone was good!

    My Oma made this for me as a child whenever I asked and it was divine. I learned from her and now I care for her in her final years, but I haven't made this for her yet! Thank you for the reminder to complete those circles of love and care

    You've been busy uploading some great recipes lately. This one is no exception. I'm going to try this over the weekend. Will serve it over a creamy potato mash with chopped leeks braised in white wine and butter mixed through it. Yum. Thanks for the recipe and - as always - top notch video.

    My mother was German, and she cooked this often while I was growing up. She told me that it wasn't made the same way in every region. Where she is from, they didn't use pickles, but either way is delicious, especially with potato dumplings. My God could my mom cook!

      Yes that's what we use in Bavaria too,bacon is totally fine to use instead of ham,it's very delicious 😊

    Finally a german recipe, hurray. I am born in Germany and my family makes this often at easter or at christmastime. There are different types of fillings. My alltime favourite filling always will be with dijon mustard, bacon stripes and Pickles. Together with red Cabbage and potatoes or "Kartoffelknoedel", a fantastic dish. It is lot of work to do, but the taste is wonderful. I often cook 6-8 of them at once and freeze it for later.

    Rouladen was a special meal for our family.....a Sunday meal , birthday meal or holiday meal. We still love them served with dumplings, red cabbage and a rich mushroom gravy. My parents and grandparents have passed away and I remain to keep the recipe and memory alive. Thankfully my children treasure the recipe too. Thank you for the beautiful memory.

    Beef Rouladen, that is my favorite food since 40 years and more. I was very curious to see the way you prepare them.
    It is really the way my mother made them, and later me. Only difference: I take a little slice of smoked pig belly instead of
    cooked ham.
    And the other difference to my "Rouladen": Yours look very much more attractiv because you have the pactience and the
    manual skills of a heart surgeon.
    I have salmon and homemade potatoe-salad tonight. Salad prepared yesterday, so it is a 5-minutes-job today.

    My beloved friend Getaudel from East Germany invited us to her lovely home where she prepared this beautiful, simple, yet delicious telegant dish. I rolled out my sleeves and she taught me how to prepare this incredible masterpiece!
    She prepared some exactly like this and some with
    bacon 🥓!
    It was magnificent then, and NOW!

    My dad was a Gourmet Chef and German. Our Sunday dinners were Steak Rolls and Potato Dumplings. This is close to the way he would make them except he would put ground beef in. He would braes them first and then into a pot with water and cook them till the water was almost gone. He would Deglaze the pot and make a grave for the dumplings. This followed by his Apple Kuchen for desert.

    We had beef rouladen in Silesia too, in Poland as we were growing up together with red or white cooked cabbage and potato dumplings. I still make this meal, now living in USA, and my husband and kids absolutely love eating them.

    I knew you were going to tell him to take it outside! LOL! I live in part of US where mostly Germans settled. There are many good recipes with sour cream and pork! We had great bakeries growing up too. I can't believe people like the chain donuts now. Theirs were to die for made from scratch. Can't compete.

    I tried your recipe tonight for dinner but twisted it up a bit. In the broth I added lots of chopped onions and egg noodles so it made its own thickening. Was it darn good. Great recipe I throughly enjoyed it with the dill pickles! I also added some sweet chopped red peppers

    In Czechia it is also called "Spanish bird", usually there would be as well a quarter of hard boiled egg inside and mostly some sort of soft salami instead of the ham. But definitely this variation looks great as well 😍

    Thank you. This brings back memories from childhood. But my Mom is mix. Born in Asia, but makes these either Christmas or New Year. Her stuffing's include Pickles, Sausage or Hotdog, Eggs or Carrots. But she calls them Beef Roulade.

    I come from East Poland and this was a very common dish served with dumplings and sauerkraut. Which is also very Polish.
    Moreover my Swedish friends also found it very Swedish dish.... so this must be very common in few other places then.

    My Mum used to make this all the time when I was a kid in the 80's.....Hated it until I was in my 20's - then I LOVED all the German dishes both my parents made. They were born Mum 1931, Dad 1930 in Germany. Once I grew up, and now I am 54 - ALL the food they made is now incredible. Sadly both are dead now. Dad 87, Mum 94 - lived in Sydney since 1962.

    Made this yesterday. Substituted strips of bacon for the ham since that's what I had in my fridge. Turned out pretty good although I'm sure the ham would have been even better since the bacon is a little chewy.

      Bacon is actually more traditional, but I also prefer ham.

      @@recipe30 I bought a thin steak.
      I topped it with thin ham slices and a lovely relish, then rolled it.
      I used the toothpick method to keep the roll in place.
      I used ale to braise it in.
      I have just prepared and eaten it with some potato gnocchis.
      It was not exactly as in your recipe but it was still very tasty.

      I’d like to know how you make the dill pickle pot roast. It’s the dill pickle that’s my favorite part of rouladen, I think.

      @@rneustel388 I ended up making the pot roast instead of Joel’s recipe because I was being lazy. Big mistake! I browned the roast in my slow cooker then poured a large jar of dill pickle with the liquid over the meat and cooked it for 6 hours. Not impressive. I suggest you follow Joel’s recipe.😊
