Business Insider also wrote an article showing that other Targets in NYC have higher shoplifting rates, yet they're not being closed.

You are right, of course, but WILL "holding them accountable" change anything?. The Laws have always relied on the Social Contract, when you and I were young, everyone UNDERSTOOD, even the thieves, that it is wrong to steal each others stuff. They FELT guilt, you could MAKE them feel accountable.
However, the culture itself has changed to the point that the music, TV, movies, Public Discourse, everything, is twisted. People commit SERIOUS crimes and immediately start talking nonsense . . . and not because THEY thought up the nonsense, they absorb it in all the "sub-culture" films and music and TV.
You CAN'T hold someone to account if their mental geography interprets everything you do as directed against them with prejudice. The sort of people who shoplift, do NOT consider the rest of society has the right to stop them anymore. You CAN'T hold them to account because they don't think they are doing wrong, because of the (sub) culture that permeates their lives.
It is made perfectly clear in the associated (sub) culture of "Graffiti", they have just declared their damaging public property, and other peoples property, is "Art". And will literally scream in your face that you are denying them their "right" to practice their "art" and actually feel aggrieved WITH YOU when you call the police, or clean their damage away from your home.
They can NOT be "held to account" because they have a different story dominating their heads.

I'm a former New Yorker now living in Albuquerque, and the Walmart here also closed one of their stores due to theft. The interesting thing is that Walmart store closing was in an area also considered under served. Theft causing closing of stores, particularly in major cities, has become a national problem. The short-term thinking of thieves are destroying neighborhoods.

I suggest looking further into it, any time a corporation tells you something, assume they're lying. They care about profits, period. So if their stores aren't doing well sales wise, are they going to admit that to the stockholders, the board members and the public at large? Of course not. Truth is, Target isn't doing well for a lot of reasons. I go into this target in Manhattan and the one in the Bronx regularly, and they are almost always empty. Why aren't malls dying being blamed on "theft"? Amazon is killing traditional brick and mortar stores and Target is looking for a scapegoat that exonerates them of any problems. Was Blockbuster also closing and going bankrupt because of theft? Or was there something deeper at play there? Think about it.

Retail theft has grown exponentially since the pandemic. Loss prevention officers cannot touch shoplifters and they know it. I’ve worked in retail for forty years and have never seen it this bad. If a company decides to close a store because of it good for them. Too bad for the people who will lose that store but there really is no choice. It’s horrendous.

I totally get what you say Cash. But Target isn’t leaving just for the hell of it. They’re not leaving to destroy the community it’s serving. It’s leaving because NY’s government allows shoplifters to commit crimes with no repercussions thus they have to leave. Instead of focusing so much on Target leaving, maybe focus more on the thieves and the government that’s allowing these crimes to go unpunished.

You mention Costco doesn't have as many problems with theft as target etc but you pretty much answered it earlier in the video. Costco has a gatekeeping tool aka Membership fees, and it's a store that primarily sells in bulk. They also just like Sam's does I would imagine have people that check that you have proper membership at the door and reciept checkers when you leave. I know it's like that where I come from. It's a shame that these thieves who don't give a damn about the consequences for the whole neighborhood, just making a tiny bit of money. This is your reward if they go unpunished and it's supported.

a few days ago i was having a conversation with someone who has the mindset that "if i see someone stealing, no i didn't" we were talking about essentials, baby food, diapers, toilet paper etc. She believed it didn't matter, that the company makes millions, so these $20 items don't matter. I tried explaining that it may not hurt the company as a whole, but it hurts the local stores and employees. If a store isn't making plan, they cut hours, they start cutting hours for the part timers first, so someone who works 20-30 hours a week could now only be working 10-20 which is money they likely need. They start getting rid of positions, they do what they can to bring in profit to keep the store running. All she took from that was "they're punishing employees for things out of their control" and it just makes me so sad knowing she was so desperately trying to justify and run around from the fact that theft is hurting the local employees. Target closing is a direct result of the "i didnt see anything" mindset.

They pull up in vans or Uhauls and the driver waits while they fill up with Nike products then drive away. Police get their picture and license plate. Courts refuse to prosecute. DA's, Judges, Mayors and crappy governors refuse to do anything. They only act like they care when a store gives up and closes. Police hands are tied by bureaucrats. So keep voting for democrats let those stores close. Order through USPS and FedEx and then let the porch pirates have your stuff. Also "those policies that landed criminals in jail and kept them in there weren't racist but smart", is flawed to stay the least.
Those policies take away fathers. They break up families. If you really want to fix the situation, then shorten the time those men spend in Prison. But make them do mandatory vocational training once they get out. Make them learn plumbing, or make them learn to be a electrician, or a carpenter.
Then Kids will have a mother, and a father. Then we'll see the earning power of those families increase. And instead of stealing from Target. Those kids are just gonna be spending money on Robux, or Loot crates like middle class kids do.
